Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the ease of use, portability, and solid-state technology of the My Passport SSD. Many appreciate its compact size and lightweight design, although some find the included cable to be insufficiently long. The ample storage capacity is also a plus for users needing to back up important files.

This is a great portable drive. It’s small, moves fast and looks good. I love using this with my iPad Pro. The only con I have with this is that it will be gin to get heated while using it, but overall this is a awesome purchase.

I bought the first one a few weeks ago, and liked it so much, I got the second one a week later. I also got the HP ENVY Desktop TE01-0014 with its 512GB internal SSD from Best Buy. Now I have quick startups and quick disk response with what amounts to a 1.5TB SSD system, connecting my 2 512GB SSD external drives with Belkin USB-C (3.1) cables. The USB 3.1 cables may be overkill since I think the TE01-14 usb ports are USB 3.0. Nevertheless I love the fast response compared to my old standard internal/external hard drive systems.

This external ssd harddrive is excellent for consoles. It loads my games up in seconds. It is very small it can fit in the palm of your hand. In my picture it is that small box sitting on top of my seagate external hard drive.

I got the 512gb SSD for my Xbox One X after my 1tb Touro died the other day. First off I use this drive to play whatever games I'm playing the most at that moment and I have a 4tb WD Easystore to hold the majority of my library. This SSD is very small something like 1.5"Wx3" L x 3/8” thk. The weight is next to nothing and you could let this SSD just hang from your computer if you want it's that light. Design is ok but I could do without the rib design and would rather it have a rubbery grip to it so that it's not easy to drop. This has no problems reading and writing around 500mbs even tho it says it can do 540mbs. This has the latest Gen 2 USB 3.1 cable. Warranty is 3 yrs and they do give you a 6" USB type C to C cable w/ Type A adapter that can be slid on the end. The drive itself does get a little warm but nothing major and this drive also made loading games like Forza 7, RDR2 & PUBG nothing cutting some times in half and not making any difference in other instances. On PUBG using this drive I'm now always the 1st to load in and I never have issues with stuff not loading correctly. Highly recommended for anyone needing fast storage or playing video games. Just wish I could've got the 1tb version but overall I'm not disappointed at all with this drive. WD did it again!

This thing is pretty fast and very very small. It is also very light but seems pretty durable. It gets a little warm, which might be normal. Good ssd though.

Got this as a backup for my dad. The capacity is not huge, but neither is the amount of data needing to be backed up. It's very fast, very light and reliable. It comes with a USB C cable and has an adapter for a standard Type A (the traditional) connection. I usually don't use the software that comes with stuff, but this was the simplest solution for my dad's computer. It automates the process and allows you to browse for individual files or restore as a batch. The price for all SSD is pretty good. If you are not in need of speed, the traditional HDD (spinning disc) models will cost less and give you higher capacity.

It's been working well, seems to be pretty quick. I use it for the back up of my MacBook Pro. The cable that comes with it is short, thick and stiff, and can make it hard to use in a small space. Not the drives fault, I've had connectivity issues with every USB-C drive connected, and getting the nasty gram that it has improperly disconnected. While they're just sitting there overnight, a couple times per night. It's frustrating, and concerns me for the life expectancy of the drive. It's a super hand warmer. It seems to stay really warm all the time. I deducted the star because it staying warm all the time concerns me, the really thick and stiff cord, and because I believe USB-C connections in general are suspect. I do believe I'd get another one.

This external SSD works like a charm. It looks great, is nice and compact, and comes with a great manual, warranty, and all the cords you need. I would definitely make sure you have the right cords and ports for your devices, and also would advise getting a Thunderbolt 3 cord since those cords help transfer data at speeds up to 40gb if you have the compatible ports to boot.

I am a mobile DJ that moves around and sets up for gigs weekly. Overall, I've had success with WD drives. I think this is a fine choice for those people who will not move it around too often, meaning on a daily or even weekly basis. Main reason is that the cable is way too short for reasonable use. If your laptop is laying on a table with no pad underneath and you will need at least 8 inches of empty desktop space beside it so that it lays flat. If you use a cooling pad, forget it, it will hang on the USB port as in the picture. Being that the cable too short, it doesn't bend well enough and becomes a burden making it's use annoying. Forget using this on an airplane, in an airport or a coffee shop with small tables. So I figured, "maybe I can use a USB extension cable I have on hand", but then I will have 5 points of contact instead of 2. Which means more possible points of failure. Why 5 you ask? Because WD cut corners and decided to just include a USB C - USB 3 adapter instead of offering a dedicated (long enough) direct USB C - USB 3. I would have contact with adapter and another contact with the extension cable. Too much Jerry rigging for something that doesn't have to be this complicated (Sorry Jerry). Samsung T5 offers 2 different cables meaning direct contact from SSD to computer, whatever your ports happen to be. It's long enough to fold away, saving you space. WD totally missed the mark on this design and their product engineers may have thought they were being forward thinking. But real world application tanks. One other point that may or may not be an issue is the plastic case. Compared to the all metal housing T5, it's a downside. Samsung really set the bar high for the SSD and WD just can't jump that high. I'm not hard on my equipment and baby my stuff. So, I wasn't as worried about the plastic case. But, If I can get metal vs plastic and a better cable, I'll choose Samsung for the same price. It's a no brainer. It's not a bad SSD at all as far as actually storing data and probably just as good in that aspect as the T5. But, the whole point of being external is that it is portable and functionality and ease of use is a big deal. When that is compromised, it doesn't make it so great. If it's for storing stuff as a backup and sit in a drawer when not in use, then fine. Or if it will stay plugged in and not move, sure. Otherwise, probably not for most people on the go. I'd really give it 2.5 stars but I'm feeling nice today so it gets only 3.

    SSD WD drives the best

After discovering that if you drop an external hard drive 1 time on a hard floor you loose your back up I switched to solid state drives. I own 5 solid state drives all are western digital. Any of them will fit in a shirt pocket. Unlike thumb drives they are really fast. They are not just a memory stick they have electronics which gives them their speed and hardware encryption. When you plug this in for the first time management software will load on your computer from the drive. It will do stuff like let you set up encryption if you want it. After that just plug it in and you can see the drive in explorer. It works just like an internal drive. This is easy to use. They are tough, you can haul them around or drop them and they still work. The price for 512 GB or 1TB is very reasonable and big enough for most users. WD quality is great. If I need another drive tomorrow I will get another WD ssd from Best Buy I would and have recommended these to a friend.

This SSD easily connected to my MacBook Pro, completes 3GB file transfers quickly and is very compact. I copied my home video collection of 192 DVDs, averaging 2.5GB each, onto one 512GB drive. I'll buy three more, to copy all of my files onto and then gift one to each of my kids.

    Great SSD over HDD Options

No reason to ever buy one of those platter drives again, now that these externals exist. USB is capable of transferring a lot of data, but those 5400RPM speed Hard Drives only get out 76MB per second. These do over 500MB, so it's not even a contest. These are smaller in size too, so they take up less space than Hard Drives too. If I ever need more space on my Surface, and need to use it to more than just store things, I'll buy these any day over a Hard Drive option.

I purchased this to go with my Xbox One X. I already had a 4TB external, and added this to the mix to hold whatever five or so games that I’m currently playing. Performance is noticeably better than a platter external drive. Setup was very easy, I plugged it in, the system formatted it, and I started moving games to it. My only very minor complaint is the short length of the included cord, but the drive sits behind the Xbox and I never touch it, so it’s not a problem. This is a pretty good solution until higher capacity SSDs come down in price.

I purchased this as a dedicated drive for current games I'm playing on my Xbox One X. I did have to leave the SSD behind the console as the provided cable doesn't allow much in terms of placement. It will still reach around to the side of the system but will not lay flat due to stiffness of the cable. The transfer rates will of course be a night and day difference from the internal drive of the One X. Performs well, design is neat and the build is solid. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a decent external SSD.
