Active PFC power supplies use active power factor correction to help computers and other electronic devices draw electrical current more effectively from an AC outlet. For gaming PCs, desktop computers and workstations, an active PFC PSU is a common feature of modern power supply designs. Many models also support a wide AC input voltage range, often 100–240 volts, without a manual voltage selector, but you should confirm the specifications for your particular unit. Power factor correction is different from energy conversion efficiency: active PFC improves how a power supply draws current, while efficiency describes how much incoming AC power becomes usable DC power rather than heat. An efficiency certification, such as an 80 PLUS rating, can help you compare conversion efficiency, but active PFC alone does not establish a PSU’s overall efficiency or quality. Choosing an active PFC power supply for a PC build starts with matching its rated wattage, physical dimensions and power connectors to your components. Consider the power requirements of your processor, graphics card, storage drives and cooling hardware, then allow appropriate capacity for peak loads and planned upgrades. A compatible ATX power supply or compact SFX power supply should fit your computer case and provide the motherboard, CPU and graphics card connections your system requires. For newer high-performance graphics cards, check whether the PSU supports the applicable ATX specification and includes the required GPU power cable rather than assuming that every active PFC model offers the same compatibility. Active PFC stands for active power factor correction. It refers to electronic circuitry that shapes the current drawn from an AC outlet to more closely follow the AC voltage waveform. This circuitry is separate from the power supply’s conversion of AC electricity into DC power for computer components.
