Romeo Must Die [DVD] [2000]

Andrzej Bartkowiak's Jet Li-starring, kung-fu-meets-Romeo & Juliet action/romance Romeo Must Die comes to DVD in a fairly complete presentation. A widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, behind-the-scenes footage, and two music videos from the film's co-star Aaliyah -- "Try Again" and "Come Back in One Piece" -- are examples of the disc's diverse extras. The movie's high-flying martial arts and special effects are given their due in the "making-of" documentary, which covers the choreography of the fights and stunts, the development of the visual effects, and the shooting techniques used to deliver the film's unique brand of action. Filmographies of selected cast and crew members, two theatrical trailers, a "making of" special for Aaliyah's "Try Again" video, web access, and an interactive martial arts game round out the disc. Though it may not go into enough depth for hardcore kung-fu film fans, the DVD does provide entertaining extras along with one of 2000's most surprisingly successful films.

    Synopsis

    Romeo Must Die
William Shakespeare's streak as the hottest storyteller in Hollywood continues with this modern-dress variation on Romeo and Juliet. In this loose adaptation, Hang Sing (Jet Li) is a former police officer from Hong Kong who comes to the United States following the death of his brother, the leader of an Asian crime ring. Hang Sing discovers that his brother had become involved in a turf battle with an African-American gang, led by Isaak (Delroy Lindo). But his blood lust begins to subside when he falls in love with Isaak's daughter Trish (Aaliyah) and finds himself torn between his affection for her and his desire for justice against the men who killed his brother. Romeo Must Die was the directorial debut of noted cinematographer Andrzej Bartkowiak; the supporting cast includes Russell Wong and Isaiah Washington. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Jet Li lays the SMACK down!

A fine Jet Li flick where he kicks everyone in the teeth and then some. This also stars the late Aaliyah, the gorgeous singer who died in a plane crash several years ago. DB Woodside of 24 is in it too, it was funny seeing him with no goatee and in a...(read more) much less serious role, as on the last seasons of 24 he played the president of the United States. So Li's character, Han, finds out his brother has been murdered in LA while languishing in a Chinese prison. He breaks out and goes to LA to find out what happened, befriends Aaliyah, unwittingly makes enemies in the process and comes to the final climax with the man who killed his brother. A great action movie and for $7 at Best Buy, you can't beat that.

I actually remember first watching Romeo Must Die back in 2000 when I was 19 years old and only a few months away from joining the United States Navy. Romeo Must Die centers around the story of Han Sing (Jet Li) who comes to America from China for certain reasons. He is also trying to come to terms with what has happened to his deceased brother and ends up connecting with Trish O’Day (Aaliyah). However, one of the main problems with this is that Trish O’Day and Han Sing come from families that do not get along with each other and are involved in a bloody feud so to speak.

Hun is the true existential hero that goes forth and seek revenge on the person (s) that killed his brother. Aaliyah is so great in this movie, they have so much chemistry in this movie. Non-Stop action comedy which I love never gets old in this particular movie which to me personally has replay value & also the reason why I purchased the Blu-Ray version for enhanced clarity/resolution after already owning the DVD version for quite some time now.

In debut movie, Aaliyah showed the range of acting ability and that she was going to be an actress to look forward to (well, until her untimely death in 2001). Now Jet Li showed why he is the King of Wire Fighting, with the different fighting stunts and action in this movie

Romeo Must Die is an enjoyable, well-constructed but disposable entertainment it was meant to be. To a degree, though, it has been tinctured with sadness, because it's essentially the beginning and end of the promising career of Aaliyah, Highly recommended

Good action movie, lot's of kung fu. The special effects on the fight scenes were silly at times and a little choppy. Other than that it's a good movie.
