Synopsis

The first season of the lush, lavish and frequently lewd and lascivious British historical drama Rome covers the years 52 to 44BCE, beginning with the return of Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds) from the Gallic wars and ending with the fateful "Ides of March". Though returning to a hero's welcome, Caesar realizes that he's stepping into a snake pit of deceit and corruption. The Patrician ruling class, worried that Caesar will make himself emperor and abolish the Republic, intend to strip him of his power. His scheming niece Atia (Polly Walker) is already undercutting her uncle by forcing her daughter Octavia (Kerry Condon) to marry Caesar's most influential nemesis, the aging Pompey (Kenneth Cranham). Playing one side against the other to keep Caesar at bay, Pompey proves so effective that Caesar must ask his friend Marc Antony (James Purefoy) to help him vanquish his foes, even if it means all-out civil war. Meanwhile, a pair of humble soldier, the virtuous family man Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and the hedonistic Pullo (Ray Stevenson), simply try to stay out of everyone's way and survive--but instead find themselves at Ground Zero of virtually every major historical turning point during the series' turbulent eight-year timespan. Pullo in particular spends much of his time squeaking out of one death-trap after another, somehow managing to enrich or aggrandize himself without even trying. His main contribution during Season One consists of taking Atia's callow son Octavian (Max Pirkis) under his wing, teaching the boy the ways of warfare and women. Eventually Octavian will emerge as the greatest threat against the pro-Caesar forces of Antony after Caesar's assassination--and thus the redoubtable Pullo has once more unwittingly altered the course of history. Not only was Rome an international success during its first season on the air, but the series also garnered an Emmy award for its American run on HBO. ~ Hal Erickson

The blu-ray discs have a clear picture in the original aspect ratio of 178:1 with good sound quality. It includes bonus features. The discs are packaged in two blue plastic blu-ray disc holders which are housed in a cardboard slip cover. This is an ambitious HBO mini-series that was nominated for several Emmys. The story is a human drama that takes place in Rome and centers around the friendship of two historical figures, Pompey and Cesar. It begins with Cesar's return from an eight year war after conquering the Gauls and continues into his climb to power. The story unfolds through betrayal, family dysfunction and violence. It is unfortunate that more episodes were not produced.

This show revolves around the ascension of Julius Caesar, and features a number of different characters- from a pair of Roman soldiers, to a noble family living in the better part of Rome. The Disc set comes in a nice package, durable and long-lasting if treated well. The series features a historical background series which appears during moments of the film, to explain what you are seeing. It gives the viewer historical insight into the Roman culture, and you can tell that the show was designed to be as close to what Rome was like as is possible. Great show!

Such a small investment to make (2 seasons make up the whole series) for such a great experience watching the rise and fall of Julius Caesar, Marc Antony and Cleopatra with a complete cast of actors playing both real and fictional characters taking you on a journey of ancient Rome that is just fantastic.

I never saw this when it aired and always wanted to. When I saw it as a bestbuy deal of the day I decided to finally buy it. I haven't finished the whole series yet but so far I'm really enjoying it. If you enjoy historical dramas and HBO shows you'll probably enjoy this series.

Closer to being historically accurate than most TV and movies about Rome, and I really liked the view you get of the common plebs life. It's not all marble mansions and feasting; there is a dirty, hungry city shown in all of it's nasty, gang controlled day to day life.

A great series with interesting characters. I would put it up there with game of thrones. My only complaint is that they rushed the season and crammed like 10 years of history into 8 episodes.

I like this series because it comes close to being historically accurate. It does combine a few historic figures into one character and presents scandalous rumors as fact, but it's better than the stuff on the History Channel.
