||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this hard drive to store backups of my brand new Retina MacBook Pro. Being a USB3 drive, the performance of this drive is much faster than the drive it replaced (an older version of this drive). Western Digital has gotten much better about how it configures these drives out of the box. In the past, they had that stupid partition with the WD software (which, at least for the Mac, was totally pointless) that was next to impossible to get rid of. Not so with this drive. Of course, I still reformatted the drive (as I would recommend you do with any hard drive you purchase) before its first use. My only worry about this (and any Western Digital drive) is they've had a spotty reliability record in the past. I've heard they've improved, so for the price of this drive, I'm willing to give it a try.

Does not always work

I have a 2009 iMac which is up to date with everything. From day one I had trouble with it. Upon plugging in, the computer would read it and then the icon would disappear and it would turn off. I found that the only way to keep it on was once I plugged it in and the icon appeared, I’d have to double click on it to keep it running. Definitely does not work for Time Capsule. Also, the diagnostic software that comes with it causes the drive to turn off when you try to run a diagnosis on it. Returned it and got a Seagate Slim for Mac and no issues yet.

Great product for doing your own backups

I create a new folder once a week, name it with the current date and then copy all documents and photos to that folder. Plenty of capacity before you need to start deleting old folders which you no longer need anyway.
