Great prod but Wemo cloud functionality is spotty

Had a rough start with these due to some bad firmware as well as a Belkin server outage in December of 2020. Everything seems ok for now, but I don't have as much trust in Wemo/Belkin as I used to. Older models did not depend on cloud infrastructure and Wemo account to work properly. Basically, Wemo customers are at Belkin's whim when it comes to them bricking this device when they decide it does not make financial sense to keep cloud servers running.

Wemo plugs lose connectivity to wi-fi. When you open the app, it tells you that the plugs are "not detectable" or "no response" and will not work at times with alexa or  homepod. Worst purchase decision I have made. I would not recommend this product.

I had issues with 1 of the 3 units immediately. It would not connect to WiFi. Took 5 or more resets to get the plug to connect. That unit will no longer connect to WiFi. The other 2 units lose connection within 24 hours with the WiFi and need to be power cycled to connect again. I am so very so disappointed.

Could not get it to connect to apple webkit or even the Wemo app. Had an 3+ year old wemo that works fine. This thing, however, does not work. Lots of people online complained about it... little did I know. I will be sticking with TP Link/Kasa, which has its issues but at least I can set it up.

    Decent Smart Plug

Let's be real for a second. Smart plugs, while useful, don't have the wow factor many other electronic devices posess. They are generally simple devices that you, well - plug things into. Designed to make life a bit easier by assistig in home automation. Depending on what you plug into them, how many devices you have and use, and how deep into the world of home automation you are - it can be a bit underwhelming, or rather exciting. Often the feature set of smart plugs leaves a bit to be desired. How does the Wemo Smart Plug fit into this equation? In large part, that's up to you. You could use these plugs in the most basic way which would be to simply turn an item, such as a lamp, off and on. But why? Especially when Wemo provides features such as timers and schedules to really kick your home automation up a notch. First let's talk about the design. These plugs are standard white, brick-shaped devices with a manual push button in case you need to power on or off a device in case of internet or WiFi outage. There is a very small status light to one side which is used primarily during setup to indicate when the device is ready for pairing. The plug is lightweight for its size, but does not feel cheaply made. It has a solid feel in the hand. In the box you will find the plugs and your standard quick setup guide. You will need the Wemo app to setup your smart plugs so be sure to download this prior to beginning. Apps are available for both iOS and Android. Also of note, make sure whatever device you are using to setup the smart plugs is connected to the 2.4GHz WiFi band, NOT the 5GHz band. Installation will fail if you aren't connected to WiFi, or are connected to the wrong band. Once you have the app downloaded (and created a Wemo account) and are connected to the 2.4GHz WiFi, you are ready to begin setup. Plug the smart plug into your selected outlet, and follow the prompts in the app. Setting up the smart plugs is rather straight forward, but I did have one issue. It's really something of a design flaw. On the smart plug there is a QR code that you will need to scan in the app. This QR code is on the side of the device. So I found myself trying to place my phone near the wall (outlet) to scan the code. Since the device has to be powered on when you scan the QR code, it really isn't an option to scan this before plugging it in. However, in the packaging there is a pull out sleeve with the QR codes for each smart plug that you can scan, instead of the one on the plug itself. I did not see these until after I setup my smart plugs. So look for that sleeve. It will make setup easier. Wemo, make these more prominent please! Beyond that little hiccup, setup was a breeze. Once you have your devices setup, Wemo connects with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and IFTTT. Connecting with each of these services was straightforward and as easy as following the in app prompts. You're all setup, well at least for basic use. These are the steps required to add your device and integrate it into your home automation system. However, through the app, Wemo provides a few more advanced options such as timer rules, schedules, auto-off timers, and away-mode. Each of these features are easy to setup and all work as intended. So why not give your automation a boost? The app provides control for other Wemo devices such as motion sensing, dimmers, alerts, and usage. Other helpful information such as tutorials, articles, and community forum can be found in the Support and Feedback section. Firmware updates may also be performed within the app. Overall, I am pleased with the design, ease of setup, feature set, and practical application of the Wemo Smart Plug. While there isn't anything overly special about these smart plugs, they are far from the worst devices I have used. I'm confident enough in them to recommend to friends or family members looking for decent smart plugs that are also cost-effective.

      Hi,

The Wemo WiFi Smart Plugs should work longer than described. You can try to use a different mobile device with the latest version of the Wemo app to see if the devices are working properly. For further assistance, you may reach out to us at WemoCares@belkin.com and share more details with the link to this review for our reference.
