Synopsis

The Yards
In this drama, a young man joins the family business without knowing that he's entering a world of danger and deceit. Hot-headed Leo Handler (Mark Wahlberg) has had some scrapes with the law and served time for a crime he didn't commit. Hoping to get his life back on track, he takes a job in the New York subway yards, secured by his Uncle Frank (James Caan), who has a high-ranking position in the New York Transit Authority. The longer Leo works in the yards, the more he realizes that his uncle controls a corrupt underworld where graft, violent reprisals, and even death are just part of the job. Will Leo turn against his family in the name of justice, or will he keep quiet and ignore the danger and lawlessness that surround him? The Yards also features Charlize Theron, Joaquin Phoenix, Ellen Burstyn, and Faye Dunaway. It was director James Gray's first film after his acclaimed debut with Little Odessa. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After spending time in prison for auto theft, Leo (Mark Wahlberg), decides it's time to go the straight and narrow. Returning home from prison, Leo, takes a job at his uncle Frank's (James Caan) company working on contracts with the New York City subway system. Once on the job, Leo, meets his uncle's top guy (Joaquin Phoenix), and before long, he realizes his uncle is involved with corruption, and payoffs. "The Yards" is a gritty drama that sports an excellent cast;Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, James Caan, Ellen Burstyn, and Faye Dunaway. Although, slowly paced, the film puts a smart, and interesting spin on big city corruption. Very much a character driven film, "The Yards" will disappoint those looking for fast action. But anyone looking for an intelligent, well acted movie will be pleased with this one.

Opening Scene: Commenter train rumbling on its’ tracks. This is a story about an extended working class family in Queens [a superb of New York City], NY. An all-star cast is coupled with an interesting sound-track to tell this tale of crime in the big city is realistically told but it does not emotionally connect with the viewer. After your first view I doubt that you will be drawn back to it for a 2nd view. Ending Scene: The story ends where it began – a ride on the train with Ending Credits background the Yard.

This one didn't really knock it out of the park for me. I thought the pacing was a bit slow... performance were good though. I just didn't feel invested into to this one when I watching it. I may have to take another look, but not sure how well it will hold up to repeated viewings.

I bought it because it was cheap and it had one of my favorite actors, Mark Wahlberg as well as a great supporting cast of actors. I was hoping for a thriller with an ending I didm}t see coming but it was instead a slow burn with no fire. A 6 out of 10 in my book.

I still own the original DVD release & it had a decent amount of special features on it but this blu ray release was bare bones! It does make up for it in picture quality & sound! Keep the DVD if you own but upgrade for better quality on this blu.
