    Synopsis

    Road House
Love, treachery, and broken furniture are the hallmarks of this rollicking action drama. Dalton (Patrick Swayze) has a Ph.D., but rather than make a living teaching Socrates at some university, he's opted to become a top-drawer "cooler" -- an expert barroom bouncer who can break up fights without getting himself killed in the process. Dalton is hired to keep the peace at the Double Duce, a rough-and-tumble honky tonk in Jasper, Missouri, where beer-soaked free-for-alls are a nightly event. Dalton is hurt on his first night on the job, and he is patched up by "Doc" Clay (Kelly Lynch), a beautiful woman working as the town's physician. Dalton and Doc immediately hit it off, but Dalton learns that another man, Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara), already has his eye on her. Wesley is a man used to getting his way; he's an extortionist and crime boss who has nearly everyone in Jasper under his thumb, and he sets out to teach Dalton a lesson, while Dalton is determined to clean up the town like he breaks up brawls at the Double Duce. Sam Elliott plays Dalton's mentor Wade, and Red West, a one-time member of Elvis Presley's "Memphis Mafia," appears as Webster; Canadian blues-rock guitarist Jeff Healey leads the Double Duce house band. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Roadhouse was another one of the films that for some reason I was curious to see again (I first saw in my teens) in order to get a glimpse and understanding in what my late adoptive mother enjoyed and how it may have indirectly influenced my own interests (due to the fact that Patrick Swayze was one of my late adoptive mother’s favorite actors). Anyhow Roadhouse has Patrick Swayze starring as James Dalton a skilled bouncer who does not hesitate to stand up for himself or anybody who breaks the given rules at the bars that he works at. James Dalton is working at a popular New York City Bar when Frank Tilghman (Kevin Tighe) offers him a job working at a bar that he is opening in Missouri. James Dalton ends up running the new bar very well, but ends up having to deal with some of the locals in his new hometown wanting to seek revenge in a harsh way. What complicates matters is that falls in love with a woman named Dr. Elizabeth Clay who has a past history with influential businessman Brad Wesley. Brad Wesley is a harsh rival going after Dalton because of the threat that Dalton poses to how he has previously run things. Dalton finds out about Clay’s history because a popular musician named Cody (Jeff Healey) told him Clay’s past marriage. Dalton’s friend Wade Garrett (Sam Elliott) becomes concerned about the well-being of Dalton after a phone call due to Dalton dating an ex of a hostile enemy. Wade also questions the danger and risks of Dalton staying in his adopted Missouri hometown.

Listen, if you're looking at buying this movie you've seen it already and you know it's a great 80's action movie. The HD transfer is okay and the looks better then the dozens of DVDs of this movie. This particular package comes with the stylized artwork you see in the description picture, which when removed reveals the DVD photo for the release. The ONLY extra on this disc is the theatrical trailer. Which just happens to show I believe 4 dialogue lines not in the movie itself. Would have been nice if they had been restored and added to the feature. I prefer no commentary track then the Kevin Smith one on a previous release and that's what I got here, none. Maybe I'm spoiled with all the extras that are typically being added to classic 80's movies. Bottom Line: You know the movie is great and looks good on HD. I bought it just on that. If you have to have "extras" then stick with the copies you already have or watch it on TV as it is plays at least twice a year on various cable channels.

I will not lie, I only got this movie for the RiffTrax commentary, and because it was on sale. The only review anyone should need is that this is the movie Road House. Full of bars, bouncers, Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot, cheesy lines and just as cheesy action sequences. A wonderful example of an 80s action flick, with an 80s star, that even in the 80s only did decently well. If you're looking for anything thought-provoking, insightful, or Oscar-worthy, look somewhere else. If you're looking for something that matches the above description, and if that is your guilty pleasure, you will definitely buy this and either 1. Wonder why you did it later or 2. It will become your regular Saturday night thing.

This is by far the best version of Road House on home video. The new transfer is stunning and blows the previous Blu-ray out of the water. It also has a nice selection of new and vintage bonus features. Eagle-eyed viewers will want to go into their BD player's menu and change the HDMI output setting to RGB Enhanced (at least on Panasonic players) in order to correct for an authoring error that results in the movie playing the wrong colorspace. This change will correct the error and gives you a beautiful picture - just make sure to change it back when you're finished. Highly recommended.

The story is based on a top-notch bar bouncer (Patrick Swayze) who is compelled to call in his old mentor (Sam Elliot) for an especially tough project. Instead of just busting heads and throwing hoodlums out of the bar, these guys end up having to save the whole town! This is a B-movie all the way. In my opinion, it COULD be the greatest B-movie of all time. In short, despite being stupid it is also immensely entertaining. The plot is contrived. There are aspects of it that are way, way beyond being remotely believable. It seems the whole movie was inspired by pushing the envelope on the concept of the bar brawl.

A good example of how a great B-movie should be made.It entertains and gives the fans of it's genre straight up satisfaction without expecting the audience to take the whole story too seriously.Much like reading a good comic book. Here we have a good action comedy/drama with good action choreography and a simple plot of good versus evil and why each side does what it does. The acting is adequate and the cast chosen here was also good. The production values were all average but still, the overall flow of the movie just delivers for all those fans who understand B-action movies. This is the Swayze and Elliot I love.

All you have to do is set it back 100 years and give everyone six-shooters instead of karate and that's what you've got. Swayze is the good sheriff, or gunslinger, come to town to rid the place of the bad boss! Still, with a predictable plot the movie is full of good characterizations, action and actors you really like to watch. And who in their right mind ever gets tired of Sam Elliot? No special features to speak of and that's a minus but not a big enough one to effect my recommendation. After all, it's about the movie!

I loved this movie because my favorite actor was in it--Sam Elliott. It was an exciting movie involving crime, deceit, theft, bad guys and good guys. I like this movie every time I watch it! Recently found it on sale at Best Buy and will watch it any time I choose to. Movie is not for children. Too much violence and a lot of bad scenes. Will recommend to adults only.
