Finally a fun Transformers G1 game

I've been looking forward to this game since I saw the trailers from E3. It's been a few weeks and after finally having played through the campaign with one of the characters, I've walked away with mixed feelings so far. The look and feel of the game is probably the game's strongest feature. It stays true to the 80's character I would assume most people who buy this are familiar with... Same goes with the voices, the game could have easily gone south had they chose not to cast a lot of the original voice actors. I'm assuming they could not license the original cars as their vehicle forms only resembles Beetles, a Lancia and a Lamborghini Countach. The gameplay is where the game really shines as one would expect from Platinum Games. The combo system combined with the dodge/parry system is fluid and crisp. The story is mediocre and feels much like a 2 part episode we would catch after school. It comes nowhere near the movie (or the Five Faces of Darkness) and there are poor copy cat 80's level songs (that try to capture the feel of the movie). But, I am pleased with the number of Decepticons that make appearances in the game. Where the game lacks is in level design. The lack of scenery and different environments makes it feel really, really repetitive. I was wondering why the $49.99 price tag on release day and now I feel like I know. There also is a lot to be desired when it comes to looting. When you complete a level and review your newly found weapons, the design of the weapons were simple yet stayed true to the G1 fashion. What wasn't explained was what weapons to get rid of and what to keep. Before you know it, your inventory is maxed out and you're spending 5 minutes trying to make room. Overall, knowing what I know now, I would still purchase the game. I finished the game with Bumblebee first, thinking that he would be the least fun, but after attempting my second playthrough, my attention span is finding it more of a challenge. I'm hoping that there's a sequel to Devastation and keeping my fingers crossed that we get to play as G1 Decepticons.

    Aesthetically Great, Mechanically Sound

The game's visuals may as well be taken from the 80's animated movie. Any older fan is going to love the look of the game, the original voice actors reprising their roles, and may even enjoy all the new backstory being added from the comic book line. When it comes to the gameplay, it's got a lot to offer, but not quite up to standard Platinum Games standards. The people who developed this game also developed Bayonetta 1 and 2 as well as Wonderful 101, and it shows. Between temporarily slowing down time on a perfectly timed dodge to combo finishers, this is certainly a Platinum game through-and-through. Each map also allows for a variety of collectibles to be discovered, with the little tiny fire guys being incredibly annoying. There are plenty of treasures to discover as well, used for upgrading weaponry and unlocking combat status modifiers. However, these are just tools to make the game seem more complex than it really is. Choose an Autobot whose combat style matches your preferences and go fight Decepticons. It's not Platinum's best action game, but it's probably one of the best Transformers games we'll be getting for years to come.

I'm a huge Platinum Games fan, & I'm a huge Transformers fan. This game is basically you playing an elongated episode or maybe a movie, & that especially goes for the length because I beat it in one sitting without even trying. Yes, Platinum is notorious for short games, & a lot of their value is in replay on higher difficulties. There's just something about this one where it really bothers me. It still plays like a dream & never really lets its foot off the throttle from beginning to end, but I feel like I can only recommend this to huge fans of BOTH Platinum & Transformers. For the Platinum fans, this game has some serious exploitables that could make the game a breeze on almost any difficulty. And for Transformers fans, it might just be too difficult if you aren't also a regular video game player. If you're only a fan of one or the other, then I'd say wait for a sale. And if you're not a fan, this isn't going to win you over.

I had been following this game since its announcement at E3, and I must say, the wait was worth it! The game brings back my love and adoration for the original G1 series that I used to watch as a kid in the 80's. The cell shading gives each character a nice "cartoonish" feel (in a good way) harking back to the original cartoons themselves. Most of the voice talent from the 80's show is back to voice their robots, except for Starscream since the original voice actor has passed away. Overall, this game is massive amounts of fun, and I would reecommend it to any fan of Platinum Games or G1 Transformers!!

I was actually thinking of removing 2 stars, but I gave back 1 because they used the original voices from the old school tv series. Maybe its a copyright issue, but they should have used the music from the original tv series to give it a classic feel. They also should have also programmed "blaster" sound affects for each respective character as their blasters were not all created equal. i.e. The blaster for Optimus Prime should not sound like the blaster for every other character. His blaster had a much stronger/deeper sound. Other than this, the game is jam-packed with combos and non stop action.

If you're a fan of the 80's Transformers show then you'll like this game. The graphics are great and you'll feel like you're in the cartoon. Original voice actors add to the nostalgia. However, the game is short and can be beaten in 5-7 hours. Also, the weapon customization/upgrades weren't really helpful for me. I just stuck with one weapon per character and mashed buttons. I wouldn't pay full price for this; I would wait for a sale (I got mine on Black Friday). It's a fun game and the game that Transformers fans have been waiting for.

I was really stoked about this coming out. The graphics are flawless. The characters have the voices from the original Transformers cartoon. Very nice touch. The gameplay moves too quick and at times it's hard to appreciate the graphics. Noticed it was priced $10 cheaper at launch than most games but chalked that up to the limited marketing the game received. My 7 year old son has enjoyed playing it more than me. I gets most kicks out of transforming to hear the sound effect "eh ew eh eh eh ew" ....classic!!

There's so much good to say about TFD so to sum things up: Amazing graphics and animations, deluxe presentation (designs based on the Transformers The Movie animated film which were very detailed), great combat system (a simplified "Bayonetta" fighting engine), lots of cameos and winks for true Transformers fans, super exciting action, ginormous bosses. Only gripe: levels are a bit repetitive. But just being able to play with Grimlock and him being SO FUNNY in this game is a great payoff. Recommended.

Bought this game as a Christmas present for my 5 year old son. He has really enjoyed it so far. The animation looks kind of like an anime cartoon I would say and it also has the original voices of some of the cast from the cartoon so for those of us who grew up watching transformers it will bring you back. The gameplay is not too difficult for him but at the same time pretty entertaining for me as an adult as well. Awesome buy, reward yourself if you are a Transformers fan.

This game should not be missed by fans of Transformers or action games in general. It felt like I was playing my favorite childhood cartoon show. It's cel-shaded graphics are a perfect fit for this game. The gameplay is fast and combo heavy with very smooth animations. The voice acting makes me happy to hear most of the original cast reprising their g1 roles. Also the music fits perfectly for the action. The only flaw is some repetive backgrounds.

The game is a great blend of nostalgia for transformers fans of old. However, that is just the surface, everything else feel modern and tight as an action game with plenty of depth with weapons and characters. The level design is well thought out with lots of secrets. With the higher difficulty modes enabled from the beginning you will be able to challenge yourself right from the start. Streaming also works great as you can get some great moments.

I've been a fan of Transformers since I was a kid so there's no surprise that I enjoy the game. Though I'm not good first-person role Games, I found myself doing better than usual. Maybe it's because I had more invested in playing the game or there weren't so many combinations that I had to learn. Either way I had a lot of fun and if you're a Transformers fan you probably really enjoy this game to.

When I first saw videos of this game online, I was very excited to pre-order this game. I'm glad they finally went retro 80's for this release. TransFormers fans have been waiting for this kind of game. Optimus being Optimus and a villain like Devastator causing havoc. So I thank the developers for making this game and the original actors for loaning their services to produce this game. Yes, buy it !!

First of all, I have to say this won't be as fun going in blind. Definitely for fans. This is a Platinum game, so it's no cakewalk either. But if you know the source material and enjoy a slight challenge, then this game is for you. It's like playing the cartoon! My only gripe is how short this game is. It left you with a "um... that's it?" feeling. Overall fun for fans but less so for regular folks.

I came at this from the perspective of a person who enjoys high intensity action games that the developer, Platinum Games, is known to put out. I came away very happy with the outcome that even with a property like Transformers that they can still make a very fun action game out of it. If you enjoy something like Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising then you'll likely enjoy this as well.

Anyone of the true Transformers era will find it hard not to love this game. Voice acting is on point despite some of the original actors sadly passing away, and the visuals are so spot on to the cartoon that you can't help but feel that you are a part of it. Gameplay is very simple yet enjoyable and definitely has replayability despite the relatively short campaign. I loved it.

This game is really great for those of us that grew up in the 80's and 90's watching transformers the cartoon. Not the abominations that are Michael Bay films. The cell shading has you back in the show, the voices are pretty much nailed on correct e.g.Starscream. Platinum Games made Bayonetta and continue to make fun action oriented games. Awesome.

I enjoyed the retro feel of this game; it was like a playable version of the '80s cartoon I loved growing up. Even the voice actors are the same (except for Starscream). Still, there were a few issues. First, the game gets quite repetitive and secondly, I would have liked a better playable character selection. I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this game.

I really like this game! The art style is amazing and the action is never ending. I love Platinum Games fighting style. This is a true throwback for Transformers fans. I like that it is a focused game that doesn't take too long to beat. There are plenty of open world games out there... I'm glad there is something for a person with limited time to play.

The combat is fun, and the retro look of the old cartoons was cool but overall the game was quite repetitive, the backgrounds were over used too much and it lacked depth or a good story. It was also too short. Its a good effort with polished controls and solid gameplay like Platinum Games other titles, but like those titles thats all it has.
