    Synopsis

    The Homesman
A strong-willed woman recruits a loathsome drifter to help transport three insane women across the unforgiving Nebraska Territories so that they may find sanctuary with a compassionate minister and his wife in this drama directed and co-written by Tommy Lee Jones. Driven to madness by the harsh realities of pioneer life, three women (Grace Gummer, Miranda Otto, and Sonja Richter) living on the outskirts of the American frontier are rescued from certain death by pious Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank), who selflessly takes on the task of transporting them to safety. Along the way, Mary Bee encounters a low-life named George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones) with his head in a noose. In exchange for helping her transport the women, Mary Bee frees the scruffy stranger, and together the group heads east. In the course of their arduous journey, however, they will encounter ruthless bandits and vengeful Native Americans. Meanwhile, the greatest test to their resolve may be the harsh winter that's blowing in fast. Meryl Streep, John Lithgow, Hailee Steinfeld, William Fichtner, Tim Blake Nelson, and James Spader co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The disc played fine, no problems. The story was somber/melancholy but gave good insight into what people/women faced in 1850 - pioneering the great plains. A good story, well acted by all. The leads held by Tommy Lee Jones (who also directed) and Hilary Swank (who had no problem presenting herself as very plain), A far cry from her movie P.S. I Love You. HA! Plus a cameo by Meryl Streep, (as always, great job). The story provides a strikingly bleak portrait of life for women trying to settle the Midwest USA. The story - a haunting collage of madness and strength - a very risky film for Jones but I think he pulled it off.

I was entertained all the way through. You can't really ask much more of a movie. If you enjoyed the Ken Burn's documentary series, "The West" then this movie may be worth a watch. Tommy Lee Jones capably directs and shines a unique light on the pioneer life of the 1850's. What makes this movie unique is that it shows the hardships that women had to endure in a very unflinching way that is not seen often in westerns. It doesn't do it in a boring or preachy way which is why I enjoyed it. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that this movie goes to some dark and gritty places that I was not expecting and then shows the resulting debilitating psychosis that is the inevitability of such a harsh life.

I like Tommy Lee Jones and Hillary Swank - this was a little different but good. Not the ending I expected or one I would foresee. So I liked that too. I want to watch it again, since I have a hard time sitting still at home and tend to walk around doing little things while movies are playing when I am alone

A very good story, if you like one about real life in the west, and aren't looking for a fast-moving, guns-blaring, and bullets-flying shootout. Simply life as it was, harsh enough to drive young women into insanity. Can't say I blame them for it either. The movie was well acted by all the whole cast.

Being a big TLJ fan, I was hoping for more of an enjoyable movie. While the acting was commendable by everyone involved, the story just wasn't as good as i hoped it would be. Not an awful movie but not great either. There's a couple of shock value scenes they could have left out.

Best actor/director, Tommy Lee Jones, has been my idol for nearly 50 years. He really knew how to tell this story as simply as possible to draw out the best of his cast. Hilary Swank epitomized her character and made her quite human so we could see her soul. Loved it.

The fact that he made this movie, with academy award winning actress Hillary Swank, shows his abilities. So many movies come out every year now, including small gems like these with top tier talent acting. Wish movies like these were more appreciated.

I really enjoyed this movie, included a little twist I didn't see coming. Hillary Swank just owned this movie, and Tommy was, well Tommy and he delivered as well. This is a well crafted movie, with good writing, directing, acting, editing, etc...
