300's Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' critically acclaimed comic book Watchmen to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film's world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious free fall out a window perks the interest of one of the country's last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, Watchmen gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. The film adaptation had languished in one form of development hell or another for years after the book's release, with various directors on and off the project, including Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, and Darren Aronofsky, as well as Paul Greengrass, whose eventual dismissal stemmed from budget conflicts with the studio.~Jeremy Wheeler

This is the Zach Snyder 4k extended version of a pretty decent movie. The 4k rendering is ok, nothing to write home about, but it's acceptable. I'm fairly new to collecting 4k's and I wanted to add this movie. It was priced stupidly high everywhere I looked accept here. That's kinda surprising bc cheap 4k movies isn't Bestbuys strong suit. If you like the movie this is a must have.
This was a blind buy, and didn’t know what to expect. However, I really enjoyed it and turned out to be a fun movie. Picture quality was better than I expected. Very thin layer of grain, but nothing to noticeable. Otherwise picture is very clean and detailed.
Even if you've seen this before, it's a remarkably engrossing movie, Probably because of its amazing cast. It's also a movie that takes its time, introduces its heroes and makes their moral compasses very clear. This is the most effective use of Zack Snyder's particular style: dark backgrounds, sharp colors, slow-mo action, random splurts of blood,
Watchmen was quite the polarizing film when it came out - fans of the comic either finding it too close or too far away from the source material. It is a little slow (even more so in the extended editions) but it certainly drops you into that world.
This release includes a regular blu-ray of the directors cut, and then the UHD is the even longer ultimate cut. The UHD is a 2K uprez (do to the film being edited and mastered at 2K, despite the film sources). Between the 2K uprez and the rather strange HDR grading, as well as the fact that you're not getting an Atmos upgrade like the Man of Steel UHD, it's kind of a hit or miss release. Super fans, pick it up, regular fans are probably okay to stick with the already great looking and sounding blu disc.
Of Note: while the box lists DTS Master Audio (and the regular bluray is that), the UHD is a Dolby True HD track. No real big deal as both are lossless codecs once bit streamed out, but just letting people know.
4 stars only because you have to watch it only as ultimate cut. I had the prior version on blu-ray and was curious about the complete story. Didn’t realize that it was just adding a comic book/animated story into the existing movie. I personally didn’t get how the two stories related but the picture looked great and I was happy to have the digital copy again (and in 4K). Had a digital copy from the old days but that was lost when my laptop died as this was from the days of downloading movies to a device that only worked on that device. The cloud based digital copies is a great improvement. 5 stars on picture, 5 stars on sound, I just which it allowed you to watch movie with the ultimate parts added to the story, seeing as many of us have purchased DVD, Blu-ray, etc. Taking more and more out of our pockets. Easy enough to just skip the chapter.
As you can tell from the other reviews, this movie provokes an intense reaction in people. It is the type of movie that you either love or hate. There is no middle ground. But what I can say with certainty is that if you are a fan of the movie this is the version to get.
There is extra never before seen footage that Watchmen fans will appreciate.
The audio and video quality is the absolute best this movie has ever looked.
