Such an excellent remake
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed.I can't say enough positive things about this. The original game, Seiken Densetsu 3, was good. I enjoyed it, but the largest draw back to it was the combat. This remake fixes all of that. The combat is pretty basic, think musou games basic, but with dodge rolling, the ability to hotkey spells/items on the fly, and a few special attacks- the combat is just complex enough to be enjoyable, but not overbearing. As with the original game, characters can be modified to play, generally, how you want. Between the six characters there are enough classes and options to make a number of interesting team combinations. And, with the ability to change the difficulty at any time, you never feel like you *have* to play the best characters/classes to play the game. The game stays pretty true to the original, otherwise. The story is the same, as far as I can tell, and outside of the game being put into a 3D environment, the towns, environments, and enemies are pretty much the same across the board. The voice acting is... Serviceable. It's standard JRPG fare. The graphics are good. They serve the aesthetic. Overall, I highly recommend this game. It's a great remake, everything you could ask for.

Solid Remake of a Beloved Classic
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed.Trials of Mana originally released in Japan in the mid-90's as Seiken Densetsu 3 and was the followup to Secret of Mana on the SNES. It was never released here until last year's Collection of Mana on the Nintendo Switch. Now, a year later, we get a full 3D remake of the game. Unlike the Secret of Mana remake, this is not a 1:1 retread. The combat is vastly improved and the move to the third dimension gives much more freedom in movement. Unfortunately, to accommodate this new perspective, the co-op feature is given the axe, so no playing this adventure with a buddy (at least the version on the Switch collection exists for this). Also, while I like the remixed tracks, the voice acting leaves a lot to be desired. What really makes this game standout from other action RPG's of its ilk is the ability to pick three protagonists out of a roster of six, and have the story alter itself based on your choices. This adds replay value to an otherwise shorter game, as there are three potential final bosses you can encounter as well as an epilogue that didn't exist in the original game. If you're in the market for a middle tier action RPG that plays like a throwback to simpler times, then Trials of Mana is perfect for scratching that itch. Hopefully this leads to a Legend of Mana remake in the future (as long as they keep the co-op next time!)

Undertake The Trials
||Posted . Owned for 10 months when reviewed. This is a remake done right. If you're a fan of the Mana series you won't be disappointed and you can't miss out on this. Originally Seiken Densetsu 3 or Secret of Mana 2, this one didn't come stateside. If you played it on an emulator you can see how much better this remake is compared to the OG immediately. Square Enix fans don't pass this up. But be forewarned that if you want the platinum trophy you have to play through the game three different times. The story line changes based on who your main character is and even though you can go through the game twice with two different parties of three to cover all six characters there are actually three different storylines.
