Replacing my 6-year-old Herman Miller Embody

I work from home and can be in my chair anywhere from 6 hours to 20 hours a day. First, I'll note, I LOVED my HM Embody. It was a very comfortable chair and was great for days I had to be in my chair for 6-12 hours. But I've had days where I had to pull all-nighters or days recovering from the all-nighters that I REALLY wished I had a head rest. I tried building one and retro fitting it to the embody, but it just wasn't great. I finally decided it was time and went with this chair. I do like this chair. Most of this review is comparing it to my embody chair. Pros: • Headrest is great. I'm 5' 7" and it adjusts to my good posture days and does just fine when I'm catching a nap in my chair. • Arm rest is night and day better than the embody. At first the embody arm rest is cool because it does a good job at letting you adjust it without having do buttons and all that. But honestly, it's not very comfortable and the range of adjustments for the embody arm rests was really limited. This chairs arm rests are awesome. They're super sturdy but still comfortable. And while I need to use a button to raise/lower, it swings out so nicely and conveniently. This surprised me on how much I love the arm reset. • Back adjustment - I loved the theory behind my embody chair for 'automatically' adjusting to your posture, but the reality is, it just didn't work as advertised. It was ok, but it wasn't great. This chair however does a really good job on giving back support when/where you want it and lets you adjust as desired for your situation. • Durability - It feels much more durable than my embody. I'm hoping 6 years from now I can still say that. • Silence - One thing I didn't realize how bad it was until I switched to another chair was that my embody chair was somewhat loud. I think it was all the plastic support pieces that makes it have its form. Every time I shifted in my seat though it would make a sound. It was irritating especially since my mic would pick the sound up on my zoom calls. This chair is absolutely silent (after my wheel swap). Cons: • Seat Material - my chair was the onyx flavor of the chairs. I bet compared to most other chairs the material is probably as good or even better. Compared to my embody however, it's still far behind in terms of breathability. In my embody chair and even sitting 6 hours straight, my rear and back would never get uncomfortably warm. I may try someday to have the fabric replaced on it with something closer to the embody. I suspect the fabric is far more durable than my embody but like I said, it's lasted over 6 years and while it definitely doesn't look shiny new, the fabric was holding up for the most part AND was breathable. This chair fabric was disappointing for me. • Seat Cushion - again compared to my embody, this thing feels like I am sitting on concrete. The seat cushion is really firm. Perhaps this will help with the longevity, I'm not sure. It has however been a good reminder for me to stand (I have a standing desk too) more often and out of necessity, it has helped me get up more often. I did purchase a purple seat cushion (the medium one) and honestly, it is perfect for this chair. If I ever do replace the fabric, I'll probably see if they can permanently put that purple seat cushion on the seat. My Experience so far: For the first 30 days I was really on the fence to return it but in the end decided to keep it. In the end - I'm still glad I got it and kept it. The headrest and adjustability has been great. The seat cushion has helped with the firmness and my rear getting warm as well as the side effect of making me stand up more often which I should be doing every hour anyways. I ended up taking the wheels from my embody and swapping them with this chair since I'm on hardwood and the herman miller wheels were completely silent where the standard wheels were almost silent. All in all - I like this chair and would recommend it. I love having a head rest and hate that herman miller decided to force their viewpoint that head rests are evil and not let me choose if I want one or not. (Talk to a herman miller sales rep and tell them you really want a head rest - they get real worked up about how terrible they are). It's not a cheap chair but I think it'll last me for many years. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. Hope my experience helped - especially since I'm rambling after doing another all-nighter. :)

Great chair if your ok with the price and posture

Pros: Was very easy to build, just 3 parts. Very good amount of flexibility for getting the chair setup exactly for you. Warranty Cons: Price, Seat cushioning I ultimately returned this chair due to not feeling like it was worth the price i paid for it. I couldn't sit in it for more than a few hours before i noticed my butt getting kinda soar, but i have terrible posture so that might not have helped since i couldn't stop myself for sitting in weird angles.

    Awesome chair!

Love this chair. Gone are the aches and pains of sitting on my chair after a couple of hours of using my old flat back gaming chair. Looks sturdy and well built so far and Best Buy is an authorized Steelcase retailer so the 12 yr warranty is honored. It did take a day or so to get used to the chair but im thinking it had to correct years of using my old racing style gaming chair.
