Spider-Man [WS] [Special Edition] [2 Discs] [DVD] [2002]

Some have criticized this two-disc special edition of the mega box-office smash Spider-Man, but those pans are way off base. In reality, there is little, if anything, wrong with this DVD. To begin with, the visual presentation, framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic (yes, there is a full-frame edition out there to confuse consumers), is near perfect. Detail is solid and colors are vivid. In addition, the darker scenes, a crucial element of the film, are stable, with no signs of breakdown. The auditory part of this set, presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital (in both English and French) is both aggressive and crisp. Dialogue is never washed out by sound effects, while at the same time, the use of those effects with the surround speakers is generous. The real marvel of this disc though are the special features, and they are plentiful. The first disc, with the movie, not only contains subtitled facts about the production and the history of Spider-Man, numerous television spots and theatrical trailers (for this and other Columbia/TriStar films), and bibliographies for the main cast, but also two full-length, scene-specific commentaries, one from director Sam Raimi, co-producers Grant Curtis and Laura Ziskin, and star Kirsten Dunst and the second from visual effects producer John Dykstra and his team. The second disc continues the supplements. Divided into two sections, "The Web of Spider-Man -- The Comic" and "The Goblin's Lair -- The Movie." As you might have figured, the first section covers the history and mythology of the comic book series. There is a documentary from the comic book artists over the years, a comic book archive of Spidey over the years, galleries for the villains and the girlfriends, and more. The second section covers the film, with a nice documentary on the making of the film, with plenty of behind-the-scene footage, and an even longer E! Entertainment television special called "Spider-mania." In addition are a couple of very short screen tests, profiles on director Raimi and composer Danny Elfman, a gag reel, and plenty of conceptual art and production paintings. If this all weren't enough, also included are a number of DVD-ROM features for each disc, including the ability to create your own commentary. There is plenty here to please any fan of this film, from those that grew up with this classic comic book character, to those that are newly introduced.

After incorporating elements of comic book style and design into many of his films, director Sam Raimi helms this straight-ahead, big-budget comic book adaptation, which also marks acclaimed young actor Tobey Maguire's first dip into live-action blockbuster filmmaking. Spider-Man follows the template of the original Stan Lee/Steve Ditko source material, with hero Peter Parker an orphaned, intellectual teen loner living in Queens with his aunt (Rosemary Harris) and uncle (Cliff Robertson), and dreaming of the girl next door, Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). On a field trip to a Columbia University lab, Peter is bitten by a genetically altered spider and overnight he gains superhuman strength, agility, and perception. At first, Peter uses his powers for material gain, winning a wrestling match with a purportedly lucrative prize. But when Peter apathetically fails to stop a burglar from robbing the wrestling arena, a tragedy follows that compels him to devote his powers to fighting crime -- as the superhero Spider-Man. When he's not busy fighting crime in a spider suit, Peter moves into an apartment with his best friend, Harry (James Franco), and begins work as a photographer at the Daily Bugle. Meanwhile, his do-gooder alter ego finds a nemesis in the form of the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), a super-powered, megalomaniacal villain who happens to be the alter ego of Harry's father, weapons-manufacturing mogul Norman Osborn. Spider-Man was written by the prolific blockbuster scribe David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Panic Room). ~ Michael Hastings, Rovi

IMO The Start of Marvels Movie Magic

This film and all successors are aimed for all ages. Amazing Spider Man didnt fail imo -it was a fast reboot that simply couldnt be better than this one, so it was well sort of a waste. 1st - "Skull Crusher -Randy Savage RIP." William Defoe is sometimes even funny as the antagonist. Peter Parker is strong but humble like he should, saying in the end that he needs to take care of his responsibilities first. His crush Mary Jane is cute and just interesting. The lighting in the movie is strongly bright and colorfull. I dont know much about 4k version but the blu ray will blind you lol. The only con of this 5star movie and its sequels is it just may be upbeat and light to watch it so many times over. But it Spider-Man, and the best yet, so just get it, right?

I've never been a huge fan of these Spiderman movies but I bought this blu ray because I was curious about the quality of the 4K Master. I am glad I bought it because it is a very cinematic very high quality transfer. With this being mastered from a 4K source there is no reason for them to try to falsely sharpen or falsely 'enhance' any aspect, and they don't tinker with it in any way, rightfully so...and since they don't tinker with it and they leave the entire 50GB disc for just the movie alone to play as brilliantly as possible, you get a naturally beautiful cinematic picture. This is in my opinion well worth buying for the quality of the picture.

Before Amazing Spider-Man there was this

This is Spider-Man on Blu Ray. With the new series being all the rage, this older version is, I believe, superior. It gets the origin story done faster and gets down to business. The villain is rather weak, but why waste a top-notch villain when the origin story will take up so much of the time (Doctor Octopus is the next villain, in the second, and best, installment)? Spider-Man himself lacks the wit of the comics and new series, but Tobey Maguire is good in the role, even if his vacant stares and relationship with brain-dead M.J. lack the crackle and pop of Garfield and Stone. I'd say overall a good flick.

      Great Spidey Movie!!!

This was such a great movie and I have always been into Spider-Man. There were a few differences from the comics and the shows but enough to be annoying or anything like that. There was one thing i didnt really like and that was that Spider-Man wasnt funny at all in this cause in the shows and comics hes hilarious. Thats wat really makes Spider-Man so good. It was a really good movie but i can see a remake in the near future after they make Spider-Man 4. Hopefully they make it perfect as it could ever be.

This is one of my favourite films and now I get to see it in 4K Mastered! Definitely recommend but it's important to note that this is "mastered in 4K" on BD and that this is not a 4K film on BD. You must have a BD Player that has the capability of playing back xv.YCC color, a 4K UHDTV and the cables to get the full benefit of the expanded color! This is best film in the series!

This is the movie that brought us the modern day version of the old spider-man comic book and cartoon character into the big screen. I thought it was very well made. The Green Goblin has always been the thorn in spider-man's life. Great costumes and special effects. Tons of action. Great catalyst for many great Spider-man movies to come.

      My Childhood!

I loved this movie. As a kid, I saw it in theaters and I was blown away. It was spectacular. It's great to see a live action Spider-Man movie in theaters. Tobey Maguire was phenomenal! It actually made me believe that he really is Spider-Man. Being that was no other Spider-Man movie before this one, I dubbed it as being called "Spider-Man: The Movie".

I had the DVD of this long ago, and now I'm happy to have spent less on the blu ray than I did for the DVD. The movie looks and sounds great, plus has all the extras you could want, aside from a cameo by Steve Dtiko. The disc comes with both HD and SD versions, so you can watch it anywhere.
