Whisper of the Heart has been my favorite Ghibli/Miyazaki movie since it was released back in 1995. I saw it first as a fansub and bought every version released since then and this Bluray version is a nice addition to my collection. There is not much difference from the 2009 Bluray release -- new case artwork, but same voice cast. The video transfer is clean and clear and a pleasure to watch, and the score is faithfully captured and reproduced on the Bluray medium. As for the vocals... let me start by saying that I ALWAYS prefer to watch Anime in the original Japanese with subtitles. That being said, I found the English dubs on this version to be surprisingly good! Usually I find English dubs cringe-worthy and awkward to the point where the immersion is constantly broken, but here the English voice cast (mostly) does a good job. I found Harold Gould to be absolutely SUPERB as Seiji's grandfather, and Cary Elwes did a similarly splendid job as the Baron. I was also quite pleased by Jean Smart as Shizuku's mom. The performances by Ashley Tisdale and Martin Spanjers as the friends of Shizuku were more than adequate, though I found Courtney Thorne-Smith's portrayal of Shizuku's sister to be hit-and-miss. My biggest disappointment was with the voices for the two leading characters, Shizuku and Seiji (Brittany Snow and David Gallagher). While their performances are far from bad, I didn't feel as connected to the characters as I would like and it felt as if something was just "off". There were definitely good times where it felt right and natural, but overall Id say theirs was the weakest link (perhaps because such a large portion of the dialog does belong to them, though?) Overall, a very pleasant experience in English and an absolutely stellar one in Japanese -- I love this movie!!

Looking at Studio Ghibli's track record, this movie holds a spot as one of my all time favorites. If you love a good slice of life with a bit of fantasy mixed in, I highly recommend this movie.

I remember seeing this anime 5 years ago and it still holds up today. I really liked its simple story. Give a chance it isn't for everyone but it is a great anime.

While not directed by Hayao Miyazaki, he did produce it, reportedly developing the story and contributing storyboards for the film. I love Ghibli films, but some are better paced than others. By the mid-way point I found myself drifting off and decided to take a break. I am glad I did. Later in the evening I picked up where I had left off and I found that the second half was much better. We needed the first half to get there, but it was the slower part of the story. Essentially, this is a human story about young love and indecisiveness. A young girl finds love and struggles with her own identity and wanting to establish her path in life. She is creative and loves to read, which causes her to realize she may be a good writer. With some encouragement, she develops her first work. As a young person, she wants to make some brass decisions, and the adults try to persuade her to be more rational. The use of John Denver's TAKE ME HOME COUNTRY ROADS was a bit of a surprise. I actually switched audio tracks to listen to the original Japanese...well, the track on the disc, which I am not entirely sure is the original dub. Overall, this is an enjoyable film, but one that has a simple story and doesn't reach the pinnacle of Studio Ghibli films. Definitely worth a watch, but probably not one you have to own unless you are a completist of Ghibli films.

A Young Girl Finds Her Voice

This story is about a young girl who doesn't know quite what she wants from life and considers not going to university. She follows a cat to an antique shop and becomes friends with the owner. Between the shop owner and his grandson she learns what she is really passionate about and learns that education doesn't have to be boring. Like all of Hayao Miyasaki's films the artwork is so wonderful and vibrant. All the cels of the cartoon are all hand painted masterfully. It amazes me how awesome the artwork is and reminds me sometimes of impressionist painters of old. I highly recommend this movie.

Whisper of the Heart is one of my favorite Ghibli movies, Not a popular one compared to their others but a beautiful story that I watched when I was a kid. Reminded me of the Dewey Decimal system i used when i was a kid, getting to see who else checked out my book. My only issue with with Best Buy not having these in the stores like the previous ones. I like to make sure the one I'm getting doesnt have any dents, as others have had, but luckily this one was good.

So, this is classic Studio Ghibli fair. If you know what that means, 'nuff said. If you're new to their work, try a google search first in another tab to be brought up to date on one of the best animation studios of the last forty years. My only note and selling point for this movie that I feel like adding beyond that is that it is highly implied by this movie that the main character girl goes on to be the writer for the subsequent and equally high quality movie, The Cat Returns. You ought to watch both back to back for the full effect.

Touching Story about Being True to Oneself

The main character is a loveable little girl who has nothing to challenge her. She is feeling like she is the same boring child. A chance meeting with a cat brings her to a boy who she initially dislikes, but learns to appreciate, and who in return challenges her to be a better person and to set goals and dreams for herself. This endearing story struck a chord with me especially since I could relate to the character. It was cute and really family friendly. It is also great conversation material to have with kids or friends or family members - about what kind of person you want to be and what kind of dreams you have for yourself. I recommend this film to anyone!
