    It's mindless, entertaining action

Let me start off by saying that this is not as good as the first Underworld movie and I think that, generally speaking, they have decreased in quality over time. But that's OK as the first Underworld movie wasn't very deep. We have known for a long time that the Underworld movies are titles where you're supposed to check your brain in at the door, relax, and enjoy the mindless action of vampires and werewolves fighting. That being said, I did find some issues with this title even when compared to the previous one. I will go over some things but try not to mention specific characters. Either way: spoiler alert. My first big issue is one of the main characters essentially dies off-screen. Great, they hyped it up at the end of the last movie and they went nowhere with them. The second issue is that the plot is extremely predictable. I saw the betrayal coming from miles away as soon as the agreement was made. Third, they made Selene out to be this all powerful vampire at the end of Underworld II (and mainly throughout Underworld IV) but they scaled her powers back for this movie only for her to gain God-like abilities in the end. Lastly, Selene has been turned into an emo-goth vampire lacking any feelings, emotions, or even intelligence. She goes through the whole movie plowing over everyone without thinking twice. I'm also disappointed with the video quality. It looks nice but most of the scenes are extremely dark. I had to close all of my curtains and turn off the lights just to watch this movie. It feels darker than the previous ones and I think it was done intentionally to contrast more with the lighter scenes. Either way, I'm not a fan of this decision. The audio is surprisingly center heavy with very little of the surround being used. The actions scenes are great and really shine, as does the audio. I could hear lycans growling and charging behind me, bullets flying over my head, Selene running around me, etc. The action scenes are the true stars of this movie. There are very few special features with this release and the ones that are included are rather short. It's a shame really as the first Underworld movie had a ton of special features. This one has about 30 minutes of special features in total, that's a shame in a movie like this (it being the 5th in the franchise and having a bunch of special effects). Underworld fans, like myself, will still find this enjoyable. It's not as good as the previous releases but it's still fun. I had more issues with the plot this time around and the casting aside of one character, with their death, is inexcusable at this point. But the action scenes are solid, the steel book is really nice, and the setup made me excited for the next entry in the series.

Decent Movie Marks the Swansong of 3D Blu Ray

I have to get this out of the way before moving on to reviewing this film for itself: We all know that this movie was filmed for 3D and released as such in the movie theaters. I pre-ordered this movie, along with Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, back in early April. Upon pre-order, both movies were listed as 4K with Blu Ray/3D Blu Ray included. When I received the Underworld movie, it was only 4K with a regular 2D Blu Ray disc included. I went back and checked my online receipt, and it definitely says "3D." The listing on Best Buy's site had been changed by the time I received the film, however. It no longer said 3D was included at all. I then checked the listing for the Resident Evil film, and it still said "3D" by then, but since May, it too no longer states 3D is included. In fact, I cannot find 3D versions of these films for purchase anywhere. What is going on with this industry strong-arming us out of 3D? It's absurdly ridiculous. That being said, this Underworld film was just "okay." The action was about 65% that of the first two films which followed Selene and Michael. I felt that this film was better than the last one for both story and action, however, decisions made in the earlier films regarding story lines as well as casting seem to now be causing issues for the writers, leaving them to pull curve-balls out of their butts to maintain any semblance of continuity. All that having been said, this film is a pretty enjoyable watch, albeit not in 3D.

I'm giving my audio review of it. But Its a really good sequel. Using Dolby Atmos speakers in "Top middle" mode. At the beginning in the tunnel it sounded really cool because the echos were bouncing off the ceiling not just the effects but even the voices bounce off the ceiling, it was cool. Halfway in this film did a good job with the rain from above, if youve listened to the Atmos "rainfall" demo, its similar to that. I think movies have perfected that rain from above effect. Bullets sound great in this movie, especially when theyre being shot in y our direction, and ricochet fx match the scenes very well, its not just the same sound, and its not in the same positions, which is important to broaden the sound field where your upper speakers are placed, or else it always sounds like its from the same place. I saw this movie in the theaters, and its a different experience, because all of the speakers are above you in a theater you never get that separation, its just a giant room filled with sound.

Ok when I watch films I do so on a 180" movie theater screen with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Boast but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's (Oppo) upscaling technology along with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is minimal. I will say that going over 180" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for 150"+ screens. The picture and sound quality were great. It was a bit dark (actually dark, not dark as in the context). The story moved along from Awakening but seems very forgettable. Its sad too considering how hard the cast worked on this film. Its fallen from grace. The original trilogy is all Id recommend watching.... I still recommend this, but when its on Hulu or Netflix.. Stream it don't buy it....

I love the "Underworld" series of films and particularly love Kate Bekinsale in the role of Selene. The 4K adds to the sharpness of the picture; however, I also have the 3D version of this film and am particularly impressed with how the 3D adds to this film and others. I find that the 3D is better than the 4K because with the LG 3D 4K UHD television that I have everything gets bumped up picture-wise and you get the addition of the 3D effects and depth. "Blood Wars" moves the "Underworld" story along nicely and lets us all enjoy Kate's Selene in her super tight-fitting black outfit!!!! (Sorry, if that is not politically correct; however, reality is sometimes that way!) I highly recommend this latest edition of the "Underworld" saga and look forward to more of these films- especially with Kate Beckinsale in them!

I didn't see this in the theater because of many tepid to negative reviews. I generally pay no attention to critics, but the ones that like Awakening didn't love Blood Wars. I bought it because I have the entire series and am somewhat of a completionist. While Awakening was a blast -lean and mean, BW is expanding the Underworld mythology in an attempt to freshen up an aging franchise. I see what they are doing and have to give them credit. In many ways they succeed in expanding the myth. Many deride the slower pace, but exposition is necessary for the audience to follow along. The look and feel is spot on with the rest of the series, maybe even a bit of a throwback to the original. The actual steelbook is disappointing in that it is some popart mess (I preordered it sight unseen). The European versions are far better looking. However it does include a 4K disc! That's awesome and I something I hope they continue.

I brought this even though I do not have a 4k tv. I do have a bluray player however. This is an excellent movie. I felt the tried to keep up with todays movies and over did it with the look of the villian ( making him huge and then still seeing his face)but they did it in the last UnderWorld too ( abnormally large). It did work for the last movie tho. I did not like that this didnt come in 3d. The last underworld did. but the the quality was excellent. 5 stars . and if I get a 4k tv eventually I can watch the 4k version. and Im sure the bluray players for 4k can play hd movies but I still have bluray players anyway. so ill stay watching this version as long as I can.

A Return to Form for the Underworld Franchise

While I am disappointed that Sony did not release this film on 3D blu ray in the US, I still have to give this item a positive review because the HD and UHD video and audio quality is good and because this film was a return to form for the Underworld franchise. While I enjoyed the previous film Underworld: Awakening, I felt that it strayed too far away from the roots of the franchise. I felt that Blood Wars was an improvement as it returned to the atmosphere, Gothic setting, and style of the first two films which are cult classics among fans. If you like this franchise or if you liked Blood Wars, I would recommend this blu ray.
