A story too long in telling

My Dad was on the Doyle when it was called to rescue the Indiannapolis survivors and, while familiar with the historical version of what happened, the movie drives home the anguish and the suffering of the survivors. And, if you paid attention to Jaws, you had an inclining of what happened when you listen to Quint tell the tale. But, I though the production values could have been better and they probably should have spent a little more adding to the cast so that you could be presented with the hundreds of sailors left in the water after the sinking. Without the additional extras, you couldn't grasp the enormity of how many were lost. Also, I'm not sure Nick Cage was the best choice to play the captain, but he did an adequate job. Despite some of those production shortcomings, it's a worthwhile film to view to drive home the sacrifices and the trauma of World War II.

We had not seen this movie when it was at the theaters. We wanted to see how they showed this true story especially with Nicolas Cage.

I am disappointed that you keep downsizing the DVD department. Some people, mostly around my age, would like to have DVD's instead of a "digital" copy of a movie. I don't want to watch movies on my phone or my computer. That is why I purchased a big screen tv with surround sound! Please do not do away with this department. There are really no other stores that have a good selection that you can walk in and look at to purchase.

Very interesting movie about a true US Navy ship that brought one of the atomic bombs from America to a forward area to be used against Japan. Ship was suppose to get escort and was not provided any. Ship was sunk and hundreds died before rescue. What can go wrong did. Only ship during WWII that Captain was held accountable!

The chief complaints I read about this film, is it wasn't "action packed" or "a feel good war story". Being a Marine and a history fan... war is NOT "feel good". Now, ever since I saw JAWS, I was captivated by Robert Shaw giving his speech about the Indianapolis... and how the sharks took half the crew. This film takes the account from JAWS and puts it on full display. The Indianapolis is a story about survival and what the cost of war is. Fully recommend to any war/historical fans. If you're looking to be entertained... this film is NOT for you.

It is too bad this movie didn't make it to local theaters. The Indianapolis delivered THE most important "package" to end WWII, and for their courage and a few FUBARS, lost many lives, along with their ship, in a particularly gruesome way. This story is based on true events of the day.

Movie with Nicolas Cage about the true story of a secret mission with the Navy near the end of WWII between U.S. and Japan. It is a solid movie with war scenes and the true events of the navy ship that delivered the first 2 atomic bombs that were used to end the war with Japan.

It is a good movie. It is far from my favorite but a decent watch. I think it is a story that needs to be told as not too many people know about it. That said I am sure it could have been done better.

nicholas cage as captain of the U.S.S Indianapolis is one of the best war movies i have ever watched i have seen most of them the bravery of these navy sailers in the face of horrible tragedy is a credit to the navy & all the armed forces of the U.S But what happened to the captain afterwards in washington disturbed me greatly he was a true hero and president clinton exonerating him in 1998 was the least they should have done i would have given him and many of his crew the congressional medal of honor

I think it shows what our fighting men had to the ordeal and survive in terrible situations and show how the actions of others can make outcomes get so bad. A must see for those that haven't known about the ship loss in the future and how the ship help end the war

This movie does an excellent job of portraying the agony these men went through. The corruption of the government and the railroading of the captain is especially important. Nice performances by Nicolas Cage and Tom Sizemore!

Even though I knew the story of the USS Indianapolis (read a book and saw the black and white film years ago) I still purchased this movie. If you like war movies based on actual events, this is well worth the purchase price.

This movie surprised me by keeping my interest and delivering a good story. I just know a general history of the Indianapolis, so I'm not sure if the details in the story were accurate. I was entertained, though.

A Tragic Tale of Great Significance

I may be biased as to my rating of this film. I read about the fate of the crew of the USS INDIANAPOLIS about 10years ago in a magazine. The article focused on the ordeal of the sailors in the shark infested waters of the Philippine Sea. Upon watching this film, however, I learned a great deal more about the mission of this ship and its crew that eventually turned the tide of the second world war.

This movie is the story of the USS Indianapolis, a heavy cruiser sunk just before WW II ended. Due to various circumstances, no one knew the ship had been sunk until a routine reconnesance flight found the drifting survivors. This is a tale of great sadness and incredible determination to survive. It's not for the faint hearted, but it is a much watch movie to understand the courage of our military forces.
