Synopsis

The Black Stallion
This beautifully mounted adaptation of Walter Farley's story for children tells the tale of Alec (Kelly Reno), a young boy touring the world with his adventurous salesman father (Hoyt Axton). While travelling back to the United States by ship, Alec discovers a wild, beautiful Arabian stallion being brought along in the cargo hold. When disaster strikes at sea, the ship sinks, and Alec and the stallion are the only survivors. Alone together on a nearby island, the boy and the horse develop a relationship; wary of each other at first, they learn to trust each other, and they become close friends. When a rescue party finally finds Alec, he refuses to leave the island without the stallion, and the horse goes with Alec to the small town that is his home. Alec's mother (Teri Garr) is at a loss about what to do with this remarkable but difficult animal. Henry Dailey (Mickey Rooney), an elderly horse trainer who lives in the neighborhood, senses a special connection between the boy and his horse; he's soon convinced that with the right training, and the boy as his jockey, the horse could be a champion on the race course. First-time director Carroll Ballard captures the mysterious relationship between humans and animals, treating the stallion with the same intelligence and respect as the rest of his cast; he also draws fine, understated performances from Kelly Reno and Mickey Rooney, and Caleb Deschanel's photography makes this a feast for the eyes. The Black Stallion is that rare contemporary family film that will fascinate adults as much as their kids, if not more so. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

At first I was skeptical after owning the MGM DVD and a couple of other video transfers over the years. The picture transfer is better than I expected. For a picture shot on film more than 20 years ago - you would expect plenty of graininess. The only grain I could detect were typical in night time exposures. Well worth the purchase - the sound and music score make this one of the better purchases for a classic film that stands the test of time. Well done!

This movie is not your average horse movie. This movie is about the love of a boy for a horse and the story takes a path that spans over several continents, ultimately ending up on Mickey Rooney's farm. One might say that the boy and the horse have a symbiotic relationship which grows over the course of the movie. A bit slow at first, but the movie ends in a glorious crescendo. Great for kids of all ages.

I had seen this movie previously and wanted my 8 year old grandson to see it. It was on on-demand one evening and I taped at my home. He saw it and loved it so I ordered his copy for him to take home and watch with his parents. It is wholesome, beautifully photographed, and is about a very special relationship between a boy and this lovely wild arabian stallion who were marooned on an island.

I defy anyone who can walk away after viewing "The Black Stallion" without a smile on their face. The cinematography is superb, Rooney and Reno are outstanding and perfectly matched. I own few movies these days, but BS is a must have in anyone's collection. I gave my original to my grand-daughter for her last birthday. Cheers!

I was obsessed with this book, wore the pages out reading it all the time. Saw the movie on TV one day and loved it. So happy to now own this movie. It was made ages ago but this classic is a great movie for families and people that love horses. You'll laugh, cry, anger and cheer. It is just amazing now I need to find the other ones in the series.

I remember watching this film when I was 8 years old and this movie captured my heart between a boy and a black stallion. There was hardly any dialog in the film but it didn't matter, because the bond between the boy and the horse speaks from the heart, and the Cinematography and the musical score was exceptional! Highly recommended!

I usually avoid the sale bins because I would get lost in the memories and would end up buying way too many movies. I, however, could not resist "The Black Stallion". It is in many ways a powerful presentation with a good message. Appropriate for the whole family!

Although it was released many years ago, this timeless story is still a very good film about a boy and his horse. The Black Stallion was a family favorite, and I was happy to re-discover it at Best Buy.
