U-571 [DVD] [2000]

The DVD of Jonathon Mostow's underwater WWII thriller U-571 supports the film with an impressive range of extra features, including a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS Audio, and a commentary track with Mostow. Featurettes on the making of the film and the creation and construction of the U-571 submarine add more behind-the-scenes insight, but the disc's historical materials are richer and more rewarding. An exploration of the Enigma, the Axis powers' encryption device; archival U.S. naval film of the capture of U-505; anecdotes from a WWII submariner; and a featurette on the British capture of the U-110 (the story of which inspired U-571) are possibly more gripping -- as well as more historically accurate -- than the film itself. At any rate, the DVD gives equal attention to U-571 and the events on which it was based, making the disc worthwhile to action fans and historical buffs alike.

Synopsis

U-571
In this World War II action thriller, American reconnaissance agents learn that a German submarine is sinking. The doomed ship carries an Enigma Machine, a special coding device that allows high-level Axis forces to send messages that can't be read without a similar encryption mechanism. Obtaining a working Enigma device would be invaluable for the Allied war effort, so a U.S. sub is sent out to rescue the machine. However, German forces have already picked up the sub's distress signal and are en route to rescue their comrades. U-571 features a distinguished cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Bill Paxton, Harvey Keitel, and Jon Bon Jovi. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

    Very Unauthentic And Fictional Story

Why did this movie story have to be made up? First the so called U-571 was never involved in what the movie shows. Second after the sub is damaged by depth charges it should have been dead in the water but somehow it gets started up again after being taken over some of the crew of the U.S. sub. It comes in contact with a German ship and gets depth charged a second time but again and with more damaged the U.S. crew gets it started up again. After outwitting the German ship by destroying the ships radio room with one shot from it's deck gun it is able to get under that ship and after is passes out from under the other side of it uses it's last rear fired torpedo to sink it.

I saw this film some years ago at a friend's house on a standard dvd, played on a large crt tv. I just played it on my new Blu-ray player onto my new hd tv, and was blown away. It is almost as if you are on the submarine yourself! The cinematography is great, the plot is great, and the acting is great. This was a great purchase. I wasn't aware that one could get Blu-ray films of this quality for a price almost as low as a discounted dvd! I will be looking for ore such deals at Best Buy in future!

I have seen this years ago, and when this Blu-ray version of this movie came out, I never got around to buying one until it was on sale in the five dollar bin at Best Buy Sherman Oaks. It is a nice addition to my Blu-ray collection, which includes high end Criterion Collection, etc. It is a well acted movie but could be heavy at times to watch due to the subject matter.

The Allies' effort to steal a German Enigma coding machine during WWII. The trick is to make sure the Germans don't find out and change codes. Great cast with Bill Paxton, Matthew McConaughey, Jon BonJovi and more. Lots of action and twists and turns.

This is a great submarine movie. The movie is a work of fiction based on WWII & the German Enigma code device. The U.S. didn’t capture the first machine. Bill Paxton was a good actor.

This movie should be rated right up there with other great war movies. The action, suspense and acting are all superb. The low frequency sounds of the explosions, will challenge even the best sound systems. It sounded great.
