The Weber Lumin Electric Grill is a multi-use alternative to the traditional gas/charcoal grill that has been available for quite some time. With increased portability, versibility, and a promise to “achieve high-quality searing” with “smoke infusion”, does it live up to the promise? Let’s find out!
In The Box:
Grill
Porcelain-enameled, cast-iron cooking grates
6-foot grounded cord
Quick Start Guide
Setup:
The setup process is very simple and includes removing all of the packaging, installing the grates into the grill, and finding a nearby outlet in a safe location. This will likely require the use of an extension cord as the 6 foot cord is very short. There is also a grip tray that can be lined with a foil liner for easy disposal after each use.
Once set up, the grill has several modes one can choose from depending on what you are cooking/heating during a given cooking session. This grill can sear, smoke, steam or boil with various cooking settings. I used it mainly for searing/grilling with medium to high heat.
Usage:
Given I was going to be grilling/searing, it is recommended to use the highest heat mode but this will vary depending on ambient conditions. When I tested this, it was in the mid to upper 40’s which required just a couple extra minutes of pre-heat time but nothing major. The grill was up to nearly 600 degrees in less than 15 minutes.
It’s recommended not to open/close the lid a bunch of times during cooking to minimize heat loss. Cooking a standard size burger around 1/3lb takes about 6-8 minutes total depending on temperature and how you like your burger cooked. Flipping around the 4-5 minute mark seemed about right for my liking. The sear marks are extremely good and one honestly would be hard pressed to tell what was used to cook them. After opening the lid to place the burgers on, temps held around 425 degrees until flipping them which then dropped closer to 375-400 degrees for the reminder of the cooking time. Once the burgers were taken off, they looked extremely nice and tasted amazing. It all comes down to nailing the cook time per how you prefer your “doneness”. After using it once or twice, this should be very easy to gauge.
Overall, the Weber Lumin grill has been a pleasure to use with easy setup, cooking, and cleanup. If you’re looking to take your grill to tailgates or other activities the Lumin is definitely the way to go for ease of use vs conventional grills. Because this grill only consumes just under 1,600 watts, it can be powered by many vehicles both gas and electric.
