Street Trash [Special Edition] [2 Discs] [DVD] [1987]

Street Trash has topped the special-edition want list of many a horror/cult fan for years. Thankfully, Synapse Films has stepped up to the plate and created an excellent two-disc set that is likely to dazzle the film's fans. First up is a fantastic high-definition transfer of the film; it is letterboxed with anamorphic enhancement and captures the film's look with dazzling clarity and color. In terms of audio, fans are treated to the original Dolby 2.0 mono soundtrack and a new 5.1 stereo remix. Both sound great, but the 5.1 mix really shows off the intricacies of the film's unique sound design. Also included on the first disc are a theatrical trailer and two audio commentary tracks, one by writer/producer Roy Frumkes and the other by director Jim Muro. These tracks compliment each other nicely, with Frumkes giving a broad-based view of the production and how the script evolved while Muro breaks down the film from a technical perspective. The second disc is devoted entirely to extras, the centerpiece being a new, two-hour-plus documentary on Street Trash, entitled "The Meltdown Memoirs." It's an excellent piece that was orchestrated and narrated by Frumkes, and it covers the film's history in exhaustive detail, bringing back many of the cast members and key crew people to offer an array of fascinating, often hilarious anecdotes. Also included on disc two is the original 16 mm student-film version of Street Trash by Muro that inspired the feature and a short promotional trailer used to promote the film. The second disc is capped with an annotated behind-the-scenes image gallery. All in all, this is an impressive, comprehensive special edition that offers the ultimate tribute to Street Trash's bizarre appeal.

Synopsis

Street Trash
This shocker will most likely appeal to fans of pitch-black beyond-bad-taste comedy. Others may find it highly offensive and gory as it chronicles the fate of homeless Brooklyn winos when they get into some tainted wine and begin melting into slimy puddles of human goo. The wine, called "Tenafly Viper," is being sold by the owner of a liquor store who found it lying around in his basement and sells it to the bums for a buck. It is later revealed that the wine was deliberately spiked by the government. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
