    Awesome Blue Ray

War of the Worlds arrives on Blu-ray with an impressive 1080p, 1.85:1-framed transfer that's reflective of Director Steven Spielberg's intended visual style. As the film opens, it features something of a blown-out look about it that's excessively bright with some intentional blooming effects and desaturated colors, all of which often influence the characters' flesh tones and surrounding colors. This palette gives the film a throwback look and feel that borders on looking black-and-white in a couple of dusty gray city scenes, but there's still a fair amount of color to be found throughout the movie, particularly on Rachel's multicolored winter apparel. War of the Worlds isn't always razor-sharp; several scenes and backgrounds wander towards a soft, mushy texture, though again, such seem in-line with the director's vision and style and not necessarily reflective of an error in the transfer-to-Blu-ray process. The transfer isn't always impeccably defined, but it's instead raw, gritty, uncertain, not always under control, not always perfectly-staged and framed, which only accentuates the film's style and story. Black levels are consistently deep and true without ever appearing too bright or, on the other end of the spectrum, absorbing fine details where they shouldn't. The picture does enjoy a strong film-like look thanks to a thick layer of grain that's maybe even a bit heavier than that seen in Minority Report and Saving Private Ryan. War of the Worlds does not offer high definition "eye candy" in the traditional sense, but it is reflective of the way the film is supposed to look, which is the ultimate compliment to any Blu-ray, no matter how rough around the edges it may be.

I love this movie when it came out. I had my first surround sound system. You have to turn up the sound when the aliens come out the ground.

Speilberg / cinematography and locations of scenes make this movie a must watch. Iconic Steelbook pays homage to the original.

For an intense movie such as this, it is quite anticlimactic. Still, it's Spielberg and he's better than most even on a Sunday stroll.

This review is for the 4K Steelbook version of War of the Worlds. I won't review the actual movie, except to say that since I purchased it, it must be pretty entertaining, which it is. Instead, I will focus on the product itself. I have ordered many steelbooks from Best Buy and have always had positive experiences, both with the actual item as well as Best Buy's ordering process. This time was no different. The steelbook arrived as scheduled and the packaging was undamaged. The steelbook itself was undented, with no scratches or scuffs. Being a collector of steelbooks, this is very important to me. Also, the artwork on both the outer cover of the steelbook as well as the inside of the case is really cool. As for the 4K transfer of the film, aside from a few scenes of natural graininess, this is a very crisp and vibrant transfer. Definitely a step up from the regular bluray version. I would highly recommend this 4K version of War of the Worlds.

A very pretty steel book, its glossy and unfortunately it has no bossing or debossing anywhere. But the inside artwork is also very good.

I saw this in the movies when it was first released and thought it was great fun! Although my DVD copy looked good on our old television, it didn't stand up so well to the test of our new 4K Samsung. I had put off buying the blu-ray version because all the reviews I read were mediocre at best. I'm happy to say that the 4K edition of this film was well worth the wait. Also, we checked out the blu-ray that came packaged with the 4K version and the reviews were correct...lots of glowing and halos around whites and sunlit areas, loss of detail in shadows, etc. The 4K version is sharp and has great texture, color, etc. In all honesty, this is NOT a reference quality video presentation so don't put it in your player and expect it to look like Ready Player One. But of the three versions I've seen, the 4K is definitely the best War of the Worlds has ever looked!

Dakota Fanning screaming in the movie was the low point, but the special effects and design made up for it

It's my belief that this is a modern classic. Is it the greatest movie? No. But does it still hold up? Yes. Seeing this now as a parent makes the theme of letting go vs protecting your loved ones hit different. The post 9/11 sentiment still works however the ending still leaves something to be desired. Picture-wise this movie is very grainy yet detailed, dark and yet very bright at times - definitely better than the DVD but not by as much as I would've liked. Sound-wise I love this track - Dolby Atmos is immersive but slightly thinner on bass than I remember.

The movie itself is a good time but the transfer is something less desirable. Too dark, extremely grainy and blurry in some scenes. It seems like it might be a bootleg placed in the steelbook. I’d think about returning but I like the steelbook and it didn’t cost much.
