I bought this gift for a friend that recently joined our faith, thinking that it would be a great gift without actually watching the entire series myself. I'm happy to say that not only did he enjoy it as a gift, but also that I enjoyed the series without having to purchase another DVD set (thanks Netflix!). We can nitpick the nuances and debate back and forth about the historical (in)accuracies depicted in the series OR whether or not there is need for yet another re-imagining of The Bible via the entertainment arts for mass consumption. For what's presented, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey's The Bible services well: major moments of the sacred text and scriptures of the Bible presented to a modern audience in all its highly defined glory. But as something "new" or "different" from what has already happened or been told, this series is far from being a must grab item for one's collection of biblical stories and history. Definitely worth a watch, but do not purchase expecting the waters to part of for the heavens to open up.

Religion : Catholic Disclaimer : i haven't seen the whole set of 4 discs. I onle completed watching the first Disc. I am a Catholic by Birth and have read the whole BIble twice. While the overall flow of the storeis in this series is not that bad, there are lot of places where the story is not consistent with what is said in the Bible ( KIng James version I am referring to). The depiction of Sodom, and the story have a lot of missing parts. The story of Moses also are missing a lot of small but important parts ( like God telling him to remove his shoes, God telling the Israelites to have Dinner while standing during the day of Passover. No reference to Bethuel or MIlcah, where MIlcah is Abrahams brother. While I was able to understand the genesis without much diffculty, as I know the whole genesis, it will be difficult and yet deceptive for people who haven't read the bible or who dont know about the genesis.

Definitely in line with the marketing of this presentation of chosen portions of GOD's WORD, this gives more for the viewer to take in. "The BIBLE" (1966) by Dino DeLaurentiis, itself appeared to be a labour of love and was an excellent presentation of the early portion of the Book of Genesis. He had limited time (and of course, in 1966, the concept of a "mini-Series" was unknown), and theatrical release, and I would believe, respect for GOD's Word, did not lend itself to the type of serialization that occurred in decades prior, with certain theatrical subjects ( e.g. Superman, The Marines, Flash Gordon, etc). In the portion of the DVD I have viewed, I witnessed the care of presenting the subject as realistically and in loyalty to the Word of GOD. The fact that some of the producers (husband and wife Burnett and Downey) are Christians, added to the quality and interpretation of the content.

I had never had the attention span to read the bible, since I'm 16, but when history was coming out with the bible on a movie, I knew this would be my chance to see what all happened. After watching the 10 hour film, it seemed like the old testimony if the bible is about how the Jewish people came to be & the new testimony is the forming of the Christian religion. The main story is all here; Saul, Peter, John, Jesus & his death, but there were parts left out. I may not have read the bible, but back when I was in church, I remember a story about 2 brothers who could choose between 2 lands & another story about a man who slapped his donkey & the donkey talked to him. I don't know who they were, but I vaguely remember those stories from the bible. So it is not like "the entire chronical", but I guess it must be close.

This is a compelling and inspiring look back at where the "God and Human" history has taken us. It shows how we have messed things up, but does NOT rub our noses in it. Rather, I ended up being awe struck at just how patient God has been with us, how many "do over" opportunities we get. But, the biggest take away is to realize that God is really close to us, really does watch us. The key has been replayed over and over in the history presented. We have to step forward, take what is being offered, and be willing to work to let the opportunity "bear fruit" in our own lives. It is not hopeless, not then - not now - not ever!!! Open your mind and heart and soak it in!!! You won't be disappointed!!! You'll even be normal but changed for the better!!!

Many inaccuracies. It makes me wonder, was the purpose of this series to draw people to God or entertain them? One of the inaccuracies that I did not like was when David was confronted by the prophet Nathan about his sins, David, humbled himself, repented, and wrote Psalm 51 which is a great psalm asking God for forgiveness. Something we all should be doing. Instead, in the series he was presented as an arrogant King rebelling against Nathan. Also, Why not make the people speak in their native tongue, which would have been mainly Hebrew, with some Aramaic and some Greek. Again, their interest of making money seems to have been more important than sticking to the Gospel.

      Exceeded expectations

I fully expected the usual watered-down, ultra religious, corny plot lines and storytelling that is evident in many other religious works. However, this is excellent. The production value blew away all my expectations. Granted, they weren't that high to begin with, but Mark Burnett and his wife really did an impressive job bringing the stories of the Bible to life in a way that makes it palatable to a much wider audience. This work is quite mainstream in terms of its cinematography, action, and content. I recommend it to anyone, even those who may not necessarily be familiar with the subject matter or content of the Bible.

I watched only the 1st 2 of 4 blu-ray discs so far. It is great for succinct review but lacking in details for my taste. However, I do understand that there are those who may be turned off by too many details. It is probably challenging to condense the important details of the entire Holy Bible into bite-size episode for the History Channel. It is up to the individual to read the Holy Bible to investigate what it actually says and how it may apply to his or her life. If this series can inspire a person to seek the truth with an open mind and an honest desire, it would have served a noble purpose.
