Synopsis

The Quick and the Dead
Director Sam Raimi brings his trademark comic book-influenced visual panache to this post-modern Western. Sharon Stone stars as Ellen, a mysterious female gunslinger who arrives in the frontier hamlet of Redemption for a contest pitting quick-draw artists against each other. The event is the brainchild of Redemption's evil, corrupt mayor, Herod (Gene Hackman), a criminal who has taken over the town and charges a 50% tax on local businesses. The pot for Herod's deadly game has swollen, attracting numerous colorful gunfighters from around the territory. As each battle thins the ranks of players, the pasts of several participants are revealed. Ellen is seeking revenge on Herod for a heinous past injustice. The fast-talking braggart known as "The Kid" (Leonardo DiCaprio) may in fact be Herod's son. The pacifist Reverend Cort (Russell Crowe), who refuses to participate in the bloodshed, is the fastest draw in the West and a former colleague of Herod's. After several spectacular slayings, Ellen and Herod stage a final showdown, but not before he has made her an unexpected proposal. The Quick and the Dead (1995) is dedicated to veteran Western actor Woody Strode, who appears in a cameo as Redemption's coffin maker, his final performance. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

The Quick and the Dead is a must have right off the top, if you are a westerns fan this is a top 10 movie that delivers. An all star cast of hollywood greats in some of their best acting roles, powerful dramatic performances, awesome action. The 4K Blu-Ray picture has been remastered, with sharp, clean detail after detail that pulls you in as if you are seeing it for the first time. The soundtrack has been given the 4K Treatment as well with each gunshot and explosion shaking the room. One of the best gunfighter movies of all time, a must have.

This is a hoped-up Western with a unusual and an imaginative story-line. One thing for certain it does not lack imagination nor is it short on violence. The film had a very talented front-line of acting crews and the “extras” were also great personalities. The cinematography took advantage of natural light and effectively caught the essence of each scene. The director was very successful in bringing all the film components together in a very effective way, and produced both a memorable film and a pleasurable view

This is one western where if you blink you may miss some important aspect of the action, In "The Quick and the Dead", you have to be quick to stay alive, those who are not...well you get the picture. Gene Hackman is at his best as the town's bad guy. The sultry Sharon Stone shines as the heroine. Russell Crowe and DiCaprio both give their usual Oscar winning performance. This is one of the best westerns for fast shooting action.

'The Quick and The Dead' is a cool concept for a movie, and the cast is almost completely perfect (except for Sharon Stone) in the lead part. Unfortunately, the movie gets a little hoaky at times, and hurts the overall presentation. Still, not bad. This Superbit version offers DTS sound, not available on the regular dvd version.

It is hard to believe that it has now been over 20 years since this movie first came out. Great cast, great story, and I'm not a huge western fan. But this movie will remain one of my favorites for a long time to come!

I love a good western and this one fills the bill. Plenty of good action, not too complicated a plot with good acting especially the gun twirling tricks. it's good when actors take the time to learn stuff like that even though it probably never really happened. Looks good on camera.
