I was browsing my local store and came across the Bluray disc for a very good price (under $10). I was not familiar with this movie, but was interested due to Scarlett Johanssen being the lead. Unfortunately, I found the story to be progressing very slowly over the first 45 minutes and I actually fell asleep. I have not yet finished the rest of the film. I guess every movie can't be a "Lucy" quality film!

At first my thought was "this feels like someone less awesomely ridiculous than Tobe Hooper got to direct Lifeforce" and that remains true.
This is one of those films that while I was in the moment it didn't hook me, but hours later I am thinking about it. It doesn't fully tell a story so much as it implies story beats to be interpreted and connect.
It is a slow and quiet movie, often relaxing thanks to a slow pace, the music, photography and most importantly the sound design which is out of this world. The murmur of crowds, sounds of the day, nature all of it conspires to make the horror elements oddly relaxing and tranquil. Terrible things are happening but the movie has lulled you into a passive state. It is an interesting effect and I'm not sure I've encountered it before.
It certainly does have its problems and its greatest strengths are also its weaknesses. The slow pacing is effective but also makes things feel long. Mostly it is the lack of real actors, instead using regular people who are often unaware they are in a movie which causes there to be flat, hard to understand dialogue and a lack of forward momentum. The motorcycle guy isn't particularly important either and probably could be scrapped.
I do love how as ScarJo is learning about humans she is overwhelmed and she starts to try and understand and mimick humans it leads to her downfall. Such is humanity.
You can immediately know Under The Skin will be divisive from its tone, pacing and lack of clarity but it will also be talked about for a long time. It ends up being weirdly soothing.

Disguised as a human, extraterrestrial Laura comes from her home planet in search of earthly beings to send back to her employer. Arriving in Scotland she seeks out lonely hitchhikers to seduce, but can she keep her true identity hidden forever? A sexy Scarlett Johansson movie from 2013.

Okay, my wife had read about this movie in one of her women's mags and wanted me to get it. She described the basic plot line, leading me to think that it would be a redo of Species. It wasn't.
Think about crossing Species, without the action, sensuality, or bravado with 2001, without Kubric's compelling management of the camera. It is European in approach, with long close ups of people driving, staring at rearview mirrors, random crowd shots, and people walking. For the longest time I thought that the point of the movie was to prove that the star, Scarlett Johansson, knew how to drive, because many long sequences of her doing just that pervade the first part of the movie.
Its bulled as erotic. It isn't. There is nudity but it is functional and not expressive. It was described as flooding your senses. It does take long periods to do anything.
The lack of traditional score, the surprisingly eire alien performance of SJ,
and the very expressionistic kill scenes do make for an unsettling experience but the director's method is quite awkward and he works too hard to make it look naturalistic. It becomes an exercise in patience.
Having said all of that, the plot is interesting and the film does accomplish an unsettling view of human nature, without the traditional explanatory exposition. You just have to be patient. My wife, who you recall wanted me to get this, wasn't and crashed out. I am glad that I finished it, as by the end, the effort toward naturalistic, understated cinematic style, though tough for an American use to a more polished style, did lead to a more brutal ending. SJ's awkward performance makes her quite believable in the part that she'd portraying and I was very impressed with what she accomplished. I think that the director could have trusted her more and laid off the long sequences of nothing-scenes.
Did I like it? I am not sure. It was interesting and I may have to watch it again. I will say that it left me subtly disturbed.
If that was the objective, and the fun-house mirror view of humanity, showed in slow motion, was a goal, then it worked. The abstract nature of imagery kept a lot of mystery and the main star’s disconnected performance made for a more human than human empathy, leading to the viewer becoming both connected and repelled by the story.
If you go into it expecting an arty approach, instead of a traditional four-color depiction, you might find the experience worth while.

This movie is not for everyone. The film plays out like a good Twilight Zone or Outer Limits episode. It manages to avoid most common tropes. Be warned - it will make you uncomfortable at times. I felt the ending was a bit weak but the ride was worth it. Scarlett Johansson really gave it her all and deserves recognition for the level of commitment she made to this little indy film. I was generous to give it 4 stars but truly creative efforts like this need support. I was not happy with the ending so no 5. If you read the book the film is only similar in the most broadest brushes. I liked it overall.
Parents: There is some language, violence and frontal nudity (male and female). All of this made sense in context and was not gratuitous.

Whether it is Lucy or ghost in the shell it seems like Hollywood's go to creepy girl lead has become scarlet Johansen even in comedy movies it seems they take on a darkly comic genre rather than a actual comedy. This is a rather unfortunate thing as her talent range should be placing her in movies with far better plot and Scripts, but if you were a fan of the two movies I mentioned earlier and there is a good chance you will actually consider this a 4 1/2 star movie however I wasn't thrilled with either of those movies and this reminds me of a bad Terrence Malick film and all his films are horrible and completely unwatchable so that's how this got three stars because it was at least watchable until the end although cringe worthy. The other factor in my reading was the above average every day low price featured on Best Buy.com which was the reason it was bought and gambled on so for that reason Take a chance and trust that you won't be out enough money thanks to Best Buy to be angry if you don't enjoy this whatsoever.

This movie was definitely a weird experience to watch though there are nude scenes i had no idea about. It was game of thrones with the wieners on screen.
