Synopsis

The first series of Russell T. Davies' thrilling Doctor Who spin-off kicks off as Welsh cop Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) witnesses the resurrection of a murder victim by a mysterious group known as Torchwood (an anagram of Doctor Who). Intrigued, she investigates and learns it's a top-secret organization that uses scavenged alien technology to solve crimes -- both alien and human. The group is also preparing to arm the human race for the 21st century, which, according to Torchwood's charismatic (and seemingly immortal) leader Capt. Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), is "when it all changes." Impressed by Gwen's intelligence and intuition, Capt. Jack invites her to join the team, which is also composed of tech whiz Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori), medic Owen Harper (Burn Gorman), and receptionist Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd), who plays a far greater role than his title implies. The spin-off's first season is decidedly darker and more grown-up than its predecessor, dealing with cases such as a sex-crazed alien, a rash of cannibalistic murders, alien kidnappings, and a giant demon that threatens to end the world. ~ Karen Andzejewicz

A great series! I've watched almost every episode twice and still enjoy it. I always find a new layer of entertainment each time I watch it. A sexy spin-off to the stellar the New Doctor Who Series with one of the best tv characters, Captain Jack Harkness. If you liked Buffy or Angel then I think you might enjoy this show.

Outstanding effects coupled with the creepiness and originality of the X-Files; what more could you want?

    Great Companion Series

Dark, gritty, and violent, Torchwood is the perfect companion series to Doctor Who. Stuck in 21st century Wales, Cpt. Jack Harkness and team scavenge alien technology to prepare the human race for the future. Unfortunately, the series raises more questions about Jack and the Time War than it answers and the plots are not the most original (Combat is Fight Club with Weevils), but it does provide a perfect set up for Series 3. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart, but definitely a must see for any Whovian.

As a lifelong fan of the Who-verse it has been a great ride seeing the rejuvenation of Dr Who and better the expansion of its universe with Captain Jack. One of the best sci-fi characters to come along in years and definitely a great addition to any sci-fi fans collection.

Torchwood introduces the story of Gwen, a police officer in Cardiff, Wales. Her life is changed when, investigating a murder, she notices a mysterious group bring the victim back to life to ask who killed him. Gwen follows the group and discovers more than she could imagine. The mysterious group led by Captain Jack Harkness is called Torchwood. They investigate all things extraterrestrial or supernatural. The team initially tries to get rid of Gwen, but to no avail. For the rest of the season, Gwen works to know more and adds a sense of humanity to the group. The writing is imaginative and mixes together relationship drama and science fiction elements well. The plot reaches beyond typical boundaries to create a world like no other.

The series is well done and very enjoyable. Their were a couple rough spots with the acting or shooting in the first episode (noting to major) Outside that the production quality it great. The only problem is that the packaging for the set isn’t too good. And that seems to be a mildly consistent problem with the set. Wouldn’t quite go so far as to say don’t by but make sure to save your receipt until you’re sure you have a good copy.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most entertaining and intriguing series I have seen in a long time. I enjoy every minute of it. However, the reason I would not recommend purchasing it is the poor packaging. Not only is it cheap looking, but the plastic was broken and falling apart. I haven't watched all the DVD's yet. I can only hope they are not damaged. By the way, this is not an isolated instance. I have seen many messages on other sites citing the same problem with this title.
