Replacement Cable Box Alternative to beat the fees

Not gonna go too long on my review, I bought the Tivo Bolt for two reasons: 1. To avoid the fees to the cable company that I get my TV service from just for having a cable box and 2. To create a whole house DVR solution. My Current Cable provider doesn't provide whole house DVR like Dish and Directv does and the current Tivo technology can do a whole house solution when you pair Tivo minis which I strongly recommend as to pair it to the Tivo Bolt so you can watch TV and DVR recordings from anywhere in the house to view programming from other rooms. If you go this route, setup can be a pain because you have to get a CableCARD and a digital tuner from the cable company before you can begin the Tivo setup along with creating an account with them but once you are able to set it up in full it works very well. It took me a while to get use to the tivo menus and guide and figuring out how to setup recording but this investment is worth it to beat back at the cable companies ridiculous fees.

I have never been a Cable TV user. When Spectrum changed my plan from Stream only and offered me a cable card, I was in the market for a DVR that uses cable card. Unfortunately there is not a lot of options besides Tivo. As this is the only leading company who still supports cable card, I had a lot of expectations coming to this. Unfortunately I am a bit disappointed, while the device is fully packed with a lot of features. The UI looks outdated, but certainly much better than HDHomerun. The 4K apps are a plus, but I have Apple TV and so, it was not useful. The recording quality looks like any standard DVR from cable company. When compared with Channels DVR coupled with Nvdia Shield, I would rather prefer Channels DVR for it's good looking interface. Having said that, this not a bad option for someone looking for something that works out of the box.

    Good, but apps struggle

I purchased the Tivo Bolt a little over a year ago, the first thing I noticed was how out of date the Hulu app was, and now some time later the Prime app is the same way. I'll have issues where some titles will not play at all. I've done all sorts of network tests, and even reset the box, and the most that I can determine is that support for this device by the streaming services is on the way out. If you're using for OTA or Cable alone, you're probably okay, even Netflix is kept up to date, but if you're looking to tie in other apps, I'd say be cautious. Maybe look more into a Fire Recast or something along those lines. Recommend, but beware you may lose support for Apps soon.

Features on the Tivo make it worth while to replace my Comcast unit with this. Had to call Comcast to get all the channels on the cablecard. The Commercial skip feature on the major networks is fantastic on your recordings! Wish list is great. Channel guide is much better than Comcast's. Gotta watch out for suggestions because it will record a bunch of shows it feels you will watch. 13 house hunters and we don't watch the show. But you can turn it off easily. I also got the Tivo mini and it works great over my ethernet network. Get this on sale when they lower the price and pay for a year of Tivo subscription. Oh yea it integrates Netflix and Amazon prime along with the cable channels, no more searching!!

    High failure rate

I purchased not one ,but two of these units and each one was defective. The first unit operated for almost 5 days until it just showed a blank screen upon powering up.I contacted TIVO technical support and they went through the troubleshooting procedures. They confirmed that the first unit was defective.I returned it for a full refund. I thought that I would try another unit. This time the unit stopped working during the initial setup.Again I contacted technical support, and TIVO confirmed that this unit was malfunctioning as well. According to what I have read on the internet, the failures are widespread, some having to do with the inability to turn off the units(they run continuously). Please don’t waste your money on the TIVO Bolt Vox.

Great DVR and Fantastic user interface. Best on the market no doubt and a great price for a 4 tuner DVR. Only one minor annoyance is that the unit runs constantly and has this subtle high pitch whine to it. You won't hear it in a living room setting, but in the bedroom at night when trying to sleep in silence, its not good. Only thing I can think of is cheap components used (Fan) which then make me wonder about longevity. This noise is well documented on the support forums and Tivo responds by saying unplug and plug back in, which does nothing to resolve the noise. So as long as its not in a bedroom, you will be ok. So knocked off 2 stars for that miss by Tivo.

    Horrible One Pass Performance

Easy set up, great playback, easy streaming and fun features. Unfortunately if the main purpose for buying this is to never miss a favorite show this gets a zero. Horrible One Pass Performance. Records what it wants when it wants no matter what you have programmed it for. Recording is completely random. Sorry I made the investment. If you've had the DirectV dvr this is a major step back in performance. Tivo support is poor. All the great functions are worthless if it doesn't perform its primary function and the support isn't there to help correct the problem.

This DVR was a little difficult to set up and I was not happy with the fact that it required a monthly fee to access the TIVO service on top of the fact that it required Internet which already has a monthly fee. I was really looking for a DVR that would work directly with my Cable service which this does not seem to be the case with this one. Unfortunately the salesman misinformed me as to that fact and failed to mention the additional fee needed to operate this product after I specifically asked for a DVR that would work directly with my Cable without needing the internet or any other program.

I would not buy this if you are going to use it over the air. Mine said to update and it is stuck doing that. I contacted support and he told me my device was bad, then to get a replacement they want me to buy a subscription. To register you are ask to purchase a subscription and if you do not you cannot register it. I did not do this and they told me I was stuck with the defected device. I am very unhappy with a $210 paper weight!

We moved from a CETON and windows media center (win7) to this box due to growing compatibility issues. We especially like how the Tivo will show us streaming options for current live TV that may be available online (Hulu, amazon, Netflix, etc). It plays very nice with Comcast, and the guide and voice controls are even better than Comcast X1, makes that box look "dumb". Not to mention, sports actually shows sports, movies, etc. without a bunch of additional options. It also remembers what teams I watch, and ensures they are on the top of the list....It is a great device!

I have had various Tivo systems over the years. This one has a lot of features I may never use. But my hangup is the remote. In times past the remote would light up allowing you to easily use it in the dark. The new remote I literally have it in my right hand and my cell phone with its light in the other so I can see where the little buttons that are frequently used are located. I would still overall recommend tosomone as Tivo spoils you with the way you can skip or at least fast forward through commercials of recorded shows.

If you want to cut the cable this is the device to do it with. The TiVo is a super product. It will not disappoint. The interface and program menus are easy to read, navigate and are well thought out. It can time shift 4 programs at once. The picture quality and sound are superior to any cable box (even with OTA antenna) and it search functions are outstanding. It also connects to several streaming services such as Amazon Prime, Hulu and U-Tube, it truly is a complete package

This box is almost all you need. Great reception of broadcast channels and huge selection of apps. Only thing missing is iTunes. 4k streaming works really well. Voice activated search works across all your platforms. If using cable it needs a cable card but works very well. User interface is intuitive and superior to dvr supplied by our cable company. We cut the cable about a year ago and have all we need with broadcast channels and the apps. LOVE OUR TIVO!!!

We bought this Tivo box to replace our old one that broke. Some features are better but some features were definitely better/faster on our old box. Also, we have an older model in our bedroom that we can't sync with this new one. We can no longer transfer programs from our upstairs Tivo box to the new one in the family room. What a bummer! Very disappointing. Shouldn't all Tivo boxes be in sync with each other! ?

The bolt has more bells and whistles but it has dropped some of the features my TiVo® Premiere had. For example, it had a port that I could hook to my DVD recorder if I wanted to keep a copy without loading the Tivo up or having to use auxiliary storage. It is also disappointing to find out the "lifetime" of the Tivo interface is not really lifetime.

My wife bought me the Vox as a gift and it has been wonderful. We mostly stream but have an HD antenna for local stations. It is a better tuner than our Vizio has built in. It is really nice to record the things we do use it for. Saves us more than it costs in a year to buy just some of the showed we previously only streamed. I’ve not been at all dissatisfied with it to date.

Pleasantly surprised by the capabilities of TiVo. Rising cable bill costs mostly due to equipment left me really unhappy. Snagged this, a cable card, a a few TiVo minis, and things changed overnight. It is a bit of an investment, but when you calculate box fees over a several year period, this is peanuts.

It was disappointing to be forced to pay for a TiVo subscription to use recorder. Information in advertising was not clear on this. I was already receiving same channels with a good quality OTA antenna. I probably would have bought TiVo anyway if advertising had been clear and honest. system works good and was easy to set up.

Great system works well only complaint is you can’t view on demand shows. Another disappointment is if you get the pay channels you have to get a box to use through spectrum. You can only add a mini if you hardwire unless you are really good with electronics then you can download a different program which seemed to hard to get done so i passed.

Tivo needs to do a better job to ensure the satisfaction of the customer. Setup is not as straight forward as it should be because you need your cable company to cooperate too. We had issues with HD channels and tivo blames the cable company and the cable company blames tivo. What a headache.
