A unique VTOL drone

This thing is fast! We recommend this drone for 1 of three cases. 1) Fast Follow Me mode. This drone can track you at up to 60 mph. 2) The VTOL enthusiast. You can fly this like a plane if you get the required skills. 3) Flying by waypoints. At 60 mph and 20 minutes of flight time you can cover a lot of ground if that's your goal. While the user experience and software is not as streamlined as something like a DJI Phantom, it is better than we expected and it allows for a lot of customization. It will take some practice to fly like a pro, but it can be done.

I was very excited to find this "aircraft" (calling it a quadcopter doesn't seem adequate) on a rockin' deal of the day, but after watching additional videos tutorials and reviews, I ultimately returning it for a DJI Phantom 3 4k at the same price as the "deal". I have little doubt this is a really exciting and fast drone, but my concerns arose from the build material (basically styrofoam w/a fancy name), and the lack of a camera. To be fair the X-Plus came with a mount for a Go-Pro, but is quite a bit more DIY than the Phantom.
Really wanted to love this as I like the companies story, but ultimately it wasn't right for me. The drone market is in a rapid pace of evolution, X-Craft is trying to evolve too. I wish them well.

Not your typical drone - some challenges

I was interested in this drone after seeing on Shark Tank and to put a few videos up on my YouTube channel (same name as my nickname). I picked one up and have had a chance to assemble it, fly it, and see some challenges with it.
First, it is not a drone like your Phantom 4 ( I own one as well), Typhoon, SDR Solo or any other. There isn't a dedicated app for it, you are not going to have a view from it onto a smart phone or screen without a first person view add on. You do need to provide a camera and if you want that stabilized you will need to buy the gimbal.
With that in mind let's get to flying. They recently improved the document which helped, out of the box it went straight to a hover and was pretty easy to fly and maneuver in a basic fashion. Once I went to more high speed flight it wasn't as easy as a typical quadcopter. It wants to fly like a fixed wing plane but without control surfaces so it is using varying power from it's props to simulate control surfaces. Due to that nuance it would seem like the control would go a bit haywire. If I had transitioned to horizontal flight and then want to decrease altitude I was at (but keep somewhat horizontal, which you would want to do if you we filming below it) it wanted to just dive out of the sky right toward the ground.
In the same way if I was in hover and switched it to fly horizontally it would lose altitude and I need to know to give it more power to regain.
This is a fun drone if you are looking for something to fly around, it is fast, and want to tinker around. I don't think that as it is now and with the price that it is going to be easy to find a foothold in a market of quad's and hexacopter that are much cheaper out of the gate.
I gave this a 3 largely because of the innovation but anything more than that would be really tough just based on construction (it is a type of styrofoam covered with a decal which really hurts durability) and the radio and all is pretty low end.
If I could give it a 2.5 I would but since I can't I will round to three.

Brand response from xCraft Customer Support

Thank you for your review of the X PlusOne. Your input is greatly appreciated and will help xCraft improve our products.
Due to the X PlusOne’s unique hybrid flying wing design, typical plastic construction would not be optimal. The foam construction of the craft is actually Expanded PolyOlefin (EPO). It was originally developed for the underside of vehicle bumpers and is very impact resistant and lightweight. The vinyl skin adds a layer of protection and stiffness.
Because of its unique design, the X PlusOne does fly very differently than your average quadcopter (and way more fun!). We encourage all users to check out training videos on our website, www.xcraft.io for tips on setup and flight.
At our core, xCraft values our customers. We take all customer feedback seriously and do what we can to implement improvements based on this feedback. Software updates are available on the xCraft website at www.xcraft.io/x-plusone-software/ for current users to make their craft more user friendly and easy to fly. Please check the website regularly to keep your drone up to date with the latest software. With those improvements in mind, we at xCraft will continue to innovate and create products that push boundaries for our customers.
Thank you again for your input. Stay tuned for new and exciting products coming out of xCraft!

Don't waste your money!

Xcraft is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. I should have listened to the guys from flitetest on you tube. I am experienced with flying both quadcopters and wings and thought that combining them together was a great idea, at first. This is very unstable and will crash. Please attempt to fly when there is nobody around and nothing to damage. I do not recommend this to my friends...

What a Rush!

I bought this for my son's 12th birthday. And WOW! What a rush! It definitely is not "just" a toy, especially at this price. And there is a pretty steep learning curve. Fortunately, it has three different modes, Beginner, Intermediate, and "Insane" mode. Be sure to work your way up slowly to the expert mode! For example, starting in beginner mode, keep the black side of the craft facing you for easier maneuverability. Learn the feel of the joysticks before zooming off into the sunset.
Regarding the company, they answer the phone fast, and respond to your needs immediately. I crashed it TWICE in the first week we had it. But the company, xCraft, was incredibly helpful in fixing it back up for me. The company definitely gets 5 stars!
The product itself is amazing. It has such a long range, I have actually lost sight of it in the sky. But fortunately, it has a "Home" switch, which automatically brings it back to land at exactly the same spot you took off from! Once you graduate to the Insane mode, you can really start doing some crazy stuff (watch the YouTube videos for examples). The product is amazingly sturdy, considering how light it is. Five stars all day long!
Yes, it is pricey. However, I haven't had this much fun with a toy since I was 12! But sorry, son. Hand's off Dad's Toy!

The X Plus One is the first drone I have ever flown. Assembly was relatively simple - especially once I read through the instructions completely. B- )
My expectations were that this would be challenging so I started very slow. There was a bit of a breeze which I knew was going to make it even harder, but my son and I were too excited to wait.
It certainly started off a bit rough and had a couple small crashes, but nothing catastrophic. Within 30 minutes, I was able to take off well, hover pretty smoothly and land without incident, even with the slight breeze.
As I became more confident, I took the drone higher (~40-50 feet). At one point, I started to lose control a bit and decided to be amazing and do a flip to come out of the wobble. Turns out I was way too close to the ground and I basically did a nose dive. Ahh!! My son was on the verge of tears but we grabbed the drone and went home.
I contacted XCraft support and they have been amazing!! They were able to help me get every part I needed to get back into the air and even helped me understand more about the craft.
As much as I enjoy the drone itself, my 5-star review is just as much about the company and support. I can't say enough about how helpful they have been and how much fun we're having with the drone.
Once I get more confident with the drone, I'll transition to forward flight and may even get the gimbal for the camera.
