Earlier this summer I acquired the Thrustmaster T128 Force Feedback Racing Wheel and have really put it through its paces with BeamNG on PC. Even a 7 year old that would make Godzilla run for cover uses this steering wheel regularly and it takes every bit of the beating without breaking a sweat. The included paddle shifters with this steering wheel is great for DCT transmissions, but something was missing. Something just didn't feel quite right. I needed to row some gears!
Enter this TH8S Shifter Add-On. First, there are two different ways to hook this shifter up to your gaming platform. For console gaming, you connect the shifter to the steering wheel, which would essentially be a parent controller. If you are using this shifter with a PC, you will use the USB connection directly into your tower. Luckily, both cords are included with this shifter. Unfortunately, the USB cable is entirely too short unless your tower is directly below your shifter setup. However, this is where the shortfalls end.
The feel of this shifter is amazing. The shifts are positive and definitive. There is a spring loaded return to center (neutral). It honestly feels similar to any modern manual transmission vehicle I have driven. The mounting method is also very secure and I have never found myself moving the shifter even during very spirited gaming. Godzilla Jr also has put it to the test without faulter.
If I had to suggest any improvements for future generations, I would obviously ask for a longer USB cable. Secondly, and maybe I am getting picky here, I would like a couple assignable buttons on the shifter. Maybe a button on the top of the shifter, and maybe another on the base somewhere. As someone who has a lot of seat time in a real race car, I would like to be able to have a linelock, transbrake, or n2o arming button near by shifter. Lastly, illuminated gears would be great, or even a digital display on the shifter telling you what gear is active. This last idea may be a little ricey, however I think it would add a "wow" factor, especially to those teenage videogamers.
Overall, fire up the game and go row!

Unboxing the Thrustmaster TH8S, you'll find the shifter, a USB-A to USB-C cable, a MINI DIN to MINI DIN cable, and some documentation. There's no physical manual, only online. The shifter includes 7 gears, plus the reverse gear, which should be plenty for most cases. On the side of the unit, there's a flathead screw that is used for shifting resistance adjustment. On the back, there's a MINI DIN port for console use and a USB-C port for both console and PC use.
For its price, the TH8S is very well-built. The unit feels hefty and durable, with fairly high-quality plastic. The only visible metal part of the shifter is the shaft. The clamp screw is unfortunately made of plastic, unlike the metal screw for my T150 wheel, though it shouldn't be a huge problem for longevity since the shifter isn't as heavy as a full wheel unit. The clamp keeps the unit very stable and allows almost no wobble when using the shifter. Shifting through gears feels very solid at the default resistance level, but can be adjusted to better suit your needs.
The TH8S connects to consoles either directly via the USB-A to USB-C cable or via the MINI DIN to MINI DIN cable connected to a Thrustmaster wheel, which then connects to the console through a single cable. However, the shifter only works on PC via the USB-A to USB-C cable, meaning you are required to give up an extra USB slot to use the shifter along with your wheel.
(Tested on PC) The shifter is fairly easy to set up on PC. Before plugging it in, you have to download the drivers from the Thrustmaster website and install them, then restart your computer and plug the shifter in (order is important, otherwise you have to restart the process). After driver installation, the shifter was detected and worked without issue in both tested games: Forza Horizon 5 and BeamNG. In game, the shifter is quick and responsive with no noticeable latency.
Overall, the Thrustmaster TH8S is a solid and reliable device for its price and can serve as a great addition to any entry-level racing sim setup.

Get ready to add an element of realism that would be missing if you didn’t have this Thrustmaster shifter added to your racing kit. I added this shifter to my Thrustmaster racing steering wheel and wow what an incredible difference. I already had the gas pedal and clutch kit and adding this just makes me want to build on the next level of driving simulation which would be an actual cockpit. I am thinking about it. I really like how sturdy the shifter can attach to multiple setups. I use mine gripped next to my wheel on the table for now and it works without falling or slipping. Thrustmaster nailed the mechanism that attaches the shifter to your setup just as they did with the force-feedback wheel I’m using - it is not going anywhere until you remove it. The shifter seamlessly integrates with my wheel and pedals and setup was really as easy as it gets. It just worked. FYI I know this isn’t compatible with some wheels out there so do your research on that. Thrustmaster has a great website for that information.
