Gameplay itself looks and feels awesome. I'm a bit disappointed that cutscenes where not remade, as it was still a 4:3 pixelated video. So far the voices are pretty good, I'm switching between the Japanese and English. I just feel like it needs touching up, like menu words should be spelt out, but overall a great remaster.

A classic jrpg that you can play on a modern system. Fun and tough jrpg with a Pokémon like style but with mature demonic themes. It could of been a better port the music is compressed the dlc is a rip off but the new voice acting and
upscaled graphics is a plus and some gameplay improvements. Good buy for 39.99 not so much for 49.99

A Great Game Held Back By A Poor Remaster

Long loading screens, bad ost compression and glitches plauge this release. Washed out shadows, and you have to pay for the dlc. Some animations drop the framerate to single digits. The PS4 release isn't much better but it does have better loading screens and better framerate.
The story is one of the best in the SMT franchise, if you haven't played the game, then even with the issues I listed above, you should play this game, SMT is a turn based demon collecting game that is hard as nails. It breaks conventional tropes in the sense that you are always sacrificing your demons for stronger demons instead of collecting a team early on and training them through the rest of the game. Give this game a chance even if you get the PC version with mod support.

Keeping this one sealed for my collection, as Shin Megami games tend to hold value well historically!

Worthy Update

This is a good remaster of a classic game. I'm docking it one star for not having any preorder bonuses for the physical edition. The differences between this and the original are negligible, really. People are whining about the compressed soundtrack and the fact it's running at 30fps instead of 60, but those are technical details that are really not important. I haven't noticed a difference and I have the original PS2 version as well. The main difference is the load times--there essentially are none on the Switch version. Dante from DMC is now a DLC character, and his place from the PS2 version is taken by Raidou Kuzunoha from the Devil Summoner spinoff series. I think that's a nice change of pace, and since I have the version with Dante in it (PS2), I'm not bothering to get the DLC package with Dante. Everything else is pretty much the same (okay they used a different font in the HD remaster, NBD), including the unholy difficulty level. They threw in a 'Merciful' difficulty for this for those who just want to enjoy the story. Masochists and gluttons for punishment should play Hard mode. Only reason I'm not having issues on Normal is because I've played this game before.
If you have a working PS2, are not a rabid SMT fan, and have a copy of this for that, there's no reason to run out and get it. Otherwise, this is a good RPG and worth the money they're charging.

Couple things to note. Dante from DMC 2 is going to be DLC. Not sure why he wasnt added but if you played the PS2 NA version do know you will need to shell out $10 for him. Great surprise to this game is that there is now voice acting. I had no idea upon playing but its great. Other than that its the exact game as the PS2 version with up res of the game. UI seems to be the original res as the PS2 but its not a distraction

Such a good port from PS2 to switch. Great quality. Screw the hater taters. It's a gripping and interesting plot. SAVE YOUR GAME TONS!! Don't forget to save any chance you get. This is a remaster, not a remake so it's definitely the same style as classic games in terms of mechanics. With that being said, if you love anime, angels, and demons, classic game style with HD graphics; then you'd love this game!

Very good game and a nice classic from the ps2 era. Great jrpg but the port and remastering not so much. Compressed music and frame rate issues keeps this at 4 stars.

Love to see SMT come to the switch. I just cannot fathom why they wouldn’t bring persona? As far as I know don’t doesn’t own any rights to it. That being said this game is fantastic on its own however it doesn’t feel like a “remaster” of any kind considering there’s still DLC to be purchased. Why wouldn’t it all be already included? It already came out in Japan years prior so to sell it again is kind of scummy. The only one I can kind of get is Dantae because of license. However for the price they’re asking for a ps2 era game is a bit much to ask for more for dlc and they aren’t cheap. The game itself is as you would expect from a SMT game abs setting the complainant aside this game is a solid RPG from a bygone era new gamers don’t see much anymore and I absolutely love it. It doesn’t hold your hand any however they do offer a new merciful difficulty for people new to SMT this is a perfect entry to start.

I've been looking forward to a remaster of this game for years and it works great. The newly added voice acting is phenomenal and the updated graphics are most notable playing in docked mode. There are minor frame-rate drops at times during fusion or the fiend cut-scenes, but otherwise its a 10/10 experience.

I played this on the PlayStation 2 originally, so I knew what I was in for. This turn-based Japanese role-playing game can be relentless in terms of difficulty, particularly with certain boss fights. That said, there is an easier difficulty that is available, which should still make this suitable for newcomers. This is great news, because I love the dark storyline that is presented here and the more people that are able to experience it, the better. One key difference between this version and the PS2 is that Dante from Devil May Cry no longer appears in cutscenes nor can he be obtained for your party unless you download the DLC (Capcom's gotta get their money after all). It's a little pricey for a remaster, but it is a lengthy RPG, so you're still getting a lot of bang for your buck.

My first SMT game was SMTIV, so that colors my perception a great deal. This game just feels old. It may be a "remaster", but the game still looks PS2 era to me and has the same amount of player unfriendliness. Limited save points, no recording of weaknesses, can only fuse in certain locations, ect. I am interested to continue playing it, but it shows its age in a way I think they could have fixed. Not so much a "remaster" as a "re-release"

Great game and entry point into the series! It's pretty tough and unforgiving at times but it is rewarding if you stick with it. Of course there's also a downloadable easier difficulty. Overall would recommend especially before SMTV release this year.
