Shirley Temple: Little Darling Pack [DVD]

With her natural charm and the help of savvy adults, Shirley Temple became the first child-actor superstar. This DVD release offers two of her most memorable films. Little Miss Marker and Now and Forever are each presented in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1. English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. This set should appeal to Temple fans as well as those with a taste for Hollywood films of the 1930s.

Special Features

  • Includes the short film "The Runt Page" - the first movie Shirley Temple ever made

Now and Forever
Ne'er-do-well Gary Cooper is so desperate for quick cash that he's willing to sell the custody rights of his own daughter (Shirley Temple), whom he's never seen. Cooper's girlfriend Carole Lombard is shocked by this callousness and walks out on him, but when Cooper meets his daughter and has a change of heart, he reclaims the little girl and is reunited with Lombard. Still, Cooper can't hold down a job. Another get-rich-quick scheme ends unhappily when Cooper is forced to participate in a jewel robbery. After fighting it out with his confederates, the wounded Cooper begs the victim of the robbery, a wealthy and loving woman, to adopt his daughter and give her the sort of life he is unable to provide. Now and Forever would have been mighty turgid stuff without the combined star power of Gary Cooper, Carole Lombard, and six-year-old Shirley Temple. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Little Miss Marker
Perhaps the most memorable of all of the movies based on Damon Runyon's story because of the winning presence of Shirley Temple (although it was remade three times), this is the story of a little girl who is left as a marker for a $20.00 bet. Temple's father kills himself and the bookie doesn't know what to do with the young girl. Needless to say, she wins over the hearts of all and sundry and the bookie turns over a new leaf to make this little girl happy. Through all the complications the bookie runs in to, including eventually marrying his long-time girlfriend to provide a home for the child, there is a tenor of love and joy that was not matched in any of the remakes. ~ Tana Hobart, Rovi
