Not bad for the price
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It sets up really easy, with setting up the account online taking more time than anything else, just a few minutes. Nice being able to take it anywhere you have internet access. Some things I don't like though are finding channels. Many of them you have to pay for and you don't even know that until you go through the steps to install the channel. Installing some of the channels is also a problem. You have to go online to get access codes which is a pain when you are trying to set up several different channels. One other problem is that there are several times when it has stopped during a show I am watching on Amazon Prime (AP) to buffer the video. When I watch AP on the PS3 or the Wii I don't have this problem. It's not a consistent problem, never happens on my other systems. Still a great buy and I would buy it again.

Best Alternative
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently purchased my Roku, because I do not watch TV. I have a Netflix and Hulu account, and combined it is less than cable. So, I sought out an option that would allow me to take my viewing to the next level. The Roku 2 is fast, I no longer need to go to Redbox, and you can even personalize it. Some of the apps could be more updated, however, it continuously updates, and TV apps are still relatively new. Overall, this was the most cost effective and efficient way to turn my TV into a smart TV. I also hear these things have a hard time dying out. Lastly, what pushed me to the Roku 2 was the fact that the remote has a headphone option so you can listen and adjust the volume while someone else is sleeping or if you are vacuuming around the house and like to watch TV still. Best purchase of the year so far!

Works Great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this as a Christmas gift for my parents, who want to reduce or eliminate their cable. They are in their 70's and I was worried that it would be difficult for them to use but after a few sessions of "show & tell" they got the hang of it. We have a blu-ray player that we use to access Netflix, Amazon Prime etc. and the Roku is faster. Really like that it is small and easily portable. My parents spend winters in Florida and just took it with them. I do wish the interface on these devices was easier. I hate how you have to type everything in, it's so slow!

Great device, though lots of content not free
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This $60 gadget really does make your dumb TV smart, and it is easy to use. You need a computer for setup and wifi for viewing on the TV. There is some free content on each "channel," but much of the content is not free. However, if you already pay to stream Netflix on a PC, phone, or tablet, all Netflix content can be viewed on your TV via Roku at no additional charge. But with other providers, such as Amazon Prime, you often still have to pay by the show to view on Roku TV.

Great for "technology impaired" people
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this for my father in law. He does NOT like change...he still has a flip phone! However, he LOVES it! He watches Netflix every day with it. He used to watch everything in closed-caption because he couldn't hear the tv unless it was all the way up. Now, he plugs his headphones into the remote and he can hear it!! Great gift idea.

Highly Recommend
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My cable bill kept going up. I heard about the Roku box and thought I would give it a try. I purchased through the Roku box Hulu Plus and Netflix. They each cost $7.99 per month. This is a monthly savings of over $100.00 compared to cable. The box is easy to use and easy to navigate with the remote. I love it so much, I purchased a second one.

Streaming video device that Just Works
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the latest of several Rokus that I've bought in the last year in my quest to replace most of what I used to get from my cable service with streaming video. Part of my enthusiasm for the Roku is really just liking the concept of streaming video, but the device is also flexible and easy to set up and use. It gives me access to many different channels and more are getting added all the time. In contrast, I have a Blu-Ray player that said it had Netflix and other apps, but what it had out of the box is all it will ever have and the apps are very annoying to use. On the Roku, you choose the channels you want (free, pay, whatever) and they show up in one place as your channels, then it is simple to get to the channel you want to use. My cable provider also has a feature where you can get all of your subscribed channels via streaming video rather than directly over the cable, including digital channels for which I had needed to rent a cable box from them. I got rid of the cable box and the savings from that will pay for the Roku in short order. I lost on demand and start over features with the cable box, but I never used those, so not a big deal for me.

Bought this for my mom who had a non-smart TV
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wanted to get my mom into netflix but her TV didn't have native netflix support. She loves this and really likes the headphone jack on the remote so she can watch while her husband snores away in the chair next to her. Took a little bit to learn how to use and I had to do the initial setup for her but it's been perfect since then.

Q: QuestionDo you have to subscribe to the services like Netflix to use?I do not know about this but heard of it. I know it's a plug-in but don't you need subscriptions to streaming services to use it? Can you dvr programs with it?
Asked by Carrie.
- A:Answer Yes Netflix is only available with subscription. Further, only the primary email account can be used to access Netflix, so if you are one of the additional 5 profiles on a paid Netflix account you will not be able to browse to your profile to use the Netflix service on Roku2. I hope they fix this. Hope this was helpful, and not too confusing :-)

Q: QuestionIs it worth upgrading if my TV has no HDMI?I currently have a ROKU XDS. My TV is "enhanced definition", it has no HDMI connection. Right now, I'm using the component hookup for the Roku. It appears that, with the Roku 2, I would only have composite. I'm concerned about degradation of picture quality. However, on the XDS I can't get some that only work with the newer models. Has anyone else upgraded from the XDS to Roku 2? How is the picture quality?
Asked by Rich.
- A:Answer Thanks. I got the Roku 2 yesterday. The picture quality without HD is not the best. My XD/S has a better picture with a component hookup. However, the search on the Roku 2 is a great feature. From the home screen you can search a movie title, actor, TV show and the Roku will tell you which of the channels has that movie, or movies with that actor and the cost to get the movie from each of the channels. Another feature I didn't have before was "watch on Roku". I can look at photos or videos from my iPhone or iPad on the TV through the wireless connection. I was thinking of returning it due to the picture quality (the fault of the TV, not the Roku), but those features make it very attractive, and the picture is not terrible, just not as good as my other Roku. Thanks to those of you who responded to my question.

Q: QuestionWhat is considered high speed internet?I'm thinking of getting Ruko but wondering if my current Internet will work! Major concern with speed and distance from Internet to Ruko unit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Asked by Laura.
- A:Answer My wireless router is located in my living room and I've had no problem with quality anywhere in my house. I take the Roku off over the house. I had my internet speed tested and they said I need to come in and get an updated router to obtain actual "high speed". What I currently have works perfect. I think you should be fine too.

Q: Questioncan I use my Roku for future streaming services/add new apps as they become available?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer 99.9% of all electronics today are future proof. Technology evolves so quickly that it would be stifling for any company not to build their products in this manner. Roku is no different. They've designed it to be compatible with the evolution of technology. They do this by pushing their own updates periodically to your Roku device so it's ready for anything. Hope this helps.

Q: QuestionWhat about "local" TV programmingDoes this allow access to local tv stations? for news and weather etc.?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer Roku is exclusively an Internet-based solution. If you want over-the-air free local channels, you will need to get a digital antenna. In theory, your local stations may broadcast both over-the-air and over-the-Internet at the same time but there is an additional hurdle. The local station would also need to have worked with Roku to create a Roku channel. Finally don't expect the local station to add all their content to the Roku channel. Typically, I find about 3 clips per news broadcast. The national CBS and NBC news is a little better in that they do have a larger selection of video clips. FOX News is also available but again, the selection is limited. International news seems to be fairly well covered by a couple other Roku channels. Weather fairs a little better. Weather Nations does a really good job of covering the entire nation and still provides a good deal of detail on local weather.
