    Thermador replacing Thermador

Having gotten 31 years out of our last Thermador cooktop, we turned to Thermador for a replacement when the cost of repairs justified getting a new and updated unit. The new model fit in easily to the space of the old unit. Unfortunately, the center grill option is not available, at least in California. The unit works perfectly, although the electric griddle that is where the gas grill used to be in the older unit takes considerably longer to heat. But the sealed burner pans and absence of a grill mean for easier cleanup. The burners have the unique ability to drop to very low heat suitable for melting butter or chocolate, or holding a sauce, by turning themselves on and off automatically to achieve the low temperature. The appearance is austere with very clean lines. The recessed lighting open the controls is a nice feature, although the light is darkly white, whereas the rest of the kitchen has a softer color. An option of using a less blue-white light would be nice.

Perfect gas cooktop! Griddle is electric which allows for perfectly even cooking.

Fantastic range top. Very well designed. The burners and griddle are very easy to clean. The "extra low" burner settings are really useful for low simmer things.

Solid cooktop, beautiful, but almost too powerful

This may be a silly reason to take a star off, but the burners simply get too hot. They're phenomenal for things requiring higher heat but for anything that requires low heat -- rice, eggs, soup, etc -- it's been pretty frustrating to use. Instead they have a couple burners with XLO (extra low) setting which turns the burner off and on. There's no way that's a recipe for longevity, but time will need to confirm that. I will need to buy a rice cooker now and have learned that, to cook a couple of eggs, you heat up the pan and then turn the burner off once you pour in the eggs. It's fantastic when making a steak or something requiring high heat. Maybe I should've realized based on BTUs, but just never expected them to be so unreasonably hot. Easy to burn stuff and it is melting off the handles of my pans, even on "low" heat. Also, they're pretty coy about the fact the griddle is electric and not gas. It isn't mentioned in the title and the salesperson (not at best buy) never mentioned this and so we were quite surprised (and furious) when we noticed this during installation. I am actually happy it is electric though since it's got way better temperature control. Overall it's a very good and beautiful cooktop, I just wish it wasn't so unnecessarily hot (for my cooking habits, at least).
