You see this? You want this. You know why?
It's a Western Digital, start there.
It's a Red Plus = Fast, reliable, NAS.
It's the right price.
AND
It's the actual best model offered...
It's the WD40EFPX model, meaning...
- It's a CMR drive (not the cheaper, less reliable and slower SMR drive).
- It has a 256mb buffer (not 128mb)
- It's a PLUS series... Faster than Red, slower than Pro, still super fast for an HDD.
- It's built to last... for servers, RAID and home use.
Oh, and it's almost the same price as a Blue (entry level).
Bottom line, for backup and daily access... GET THIS!!!

I picked up the 4TB model (WD40EFPX) for a small Synology setup running RAID 1, and after several months of use, there's genuinely not much to complain about. It's a CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) drive, which matters. WD caught flak a few years back for quietly shipping SMR drives under the Red label, but the Red Plus line uses CMR across the board. That means better sustained write performance and more predictable behavior in RAID rebuilds, which is exactly what you want in a NAS.

I recently purchased 4 of these to replace the old drives in my 7 yr. old EX4100 NAS configured to RAID 5. I hope the new ones hold up just as well. Had issues backing up loads of data and then uploading. I believe the bugs were not in the drives but issues with the other devices and wifi. WD support was excellent and attentive. Take pics of the serial numbers before installing.

I bought the WD Red Plus 4TB for my home NAS running TrueNAS, and it’s been rock solid so far. The drive runs quietly, stays cool, and has been working 24/7 without any issues. I’m using it in a RAID setup, and the performance is great — good read/write speeds and all SMART values are healthy. If you’re building a home server or upgrading storage, this is a solid choice. I’m already planning to grab another one to expand my array

I had a WD EX2 NAS drive with one slot filled with a 4tb WD Red Drive. Added this one to give me twice the storage for backup. It was easy to format using the EX2 software. Works great, as long as you use two drives that are the same size.

i have thousands of photo and many GB of files ,, that i need lots of space ,, so this fits in my dell 8940 slot as a just perfect just fit .. however, i am always wary of using very large disks to store TB of files and lose if it breaks ,, 4TB is just about the max size i will use .. so far with 1.5TB moved on it and working for the last 2 weeks .plus bought this on BB sale. and then got a lower price next day when it went on sale again with BB price match .. for a great deal from BestBuy

New drive with good write/read speed for the HDD.
A perfect replacement for my old drive, using it with the external adapter. It is sad that a bigger drive was not in the store at that moment.

I'm very happy with the product and used it with another WD Red Plus 4TB hard drive in my NAS as a RAID in case if one drive fails, I can just put another one in and what is on my other WD drive will replicate on the new one. It's the best way to save all my family pictures and other important files.

These are awesome drives. Solid performance, great reliability so far (been almost 2 years with no issues on all three that I bought), and good value (if you can get them on sale). I just use them in my PC, and they're surprisingly quiet. I highly recommend doing regular backups regardless of how good a drive seems on paper. But other than that I highly recommend these drives.

The WD Red Plus series hard drives for NAS are nice and reliable. I noticed that they are not as loud as the Seagate IronWolf hard drives. The price is good as well.
