Well this is my second replacement receiver and I figured I would wait a bit before I would give my review on it. The first issue I had with the first receiver was flickering whenever I would turn on the Bluray player which was a samsung bdh6500 excellent bluray player by the way. Anyways i thought it was the bluray player or perhaps the HDMI cable but after i switched the cables around and switched the source input from hdmi 1 to hdmi 5 ect the receiver continued to have the flickering issue with the picture on the tv. I then swapped my bluray player with another one and it did the same flickering problem so I went to best buy and got a replacement. The second seems to be working great so far. Things I like about this receiver is that you can have your bluray player or cable / satellite receiver on and watch it through the tv as well as hear it while the receiver is off but on standby which is still considered off. That setting has to be turned on manually so that you can use that feature. My last yamaha receiver which was a RX-V663 didn't have this feature and I had to have it on at all times in order to watch tv. This is a great feature because my wife doesn't always like to hear my klipsch speakers and sub woofers shaking everything in the house with this receiver it's nice to have the receiver off and be able to watch your programs on tv at night with out waking up the kids with the receiver. Setting up my 7 Klipsch Quintet 5.0 speakers and 2 klipsch sw450 sub woofers with the YPAO microphone was a bit tricky as it took me about 5 times to get the settings right. You must really have your home extremely quiet during this process otherwise you will get an error code w3 every time. The microphone has to be placed where you sit and at the height of your head so that it can calibrate the speakers to that listening height and distance. Once that is set up you will be able to hear the center channel and all the other speakers alot louder and overall balanced in sound with out the subs being too boomy. Just remember to set your sub woofers gain/volume control to 1/2 and your frequency to full range and it will calibrate perfectly! The receiver has been able to decodes every format and movie I can think of which is excellent. My only issue with one of the bluray movies i rented which is "The Hobbit battle of the 5 army's" seems to decode all the background sounds except the main voices of some of the characters which was very annoying but could just be a bad copy because all my other movies decode excellent. Setting up wifi was extremely easy and i was able to set up pandora for internet radio listening. Once i loged in to my pandora account all i had to do on the receiver was press the Net button and pandora would start immediately. The receiver did need a firmware update so when it was done I did have to re log in to pandora but Overall I would highly recommend this receiver if you want premium sound with excellent features this rx-a740 is the way to go.

The unit itself was recommended by the local Magnolia professional at my BB. I was in the market for a dual zone, Bluetooth and WiFi capable receiver that could really deliver crisp clear notes through my various zones and also be somewhat easy to use, for the wife obviously...Nonetheless this unit captured all of the above and even more options which I am using daily. It is a fantastic receiver for the price if you're not looking to completely break the bank but yet want quality and are not satisfied with the RTR complete junk usually offered.

We replaced our old receiver with the Yamaha unit. The Yamaha is so easy to use and adjusts very easily to every situation in my home. All of the controls are on the front, not behind a panel or door, and they are so easy to adjust. The control buttons are self explanatory, where I do not have to refer to the owners manual. So easy!!! The sound from my speakers which is controlled through the Yamaha receiver is very good! Though you have to keep in mind that sound is very perspective and personal and varies according to the speakers.

Works as well or better than expected. The mobile App in our case the Kindle Fire makes it wonderfully functional without needing to turn on the TV. Can operate the 2 zones separately which is really nice. Still experimenting with sound balance manually since I have 5 channel surround and YPAO doesn't seem to work with only 5. Will call Yamaha soon for help, but it's sure nice to have all the choices for sound sources. Music in our house now all day long. Great item and the WiFi feature works flawlessly.

I replaced a top of the line Sony with this receiver. I needed more HDMI inputs and 4K capability. It does everything it promised and has a very easy on screen set-up. I also needed a receiver that would connect to my Bluetooth Bose headphones, and it does. The only negative thing I would say about it, is the manual, its massive and I still haven't read it all, once I do I'm sure I will find even more features I'm not aware of.

Has all the power & bass I need. It's pushing a pair of Definitive Tech. speaker towers with built in subs, a pair of Polk rears, & an Olympic center as well as 2 pair Yamaha outdoor speakers. Sounds awesome. Runs hot, even when off (??!!). I'm using Speaker Craft 4 zone system (should not have to buy separately, but you do)

I couldn't be more pleased with my Yamaha. It replaced an older competitor (Denon) which had great sound but quirky controls. The Yamaha set up was very easy and the controls seem intuitive. If this lasts over 10 years like my previous unit, I will be a happy camper. So far so good, at least for two months.

Bought this Yamaha as an upgrade from the cheaper Yamaha because we move into a house that has speakers throughout. Was easy to install and puts out great sound. It's awesome to play music throughout the house w/o having to blair it in the TV room.

This is our first home theater receiver and we aren't disappointed. It works great. The wireless and bluetooth features work well. Controlling it with the remote, and with our phones (apple and Android) is really cool.
Sound output is fantastic, but anything would be considered better than the lame tv speakers we had before. We are using it with Definitive Technology speakers in our living room and the sound is fantastic. We also have a Samsung 60" LED tv. My only complaint is how the TV changes settings on the receiver- I think I just need to mess with some more settings. We have everything running through the receiver, and not the TV. Bottom line, an excellent value.

I purchased this receiver 2 months ago to replace a 10 year old JVC.
I couldn't be happier.
Current setup is 5.1 which I use for movies/TV and switch to 2 channel for music. I have a turntable, cd player, and tape deck connected via analog switcher and all sound great.
For A/V, I have a Blu-ray and VHS player connected along with my TV audio out as well.
V.Tuner works great for listening to radio stations throughout the world and I can easily play music from my laptop over the wifi connection.
I'm a very happy customer........

For my purposes I needed to download the complete manual on line. I am usually pretty good with electronics as most have a similar pattern of one setting or another. This unit was a little more challenging due to the set up and a myriad of sound options with the on screen menu. so after several hours setting up the sound and picture and ARC and Wi Fi I settled on settings that worked and I mostly leave it alone In fact there is a lock for system setting so someone doesn't mess with it. I live alone so not a worry although someone else wanting to watch a show on my new 4K Panasonic TV would be in for a rude awakening trying to figure it out. As for the unit itself the sound is great and the up-scaled video looks amazing so although not entirely intuitive, once set up it works fine

I have replaced this with my old Onkyo receiver. Onkyo was good till i hook this beast. What a difference. Airplay, Inbuilt wifi, iOS app to control the receiver, sufficient HDMI connections, what else is required. Really love the receiver. Compared with SC-81 from Pioneer, but gone with this due to the fact Pioneer does not have wifi with its $1000 price tag,

The Yamaha Android app works very well with this unit and is fun to use! I also like the ability to stream Pandora and SiriusXM via the Ethernet connection. The Android interface between the Spotify app and the receiver works very well also. The GUI menu is easy to navigate via both the app on a tablet and on-screen. My only complaint is the time the video processor takes to stabilize when changing input selections. Initially, did not work with a Panasonic blu ray. Turning off the "Deep Color Output" on the player solved the issue.

Matching this with a B&W 7.1 speaker system but haven't completed the set yet to get the full potential. Like what I hear so far. Lots of great features, good sound, but entry level power.
