This desktop is a little pricier because it uses a newer and relatively stronger lightweight processor. The AMD Ryzen 5 40 Processor is a muti-core processor, meaning it does a better job handling multiple tasks, such as web browsing and working within Excel spreadsheets at the same time. The purpose of this processor, and this computer for that matter, is to perform these everyday tasks using as little energy as possible. The reduced energy usage can lead to savings in the long run. The flip side is, don’t expect this computer to be a powerhouse. It is more geared for everyday computing, like browsing the internet, watching movies or videos on YouTube, and using basic office software like Word, etc. It is also important to note that this is a Windows PC. Other computers in this price range can come with another operating system known as Chrome OS. Both are relatively easy to use, but if you are accustomed to Windows, this computer will feel much more familiar. While testing this computer firsthand, I was satisfied with its capabilities. Ultimately, this computer will be replacing my mother-in-law’s old desktop that takes forever to start. The difference is night and day. She mainly uses her computer to check emails, play a few games like Solitaire and Candy Crush, and open spreadsheets from time to time. This computer handles these tasks very well. I also installed an anti-virus suite for her protection, and the computer wasn’t slowed down in any noticeable way. Again, given these expectations, this computer will be the perfect replacement for her outdated PC. On top of that, the computer’s case is small. Setting it up in place of the old PC will regain some desk space. In terms of “expanding” or “upgrading” this computer in the future, unfortunately, this is plain marketing speak. The system is pretty self-contained to begin with. There really isn’t a way to add to this system. The motherboard is like a laptop motherboard; it’s small and limited. But then again, the people buying this computer probably won't be upgrading it anyway. Finally, for fun, I installed Fortnite on this system. I play this game all the time on my expensive gaming computers. This computer has no business playing an intensive game like Fortnite. Still, I wanted to see what would happen. It’s almost comical that I was able to download this massive game and get it to run. Of course, it barely ran and the graphics were blocky, but believe it or not, I actually eliminated someone. The game was running at 30 frames per second (see picture). For this game, 30 frames is not sustainable. After my one elimination, I closed the game and laughed my way to sleep. Overall, if your expectations are in line with this computer’s capabilities, the system will be very useful to you. Especially if you’re going to be using it for basic computing tasks.

This is an interesting machine - it's essentially repackaged mobile/laptop hardware into a slim, lightweight desktop chassis. Because of this design, you shouldn't approach this machine with traditional desktop performance expectations. It does exactly what it advertises, but shouldn't be relied on for heavy lifting. As a low-demand workstation, it should serve as a highly capable core device. For tasks like basic office administration without massive data processing, standard web conferencing, or casual media consumption, it handles the workload easily. My specific plan is to utilize this machine as the foundation for a distraction-free writing workstation. For that application, it is almost comically overqualified. This is just the central unit - you will have to supply your own monitor, webcam, speakers, and other external peripherals. The included keyboard and mouse are perfectly fine for immediate use, but not impressive... I'll probably end up replacing them. The bottom line is that if you're looking for a basic work-from-home computer, a straightforward machine for a user who isn't particularly tech-savvy, or a simple replacement tower for a desk that already has existing accessories, this is an excellent backbone unit to plug into that spot.

I’ll preface this by saying that because of the current worldwide RAM shortage, the asking price for the Aspire isn’t going to buy you much more (in terms of configuration/computing power) from any other vendor than what you are seeing here. This is simply where the PC world is right now–that is to say, your dollar will be buying you somewhat lower-spec hardware that vendors are trying desperately to squeeze more life out of simply because anything with a bit more horsepower is going to get prohibitively expensive awfully fast. Enter this Aspire Ryzen 5 desktop computer. Basically, you are going to be running a laptop-grade CPU here with just enough onboard memory to run Windows, and just enough space on an SSD to let you do so, but not much else. A quick look under the hood reveals CAVERNOUS empty space in the desktop enclosure. There’s a diminutive motherboard with a small CPU air cooler and some wires leading to the power switch and front-panel ports—that’s it. There are no extra drives, no add-in video card, the power supply is an external box, and although there is what appears to be a vertical cutout in the enclosure that looks suspiciously like an optical disc or expansion drive bay, there is nothing behind the panel itself. With all this empty space that clearly wasn’t needed, it’s curious Acer didn’t market this machine as a mini or ultra-mini-PC and put the hardware into a smaller, more svelte, “cuter” enclosure. Honestly, I would probably be more forgiving of the performance if it came in a tinier package because the larger form factor is suggestive that you might get more computing power than you really do. BUT, we live in memory-starved times and Acer (like all other manufacturers right now) is doing everything it can to keep costs down on the budget models; so, my guess is that this enclosure is shared with other, perhaps more competent (and expensive) hardware configurations so that new enclosure manufacturing doesn't add to the list price. In fairness, there are a decent number of ports available for peripherals, two highspeed USB ports on the front (one of which is USB-C), four more USB ports on the back, two highspeed and two slower USB 2.0, separate front and rear mic and headphone jacks, one HDMI and one DP video output, and an ethernet jack. Inside is an M.2 form-factor WiFi 6E module and a single M.2 2280 SSD (the longer and more common form factor). I also give Acer credit for including a passable keyboard with the PC along with its pack-in optical mouse. No, the keyboard isn’t an impressive mechanical monster, nor is it one of those insultingly uncomfortable “chicklet keyboards” that would be more at home on a laptop than a full-size desktop keyboard. The keys themselves are half-height with a comfortable amount of travel; I could easily see someone trying it out and not feeling the need to immediately go out and buy something more comfortable or capable. But that’s where the praise stops…and I find myself slightly confused at the rest. The marketing for this desktop includes more than one statement to the effect of “you have lots of space for additional expansion and storage.” Yes, there is an empty cage behind the faux optical drive cover where you could conceivably put an older SATA or even small spinning hard drive, but there’s nowhere to plug that new drive in--no IDE or SATA ports on the motherboard for additional drives, and there is no open M.2 slot for an additional SSD. The M.2 slot that the WiFi card sits in is not keyed to accept standard M.2-form-factor SSDs either. So, that 512GB of storage on the internal SSD you get...you must REPLACE the drive with a larger SSD if you want more storage—there is no “adding onto” the existing storage space when 512GB starts to feel cramped (unless you count plugging an external drive into one of the USB ports). In fact, other than replacing the existing SSD, and maybe replacing the WiFi card if you want to experiment with WiFi 7 down the road, what you purchase now is all you’re ever going to get. The CPU is soldered to the motherboard so you can’t upgrade it later. The 8GB of RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so you can’t replace the existing RAM for something better, nor is there an open memory slot to use for another stick of RAM. There are no PCIe slots on the motherboard, so you can’t add an internal video card, nor is the USB-C port’s bandwidth wide enough to handle an external video card (eGPU) if you decide you want to try your hand at some modest gaming. There IS an open fan header on the motherboard--though I’m not sure where you would install one. There is also an open USB2.0 header on the motherboard and two open half-height slot covers/blanking plates around the back. Assuming that port is actually enabled, you COULD add a slow speed USB expansion card for one or two more USB2.0 ports--but there's not much else you can do to make the Aspire "more" than what it currently is. Okay…yeah…it IS a SUPER-budget PC released at time when such a thing really is hard to come by at legitimately budget prices, so am I being too hard on the Aspire? Maybe. The truth is, 8GB WILL run Windows, and it WILL run an office/productivity program, and it WILL run a web browser, or let you compose and read e-mails, or watch Netflix, or etc. etc. etc.…just don’t expect to do all of that at the same time. I used the Aspire at work for a full week and a half during my testing. Despite its modest specs, it managed to run two 1440p monitors just fine. Most of my work is web-based and I had no problem maintaining productivity…that is, until I opened a few too many browser tabs. Anything more than about half dozen active browser tabs started to have a slight, but noticeable, impact on responsiveness. Once I tried to fire up the companion app to program and control my modular keyboard while the web browser was still open, the entire computer froze for several minutes at a time just for right clicking the companion app’s tray icon or double-clicking its desktop icon trying to open and run it. So, what does my experience suggest as far as recommendations go? So long as I didn’t demand too much of it, the Aspire delivered what I expected—lightweight computing roughly one program at a time. If this is what you need--a cheap Windows machine for web, email, or home-office productivity--the Aspire will likely fit the bill without breaking the bank doing it. And as the RAMpocalypse continues to keep PC hardware prices unreasonably high for the next few years (at least), Microsoft and other software vendors might well start adjusting their programs to operate better in more memory-starved environments (like this one) simply because it will become harder for consumers to find more capable hardware at the same price points. Just don’t expect that this PC, unlike other more traditional desktop designs and configurations of the last several years, will be able to handle your upgraded needs with updated components down the road. Think of it more like a tablet computer in desktop form and that’s about what you can expect here. It’s fine for computing at the very lightest end of the spectrum…it just won’t really do anything else.

When it comes to the decision to buy a desktop computer or a laptop computer, for me it boils down to whether or not I need a built in screen. If the answer is no, I aim for a desktop. Desktops traditionally offer more opportunities to upgrade the internal parts over the life of the machine before needing to throw out the whole chassis. That is unless the manufacturer decides to ship a laptop in a desktop form factor; which is exactly what this Acer Aspire is: a laptop hiding beneath a desktop chassis. If you just need the most bare bones basic web browser and want this to connect to your existing monitor, this is a machine worth considering. It’s lightweight compact form factor make it easy to tuck away into a corner and it’s barely audible fan helps ensure it’s not a distraction to everyday tasks. Those tasks should be not much more than web browsing or email. If you were hoping to start small with this desktop and upgrade parts over time this is not the computer for you. It ships with a 1GB NIC and Wifi 6E. My intent was to add a 10GB NIC to the device, but the motherboard contains no full-size PCIe connectors. Zero. This means no support for a dedicated graphics card, or sound card, or NIC, or really anything internal. The motherboard contains a single SSD slot which is using PCIe 3.0 x 2. The single USB-C port on the front of the machine is a 3.2 Gen 1 5Gbps slot as is the USB-A port above it. There’s 4 USB-A ports on the rear, 2 are USB 2.0 and two are USB 3.2 Gen1, 5Gbps ports but you’ll lose two immediately if you connect the included keyboard and mouse. I heard the 1980’s calling me when I unwrapped the keyboard. It’s the thickest keyboard I’ve seen since Fischer Price introduced their keyboards for toddlers. It feels like Acer scraped the bottom of the bins barrel with the keyboard and the mouse included with this unit. They are not wireless. Replacing these two devices with something else would be my first recommendation. The CPU/GPU and RAM are soldered onto the motherboard and no expansion slots exist to add more RAM. This model shipped with 8GB of RAM and there is no way to upgrade. For all the lack of expansion capabilities I was surprised to see the desktop includes both HDMI and DisplayPort for connecting a monitor. If given a choice, always choose DisplayPort for Windows devices.

This computer is what I needed to do my work from home on. Hadn't use this brand before but I am glad that I purchased it. The tower is small in size, incase you don't have a large area for storage. Also the price was great right in the price I wanted to spend.
