Synopsis

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Reconstructed using archival film and sound elements long thought to be extinct, this special cut of Superman II pieces together unseen footage shot by Richard Donner in order to present the most comprehensive version of what was to be the original cut of the blockbuster sequel. As initially planned, the first two films were to be filmed back-to-back using the same sets and actors to save on production costs. However, with a budget escalating out of control and Warner Bros. breathing down the producers' necks, the decision was made to drop any further filming on the sequel in order to finish the first movie and usher it into theaters. Of course, the first Superman was a wild success, so then it was just a matter of ramping up production again, though this time, Donner was not asked back. Instead, producers went with Richard Lester, who had served them well with his Three Musketeers films. Decisions were made to drop most of the key scenes that were already in the can, including all of the footage featuring Marlon Brando as Jor-El, the Man of Steel's father. After completion, the sequel found much success in theatrical and home-video box-office returns, though that didn't stop die-hard fans from speculating what Donner's cut would have looked like. Once the Internet was spawned, Warner Bros. saw interest grow more and more for this alternate version, even prompting the company to send cease and desist letters to individuals who had posted a re-edit of the film using deleted footage taken from an alternate TV version from the U.K. With the release of Superman Returns, the company saw this as a chance to finally deliver what people had wanted for years and enlisted Michael Thau to oversee the restoration process. Under the tutelage of Donner's notes, scripts, storyboards, and the director himself, the new version was delivered to home audiences in 2006, thereby not only giving people a look into what could have been, but giving a director an unprecedented chance to realize a vision long thought lost in the annals of movie history. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

Not perfect, but so much better than Lester's film

This is an amazing release in many respects - most of all because I don't know of any other film in history that has been in this exact situation and actually had such a major overhaul long after its release in order to restore it to the film that the studio is more or less admitting SHOULD have been released instead of what Superman II actually became. To start off with, the Jor-El scenes actually make much more sense of the whole arc of this movie (SPOILERS!!), in there is a logical reason why Superman is able to gain back his powers in this version (a touching reason - as much as a superhero film can be "touching" - that fully connects this to the first movie in a way completely lost in the Lester version), and his own humanity and heartbreak over these decisions comes through much more effectively here (again, as much as it could in a superhero movie). Second, many of the other Donner scenes simply far surpass the Lester version in quality and enjoyability - the opening scene comes to mind, as well as the "screen test" scene and the resolution of the conflict at the end, in the Fortress of Solitude (the removal of Superman's magic "S"-throwing antics is worth the price of the DVDs by itself).. And thankfully - oh so thankfully - as much Lester footage has been removed as the plot would allow (including almost ALL of the super-annoying sitcom-worthy bit when the villains show up in that small redneck town). Unfortunately, most or all of the fight scenes in downtown Metropolis were filmed by Lester, and a significant enough portion of other scenes to keep this from being a 5-star film (and I can't say that even all of the Donner footage holds up as well as most of the first film did). And, again, the reusing of the turning-back-the-world ending is a major cop-out (as it was in the first movie), but there's not much that could be done about it here, I suppose (especially considering this was supposed to be the ending of the second film before they decided to use it for the first and just figure out what to do with the second film later). Overall, however, the film is much, much improved, and the bonus materials are great to have, as well - including a short featurette on the process of restoring the film to as close to Donner's original vision as possible, several deleted/alternate scenes, and (my favorite), a brand new commentary track from Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz that sheds much light on how it was supposed to be and how things unfolded. In the end, while it's still far from perfect, this is a welcome addition to my collection, and it totally eliminates the need to own the Lester version.

A MUST BUY! Superman II in blu ray against the 3 WOW brought back memories when I was kid and saw this movie. Big fan of Christopher reeves, there will not be another person who can play this role of Superman ever! You can't replace C. Reeves. richard donners cut should of kept some of the original though really some of the old footage and new footage they could of combined! like supermans flypaper scene that wraps up one of the three, and the famous hide and seek scene! It would of made the movie AWESOME! with both old and new footage combined togethers because both cuts were good! Really you can't go wrong with this movie. It it what it is SuperMan on Blu ray NICE! Truly a Classic! go out and buy it and remember the REAL Superman days!

You haven't seen all the Superman films until you've seen this! Superman II starring Christopher Reeve returns with a never-before-seen beginning and resolution. Director Richard Donner began shooting his vision of Superman II while concurrently filming Superman The Movie. For the first time, his unique vision is here. Jor-El (Marlon Brando in recently found footage) appears in key new scenes that amplify Superman lore and deepen the relationship between father and son. Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) plots more schemes to unmask Clark Kent as Superman. With so many changes, large and small, this version is an eye-opening alternate experience.

They did it man, They did it! Richard Donner and crew re-did Super Man 2 with his original cuts! Gotta tell ya fans, I like this version also! The story has all kinds of cool stuff. Some of the scenes we all know and love have got more of a punch to them! Super Man gets thrown into The Statue of Liberty's Torch to name just one. Lois dogs after Clark ruthlessly. You gotta get this one if not just out of pure curiousity!!

This Director's Cut is actually very different from the Original Cut. Most special editions only have 2-5min of extra footage and minor special features. This edition has a chalkful of special features and a much longer story telling between Lois and Clark and between Jar-El and Kar-El. I love this version. So happy I got it especially on sale.

Richard Donner had much different version of Superman II than what appeared on movie screens many years ago. Superman II is a great sequel but this story is so much different. I will stick to watching the original version. It was interesting to see how different some of the scenes were from the original release. Worth it for that.

Super action and adventure. This is a special cut of Superman II. It's reconstructed using archival film and sound elements long thought to be missing. It also pieces together unseen footage in order to present the most comprehensive version of what was to be the original. Worth purchasing and adding to your movie library.
