When I first played Yooka-Laylee on PS4, I got bored after 50 minutes. After a friend suggested I get Impossible Lair, I was very skeptical about it at first, but I am glad I was wrong for being so doubtful of this. Solid 60 frames per second, fluid controls that are easy to understand and master, and just the right amount of moves to keep things nice and fresh while not being overwhelming. Oh, and the ambient, art and music is the stuff of dreams. Mind you, the game is very tough! It sometimes tests my patience, but it doesn't feel as infuriating when you KNOW your death was caused by a miscalculation, an off-timed jump, or poor judgment, instead of bad controls or input lag. Pros: Beautiful graphics, amazing music, versatility in each and every level, tough, but solvable challenges in a challenging game, Tonics to enhance your playing experience, smooth controls, quirky and witty dialogue, and plenty to do in both the 2D levels, and the 3D overworld. You won't have time to be bored in this game. Cons: VERY long initial loading time, and some levels can take a bit to load as well. On a personal level, I also find the super limited jump on the overworld to be aggravating.

The fact that this title was put into the hands of the same veterans who pioneered the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy definitely shines through the quality of the design. Pros: Lot of collectibles for each level with lots of challenges because these are not just handed to you. Lots of puzzle-solving on the overworld map which is unique for the genre. Gameplay draws a lot of inspiration from DK: Tropical Freeze (which definitely isn't a bad thing). Cons: Difficulty curve could have been less or at least had lower difficulty options. More personality and enemy variety would have helped. Overall though, it's an amazing game and is well worth your cash. Well-played, Playtonic!

This game, developed by the team at Playtonic, is excellent! Many of the development team members were at Rare back when the Donkey Kong Country games were made on the Super NES, and it shows. The visuals are a real treat, and they run at a smooth 60 FPS with only the very occasional wobble! The controls are also tight and predictable, and the level design (from what I've played, haven't beaten the game yet) seems pretty good, too. I'm also quite fond of the 3d-style overworld where you find the levels. Once you find levels, you can warp to them at any time by bringing up the map to save yourself traversal time, too. It must be said that the Impossible Lair is really quite a challenge! A recent update did make it somewhat more approachable, but be forewarned that it definitely has teeth (made an attempt, it didn't go well...) Highly recommended, especially considering it's not terribly expensive!

If you enjoy platform games or are a fan of Dankey Kang you’re in for a treat. All the levels are a challenge and the replay ability and collection aspect are great. Besides the actual levels, the overworld map is practically a game in itself. Super smart level design and different tonics add a great mechanic to this game. The word Impossible is in the title and for good reason. The last level, which is accessible as soon as you start the game is practically impossible. You’ll definitely earn props amongst your platforming pals if you manage to tackle the final stage and boss. Great graphics and an even better soundtrack from start to finish.

Controls well, 60fps with very few dips, great music, and fun levels. I love that I can go experience the old days of classic RARE platformers from the 90's by playing games like this. While this title in my opinion is a strong, fun and challenging platformer with a fresh take on navigating an overworld, I feel its lack of 2 player co-op is a missed opportunity which sadly doesn't surpass Donkey Kong Country V (Tropical Freeze) as the superior game.

Lovely graphics, tight controls, fun collectables, and a charming overworld packed with humorous characters and secrets. You get 20 levels that each have one bee (think of a Moon from Super Mario Odyssey), and five special coins (just like the KONG letters in the Donkey Kong Country series). Each level has an alternate form that you must unlock via manipulation of the overworld environment. That leaves 40 levels combined along with the "Impossible Lair". The Impossible Lair is a mega-level with no check-points. The gimmick is that every bee you rescue will act as a shield. So if you have 20 bees then you can take 20 hits. This level is as unpleasant as you'd expect a villain's impossible lair to be, and leaves an overall great game feeling sour towards the end.

This is a fun game that reminds me of donkey Kong country. There is a variety of enemy types to pounce and lots of things to collect as you run through the levels. The hub world is fun with puzzles that help mix up the variety. The controls for the game work well and movement is fluid and fun. Lots of levels to complete with A and B sides.

After a lukewarm reception of the first Yooka Laylee game, I was interested to see what Playtonic would do with the next game in the series. The result was a 2D platformer reminiscent of the classic Donkey Kong Country games. The graphics and music are top notch, and there's a good bit of humor in the game's dialogue. The standard stages are 2D side scrolling affairs, all connected via a top down overworld filled with puzzles and secrets. The levels are well designed for the most part, and filled with alternate paths and hidden areas. You can also unlock modifiers for the game, such as adding more checkpoints to a level, or increasing swimming speed, at the cost of quills, the game's currency. It's all fun and fairly challenging. ...at least until you take on the titular "Impossible Lair". The difficulty spike between the normal levels and the final level is incredibly high, even with the extra shielding you earn throughout the rest of the game. Did I mention the stage will take nearly twenty-five minutes to complete and there are no checkpoints? There's a fine line between challenging and frustrating, and the Impossible Lair firmly places itself on the "frustrating" side. It's incredibly disappointing that the Impossible Lair is, well, impossible for most people who will pick up this game, especially since the rest of the game is so well balanced with its difficulty. Gamers who enjoy spending hours trying to conquer super tough games such as Super Meatboy or Celeste will probably like attempting to run through the Impossible Lair, but anyone else will be better off with the myriad of other side scrollers on the platform, such as Nintendo's own Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.

Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of the first game. It was too empty and did wrong what it’s spiritual predecessor, Banjo-Kazooie, did wrong. Those flaws are not in this game. Plaything looked at the fine work of Retro Studios with Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze and said “yeah well watch the original team have a go at it”. The music is superb. The level design is approachable for all ages and completionists will get challenged. A fantastic sequel.

good game. the only problem i have is that it can be hard at times and the collectables can be hard to get as well. at least there is no life system so you can die a unlimited amount of times, at some points in the game i thought there could have been more checkpoints in the game. much better than the first game which i thought was just average even though i am a fan of banjo kazoee type games.

A challenging retro platformer with excellent graphics, sound, and music! I actually loved the first Yooka-Laylee because it copied the same style as Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64 and I appreciated that. That one did need some polish which would have helped it, though. This game, however, has that polish and is filled with so many fine details! I'm amazed and I can tell they put a lot of love and work into it. It's also FILLED with secrets and hidden items, of which many are VERY hard to find. It's an excellent, challenging game, and I highly recommend it!

This game is a cute and fun platforming addition to your Switch collection! Very reminiscent of the newer Donkey Kong games in art and playstyle and I loved that about this game. This is a good game for all levels of platform gamers and I found a little challenge in some of the levels which made it more fun that just easily one-shotting each level. The ability to collect and use potions to change the look of the levels adds a fun element to each run-through of a level as well.

Whether you enjoyed their first effort or not, Playtonic has successfully hearkened back to their DKC roots on SNES with this game. 20 levels (each level having two versions to play through) plus the Impossible Lair. Although the DKC Returns games exist, it's nice to have some of the original developers back at the helm of a new game.

If you have any hesitations because of the original Yooka-Laylee, put them to rest. The follow up changes the play style from a 3D to a 2D platformer along with a 3D overworld to explore. With one less dimension in the core gameplay, you could compare this to games like Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze or New Super Mario Bros U. Those games are heavy hitters and this game keeps up easily. This game introduces its own flare that lets it stand on its own two legs. If you’re a fan of platformers, either 2D or 3D, this will be right up your alley.
