    Synopsis

    The Adjustment Bureau
The budding romance between a rising U.S. congressman and a gifted ballet dancer is unexpectedly complicated by otherworldly forces seeking to drive them apart by altering the very fabric of reality in this high-concept sci-fi thriller based on a story by famed author Philip K. Dick. David Norris (Matt Damon) is a rising New York congressmen whose everyman charisma has earned him a loyal following among locals. One night, after suffering a crushing political defeat, David is rehearsing his concession speech in a hotel bathroom when out of a stall wanders Elise (Emily Blunt), who was hiding out from security guards after crashing a wedding. The chemistry between David and Elise is instant and electric. But as fast as she appeared, Elise has vanished, leaving David to wonder if he will ever see her again. A few days later, as if by chance, David is boarding a bus for work when he spots Elise in a window seat. Though he manages to get her number this time, David is terrified when he arrives at his new job and discovers a mysterious group of men performing an unusual procedure on his paralyzed co-workers. Informed by the imposing and sharp-dressed Richardson (John Slattery) that he has just seen behind a curtain that few will ever know even exists, David agrees never to tell anyone of their encounter or talk to Elise again lest his entire memory be completely erased. But three years later, when David spots Elise walking down the street from the window of a city bus, he can't resist the urge to rekindle their romance. Unfortunately for the two young lovers, the mysterious agents at the Adjustment Bureau are determined to keep them apart at all costs in order to ensure there is no deviation from the master plan drawn up by "The Chairman" for the future of all humankind. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This is a very unusual movie in that it is pure romance story, where the romance alone would be good enough to watch this movie. But its also a scifi story with a lot of craziness happening. Both leads have great acting and seem to have chemistry, though Emily Blunt has been excellent in pretty much every movie I have seen her in. I bought after enjoying the second time watching it, and I forgot how strong the romance aspect of the movie was since I remembered mostly the science fiction and the mechanics at work with the Adjustment Bureau (ie the science fictions aspect). I actually found it very touching and ended up buying the movie to watch again and to see the deleted scenes (last time I watched was on amazon digital rental without any extra). Its quite a captivating movie due to trying to understand what is going on, and nail biting in the sense that the Bureau has so much power at its disposal and the stakes are very high. Its one of those rare movies I want to immediately watch again, but I bought the Bu Ray to see the bonus content and own in my small collection of must have movies (like Limitless and Prometheus) I can highly recommend this to people that like watching a complex and thoughtful plot, that isnt full of over the top action and explosions everywhere - though it does have some great action sequences, made more interesting due to the Bureau's capabilities.

An enjoyable adaptation of a Phillip K. Dick story. Like most of the author's stories, it is a thought-provoking social metaphor - this one primarily about ideas of fate and ultimately governmental and bureaucratic efforts to control personal freedoms. Chases through teleporting doors are reminiscent of various Looney Toon incarnations, without Bugs Bunny or the humorous intent. At times, it moves too slowly or falls a little flat, but as with the author, it endures as a thinking-person's sci-fi thriller.

Agree with the rest of the reviewers with 4 stars. I love the mind of Philip K. Dick, the movie was made from his story, "The Adjust Team", great read. This movie was missing an element, a true bad guy. Never was anything to fear but the reboot. I thought the acting was ok, Matt Damon was great, Emily just ok. Some other movies derived from Philip K. Dick's writings like are, Minority Report, Blade Runner, Total Recall, Paycheck, A Scanner Darkly. He had a wild writing mind, loved him!

fun romantic "thriller" i unexpectedly thoroughly enjoyed! this is categorized as a thriller, but has larger themes of a romantic film since damons character will do ANYthing to be with his love [@ 1st sight]. i also love that his love for her prevails! blunts performance (along with her ballet skills) are as remarkable as her! the extras are also well worth the buy (& came with a free movie ticket to see jason bourne) win/win!

I'm going to watch any flic w Emily Blunt in it! That said, conceptually the idea of "The Adjustment Bureau" is brilliant. I'm not much on the "I will do anything for love" type plots, forgive me Meatloaf. Emily Blunt's very appearance in this film saves it from its shortcomings. However, even I have to admit her character trusts David and the idea of walking through doorways into strange new places a little to easily for my taste.

I originally saw "The Adjustment Bureau" on the big screen and I loved it! Matt Damon never disappoints in any of his high-action movies -- and this is no exception. Even though the premise could be considered as science fiction, it still leaves you thinking at the end of whether or not the "Bureau" could actually exist. The next time you spill a cup of coffee on yourself, you'll know just what I mean.

A man and a woman fall in love, repeatedly, but are continuously separated because their lives will have greater meaning if they are not together; if they are, they will not follow their certain "paths". Brings up the questions of if we really have free will, and how god may feel about that, but it is very craftfully played out, without any religious overtones or ideas.

I thought the story behind this movie could have been a fantastic one if it was executed a bit better. I loved the sci-fi premise of an independent and passionate hero tinkering with predestination by trying to exert free will. And, for the most part, the movie was good. It was a little flat, though, compared to what might have been.
