Never played a Ys game so decided to try this one since Persona 5 was just so amazing. This game is not disappointing me at all. (Well maybe a little bit of grammar issues.) This game reminds me so much of Skies of Arcadia, you build a village on the shipwrecked island and it grows as you save more people. As well as elements from the anime “Your Name.” I am very happy to have blind bought this and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great fast paced game, with a great story, characters and music.

The game is certainly a sequel in gameplay to Memory of Celceta adding more gameplay elements and refining the combat as well as adding new things to do in the game (the previous title on PS Vita, a really fun game). However, what drags the game down quite a bit is the translation...I can't speak Japanese but I can tell you even with that this game has a mid 90's translation quality. The game isn't fully voiced before I dive into this problem, Adol (the main character) will only say small quips at most and as for the rest of the dialog, it's kinda random what is and isn't spoken. It's not the English voice work that's a problem which is passable depending on what character is talking. But there's a lot of weird dialog both written or spoken. Adol when casting his fishing line will say "I wonder what I caught", which had me stumped pretty hard as we haven't even started. That kinda thing carries on, you're asked choices and some responses feel flat or ambiguous and it's really off putting. I don't recall that being the case in Memory of Celceta. So, it's bad in this regard but it's passable, it's not Breath of Fire 2 levels of awful with it's translation. The translation being passable doesn't really effect the game at large as it's ...pretty packed with cliches. Down to walking in on a girl while she's nude and cleaning herself up, followed by, you guessed it, a slap to the face. Everyone is fairly up beat despite the situation and the captain can't seem to order the people around, instead he's basically politely asking. I'm not super far but the game is hinting at some secret plot of interest but, I'm not sure how big it'll be given the run of cliches but it'll probably be enough to carry the characters along. Which, seem to be at least given an arc. The game itself looks pretty good, it's not Final Fantasy 15 levels of over-polish but the game also runs vastly better than FF15 at 60fps. Well, most of the time. The game seems to have trouble keeping it to that level during some parts of the game but it's nice to see a game that focuses on framerate when it's an action title. But it looks pretty good, anime themed and keeps level detail up nicely. I prefer the style as it'll look better than the games trying to look 'real' years from now. Loading is also fast for once. You wont be sat around for 10-60 seconds waiting for a map to load, fade out, fade in. Done. Good, more games should be trying to do this. Alright can't talk about a Ys game apparently without mentioning the music or you'll be mauled by the fans I hear, the music is great. High energy rock-tunes that gets you hyped for sprinting around the map and carving up monsters. Right, should talk a bit more about what the game is, it's an action RPG with lots to do. You've been shipwrecked and your goal is to explore the map while gathering supplies for your village of survivors. You'll have to get bits to upgrade your base, items and help with your relationship with the towns members as they'll help you break through obstacles as you progress, opening more points of the map. This sounds complicated, well, it's not. You gather items from combat or little natural points that you ...swing your sword at. Characters will even voice out what they see or when you should use a character vs an enemy. Combat then, combat is fully action in the field. You bring 3 party members with you who'll actively attack and you can switch to them with a push of a button. This is helpful since some enemies are weak to certain characters, characters with you will call it out "Adol it's up to you here!" but really for the most part, even on hard it doesn't seem to be mandatory. Yes enemies go down faster and will drop more stuff but overall it's not so big an issue. The combat is really fun, it's got a fast pace to it and a nice impact. Character switching is instant and it's really satisfying when you get good at it. Dodging or quick guarding at the very last second triggers a "flash" state where everything except you slows down and you can go to town on an enemy. You get special moves that you can work into combos and your AI will thankfully use these moves as well. Combat is all on the field, no random encounters or screen transitions. Really nice: The game lets you remap EVERY button you want. Why all games don't do this? I don't know. But it's great to have. The day one edition sports a music disc with select tracks and a manual sized art book in full color. Why don't more games do this? ...I, don't, know. You think it'd be better than carving off DLC for BS reasons. It's a worth while game to get into, up beat, fast snappy combat that isn't overly complicated and charming characters that are let down by janky translation. The publisher has since said they will be patching the game's translation which is good news but as of this reviews writing it's not out yet.

This is a solid JRPG. I enjoyed this more than FFXV and Persona 5. Pacing and story development are excellent, something I felt was lacking in the previously mentioned games. Graphics are good but not great. only 20% voice acted. Multiple endings, which I hate, but I got the true ending without a guide so...good! Game most like this one, the tales series. Game I liked more Nier Automata.

Don't let the relatively simple graphics fool you (this game was originally developed for Vita) - this is a great game for anyone who is a fan of fast-paced action RPG's. The combat, especially learning when to switch between the characters at the press of a button, remains fast and exciting. The story is engaging (although it starts a bit slowly), and the remote island setting is surprisingly large and diverse. It's fun to keep exploring, and over time the island nearly becomes a character unto itself, which helps to set the game apart from other RPG's. The game also has a fantastic soundtrack which perfectly fits the on-screen action. Highly recommended!

The Ys series has appeared on almost every console since it debuted, both new and older games. There isn't much I can say that hasn't already praised this game. It's great. It continues the adventure of Adol as he always finds himself swept up on some island to solve mysteries and defeat monsters. This game is great for familiar fans and new comers. It's very approachable without having have played previous games, though I've played most of them and felt like this could stand alone even though there is continuity with each game. It has a great visuals and a great battle system.

Has a good soundtrack, story, and good character background along with a good battle mechanic. If you liked the previous Y’s games then you’ll definitely love this one.

The Ys series has been around for roughly 30 years now but it still manages to get great games, and this game is no exception. For those wondering if you need to play past games to experience this one, do not worry as each game is self contained, save for a few subtle references veteran fans will understand. You are Adol Christin who is stranded on an island along with other castaways and must work together to find a way off. With great gameplay, story, music, and worldbuilding, this game is a must play.

This game will probably go under the radar by most. If you are a fan of JRPG I would highly recommend. The game play is highly addictive and has an interesting story to go along with. If you are into action RPG I would say this is a must.

just gotta say this serie is awesome sweet story awesome gameplay interesting character mechanics are pretty awesome story just hope we get to see more of this ys serie going to ps4 worth getting if u like action rpg with good story

If you like YS7 and YS4 merories of Celceta. You'll love YS8. It retain the same gameplay with better upgrade and story. It's a action rpg. It feels more like zelda then final fantasy. Which I also love zelda.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana is an Action JRPG developed by Nihon Falcom and published by NIS America. You star as Adol Christen, the protagonist of nearly all Ys games, who is shipwrecked on a cursed island after his ship is attacked by a giant squid-like creature. In an effort to escape, you must find other survivors who will band together to build up your camp, Shipwreck Village, into a flourishing town of survivors. The more survivors you find, the more resources open up in your town, and the further you can progress through the island. The action is fast, the music is reminiscent of Power Metal, and the characters are endearing. The only downside is that the graphics look like upscaled GameCube graphics. Considering as this is Falcom's first 3D Ys game, I'll give that a pass. And they're not bad, just not great. No framerate drops or screen tearing. Overall, I'd give the game a 4.5/5, but Best Buy doesn't allow you to rate with half star increments.

Throughout its 30 year history, the Ys series has been the premier franchise for action RPG fans in the know. With each new entry Falcom pays homage to the history of the action RPG genre, while continuing to modernize. Ys VIII continues that tradition, and manages to feel just the right combination of classic and fresh. The combat is snappy and quick. The characters are endearing. The newest addition to the series, managing your castaway village, is satisfying and provides an extra motivation to get out into the wild to explore and collect. Ys VIII is a meatier entry than previous Ys titles, clocking in at several times the shorter length that past entries were known for. There's alot to see and do. Gamers who prize graphics over all else may be alittle disappointed with this title, as it is an upscaled Vita game at its core, however, the overall visual style is a delight. Colors are bright and vibrant. Monster designs are unique. And the framerate is buttery smooth . And goodness is that one heck of a good soundtrack!

This is an action RPG that has fast based and thrilling combat, and a decent story that will keep you engaged.

I bought this for my dad for Christmas and he was super-thrilled. He loves role-playing games and was eyeing this one for a while now. Somehow I was the first one to play. So far, the gameplay is very good and so are the graphics (if not a little cartoony). Later on, the combat may get tough as there are lots of buttons. I read some reviews saying that people have 60 or 70 hours invested before they finish. Wish I had that much time to play games.

If you were a fan of the original series then this is a good game. I would have liked to see a little more polish on the gfx to at least bring it up to today's standards but the game play is in tact and the story is good. The only down side is the voice acting is poor.

YS 8 is great, and for the first time it actually has what I feel like is a really good fleshed out story. Dana is one of best characters I have ever seen in any sort of media. She is truly wonderful and the combat is just as fun with many type of action maneuvers you can use to give you the edge in battle. So come and play as our favorite Swordsman Adol and crush through these monsters and find out what adventures await our dear Adol. I consider YS 8 to be the best entry in the entire YS series.

Never having played a Ys game, I wasn't sure if this game would satisfy my arpg needs. Let me assure you...This game is absolutely brilliant! The battles are great for fans of the action rpg genre.

I bought this for my brother because he loves RPG games and he is certainly enjoying this game. I would definitely recommend this game to any RPGS gamers out there!

If you’re looking for a game with a great story and fast action, look no further. Combat is simple, but let’s you rotate between the three people in your party to deal damage depending on the enemy type. So it can get frantic having to switch,attack,and dodge/block. I’m not too far into the game yet but the story has been good and it seems like it will take an easy 70-80hrs just to do the main quests.
