Synopsis

The Color Purple
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple spans the years 1909 to 1949, relating the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Southern black woman virtually sold into a life of servitude to her brutal husband, sharecropper Albert (Danny Glover). Celie pours out her innermost thoughts in letter form to her sister Nettie (Akousa Busia), but Albert has been hiding the letters Nettie writes back, allowing Celie to assume that Nettie is dead. Finally, Celie finds a champion in the don't-take-no-guff Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), the wife of Glover's son from a previous marriage. Alas, Sofia is "humbled" when she is beaten into submission by angry whites. Later, Celie is able to forge a strong friendship with Albert's mistress Shug (Margaret Avery). Emboldened by this, Celie begins rifling through her husband's belongings and finds Nettie's letters. Able at last to stand up to her husband, Celie leaves him to search for a new life on her own. A major box-office hit, The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I had never planned to watch this movie. Really had no interest in it. But, I caught it on cable years ago. Real good movie. Is a bit long. The points of the film, Whoopi's film debut & got an Oscar nomination for it. We met Oprah. 1 of Glover's first films, he did have the small role in "Witness" same year. Fishburne. Was nominated for many Oscars but didn’t win anything. I remember that. Spielberg did a good job with this after Raiders, Temple & his 1982 film this film was not something you would have expected him to do then. My favorite scene, per the DVD disc 1 31 Dinner table revolt when Celie FINALLY stands up to Albert. About time. Yes, my only complaint is it is just too long. Beautifully photographed. 2 disc special edition. OK, 2 complaints out of this. NO information included on the film and a little complaint. Disc 2 is yours extras/bonus features. Disc does NOT say this. It looks like it could be the film & just like disc 1 with the film it has the film length on it. BOTH DISCS LOOK THE SAME.

This movie is one of my all time favorites! I love the stories of the characters and the things that they went through in their life. It's a very moving a touching movie about the life of Celie in the early 1900's. Her experiences as a pregnant teen by her father and being married off at a young age and all that she had experienced in her life gives us an insight on how things were for many people living in those times. This is a must watch movie

I saw this movie when I was around 11 years old and it still stands up today as a very dramatic and touching movie. This is the movie that made Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey household names. If you haven't seen it you're missing out on one of the most emotional movies ever made!

Mom requested for Christmas after watching the cast reunion on Oprah. We've seen the movie several times and love it. We have not watched it yet, but I am sure any DVD Extras will be interesting.

Greatness is all you could say about this movie. From the beginning seeing what Ms. Celie had to endure to the end with Sug Avery singing her heart to father. Very emotional and just a great movie
