Synopsis

The Gate
During a boring, routine weekend, young Glen (Stephen Dorff) and his best buddy, Terry (Louis Tripp), decide to explore Glen's backyard. Before long, the boys come across a strange hole in the ground which yields all manner of sinister prizes. Consulting one of his heavy-metal record albums, Glen comes to the correct conclusion that the hole is actually the Gate to Hell. Offering a sacrifice in the form of a dead dog, Glen further opens the portals of Hades, through which pass some of the most hideous demons imaginable. A surprise box-office hit, The Gate yielded a sequel, predictably titled Gate II. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. It's the typical 80s kids movie, but this time it's in the fantasy/horror genre. It's not gory or over the top. It's just a fun, bizarre ride that takes place in a kid's house while his parents are away. Think Weird Science but without the hot chick. I was a little disappointed in the packaging. I thought it was going to be like the packaging for The Hills Have Eyes (Wes Craven version) that Arrow put out last year. The Gate came in a simple slip cover. Other than that, the picture quality was cool and so were the extras. This is a single disc release.

Watching the Vestron Blu-ray release of the The Gate marked the first time that I had watched the film since my childhood - approximately 25 years ago. The film has held up fairly well - though, in my opinion, it is a notch below other 80s horror/adventure classics with young casts (i.e., The Monster Squad, The Lost Boys, The Goonies). Video and audio quality are good, not great, and the release is chocked full of quality extras.

The Gate is a whirlwind of some really fun effects sequences, and those sequences give the film an enjoyable energy that the film's kind of haphazard story telling never really does. There's so much going wrong in Glen's world that it almost becomes comical after a while, and in fact some horror fans probably will be prone to giggle at the hordes of little demons overtaking the family home.

The 1980s were a special time. It was a time of practical effects with occasional stop motion animation, and a day when playing records backwards drove parents into a "satanic panic." The Gate is a relic of this mystical magical time, following a group of kids who do '80s things with '80s consequences-- and if you're like me, that kind of thing has great re-watch value.

Like most of the Vestron titles, The Gate is not for everyone and due to this niche line of release, it is rather expensive. However, fans of the film will be pleased with the transfer and supplements. Conversely, fans of 80's cheese who have never seen this, should more than enjoy it.

The Gate was ahead of its time, story wise but mainly effects wise. Sure some of the stop motion would be scoffed at by today's cgi pampered audience. But watching those creepy little demons chase around little Stephen Dorff. Is still are unnerving today as it was when i was a kid.

Vestron has out-done themselves this time. One of the best kids horror films of the 80's is unleashed on blu ray for the first time and it is glorious. Even as a kid, it's obvious Stephen Dorff had potential! The visual effects are great. The story is great. See this film!
