    Synopsis

    Sailor Moon R: The Movie
This animated film is based on the Sailor Moon series of television and comic-book adventures that have found enormous popularity in the United States as well as Japan. Usagi is a young girl who possesses a mystical brooch that imbues her with a special power. Upon uttering the phrase, "Moon Prism Power, Make Up," she is transformed into the powerful Sailor Moon, a superheroine whose mission is to protect humanity from evil demons from a parallel universe. Sailor Moon and her fellow Sailor Scouts must thwart an attempt to steal the life force from the unsuspecting inhabitants of earth. This is the first feature-length film based on the Sailor Moon saga. ~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, Rovi

A Solid Take on a Classic

After some disappointing visuals with Viz's blu-ray and HD remasters of classic Sailor Moon, the movie finally hits a high mark with crisp, detailed images worth watching in true HD. The movie's voice cast offers a solid performance, though as some have stated, those who remember the original 90s dub may be disappointed to find its existence is completely avoided here. For all of the original companies' (DiC and Cloverway's) slip-ups with the TV show, the movie was remarkably faithful to the source material. I'll miss hearing Terri Hawkes voicing Serena (or Usagi, as Viz uses the original names - which can be a bit jarring in English) or hearing "the Power of Love" playing during the climax. I wish that Viz at least gave us the option of seeing the old dub again in HD, instead of trying to wipe out all memory of its existence. This aside, those seeing the movie for the first time will likely enjoy it and fans of the original dub may enjoy the comparisons.

Long before Mamoru found his destiny with Usagi, he gave a single rose in thanks to a lonely boy who helped him recover from the crash that claimed his parents. This long-forgotten friend, Fiore, has been searching the galaxy for a flower worthy of that sweet gesture long ago. The mysterious flower he finds is beautiful, but has a dark side- it has the power to take over planets. To make matters worse, the strange plant is tied to an ominous new asteroid near Earth! Faced with an enemy blooming out of control, It's up to Sailor Moon and the Sailor Guardians to band together, stop the impending destruction and save Mamoru!

While Viz has had questionable video quality on their releases of of the classic Sailor Moon series, run, there's nothing questionable about this release. The Sailor Moon R movie has never looked better. Both the Japanese and English voice casts sound fantastic. There's a neat little featurette that had been screened before the theatrical release introducing the main characters, as well as some Q&A and interview extras with the English voice cast. Definitely recommended for Sailor Moon fans.

Sailor Moon R the Movie was a film I had wanted to see ever since I was a child, so when it was announced that it would be released on blu-ray this year, I was super excited! There was no disappointment with Viz Media's release of this classic and I continue to be impressed with the stunning, beautiful quality of their Sailor Moon releases. I was also rather pleased with the amount of bonus features since I love watching behind the scenes footage! Overall, this is a great buy and I eagerly await the blu-ray releases of the S and SuperS movies!

As someone who showed my kids (and watched with them) Sailor Moon when it was run in the US, I have been awaiting the chance to buy it on BluRay. The picture is very good, especially for it's age. The only problem which kept it from a 5 was that you can not change audio or subtitles with out going back to main menu and restarting. Not a problem if you watch it in only one language, but I am used to changing on the fly. Subtitles are important to me for I suffer from hearing loss and also watch late at night while my wife sleeps.

I loved this movie growing up! Hands down one of my favorites, Just letting everyone know before purchasing that the movie has been re-dubbed. So it will not be the original English voices from the 1990s. Kind of killed it for me because that's what I grew up with and these new voices ruin the nostalgia. They even change the names from Serena to Usagi, etc. Again, not a total deal breaker, just not what i grew up with.

This movie is like the show obviously same characters and goofiness but also there are subjects tackled in story about love and same gender relationship...so maybe if ur not able to explain to ur child about u might skip it until your ready but my 12 year old son was mature enough to understand and we think the story is just as great as the series! Cant wait for S movie!

Viz continues to impress with their new Sailor Moon dub, and now the series' first movie has gotten this treatment. If you are a fan of the series, you will love what you find here, with plenty of action and drama, and even some backstory for Mamoru. The disc looks and sounds great, a far cry from the poorly remastered season sets. You will find a number of bonus features on the disc as well, including interviews with the cast. Highly recommended for any fan of Sailor Moon.
