Synopsis

Trollhunter
Three student filmmakers venture into the most isolated region of Norway on a mission to confront a notorious bear poacher, and discover that the elusive hunter's true prey is something far more extraordinary. Though Kalle, Thomas, and Johanna thought they were pursuing a criminal, after locating Hans (Otto Jespersen) with the help of some local hunters, they learn that bears are not his true target but a mere smokescreen to obscure what he's really after -- trolls. A secret government agency has been conspiring to cover up the existence of these massive monsters, but occasionally the trolls manage to break their containment area. When that happens, it falls on Hans to capture the creatures at all costs. Trolls are highly sensitive to sunlight, and traditional weapons only make them angry. Instead of carrying a gun, Hans carries an enormous UV light capable of stopping even the fiercest of trolls dead in its tracks. The only way that humans can travel in the area undetected is to cover their bodies in a foul-smelling concoction that makes them invisible to the troll's highly developed sense of smell. Lately, the long hours and grueling work conditions have been taking their toll on Hans, so when the student filmmakers show up looking for a good story, he decides that it's time for the truth to come out, no matter what the cost. Now, if the group can just survive long enough to get their incredible footage to the outside world, they could be responsible for revealing the most impressive cryptozoological discovery in the history of humankind. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Fun take on the "found footage" genre

I first heard about this movie from acclaimed British film critic Mark Kermode, and as it came with his high recommendation, and I'm a fan of Scandinavian novels and films, at $8 for the Blu-ray, how can you go wrong? "Troll Hunter" is a Norwegian found-footage "documentary" about three college students who come across, as the title would suggest, a man who hunts trolls for the government and keeps them in line. The film maintains a very serious and straight-faced approach overall, but also manages to lighten up the mood occasionally with plenty of humor, but not to the detriment of the action going on on-screen. The actors sell the material perfectly, and while we have certainly had quite an over-exposure of the whole "found footage" genre of late, "Troll Hunter" manages to come up with something fresh and different than its Hollywood cousins - it takes a classic myth and puts it firmly in today's context with fun results.

Surprisingly good for a movie about hunting trolls

This movie was an unexpected pleasure to watch. It was intense, but not horrifying. Had a sense of contrasting humor throughout; much like District 9 had in the first half. The characters are well written, the actors are convincing...and then there is Hans. Hans is, well...this movie IS Hans. One of the greatest characters in the "tough guy" genre. Chuck Norris would think twice about confronting Hans. Forget any hesitation concerning subtitles and preconceptions about "trolls" and just watch and enjoy Trollhunter.

I really like this found footage style of movies. There's something especially convincing about the type of acting expected from the actors in these roles. Trollhunter is a shining example of an exceptionally well executed found footage film. It's just a lot of fun and the world the filmmakers have created with the troll expert and the different kinds of trolls is very impressive.

Trolhunter is a great film. The special effects are great, it's suspenseful, the production value is awesome, it's also funny in some ways. It put's a fresh spin on the found footage genre. The worst thing about the movie is the ending, it's a bit abrupt and it leaves you wanting more. But all in all it's a great film.

You really have to see this movie (if you can call it that) to believe it. This is one crazy flick. I found it extremely entertaining though. Anyway, it's in my collection forever now! Definitely worth watching.

This movie is about a college camera crew investigating a big game "poacher" for a class and ending up becoming part of the story.
