A: Hello Sherri, The Amazon Fire HD 8 Tablet only requires an Amazon Account to get started. As far as applications go to add to the device that can vary. Some applications such as Prime or Netflix are free to download, but require a subscription to access content. Some apps are free to download and use without any sort of subscription. It all depends on what you would like to use the tablet for. For example, I use my tablet when I travel for work. I have Amazon Prime, HBO Max, and Netflix for movies, The apps are all free to download and I pay for the subscription services. I also use Pandora and Tidal for music, same thing as the movie streaming services. I do have several games and apps that I downloaded for free as well with no subscription charges. I can access my email, play card games like Poker and Solitaire and more in depth games like Clash of Clans. These services are free. To answer your question in a shorter way, if you have an existing Amazon Account, there are no additional charges to get the Tablet working. If you don't have an Amazon Account, the device will help you set one up, that is free as well! I hope this answers your question!

Fire HD 8”
Really a very good product at a reasonable price. It comes with the Kindle app which is great for Ebooks. It’s nearly is fast as my phone for searching the internet. The 8’ screen is plenty big and it keeps the tablet compact.

Great Tablet
We have 6 foster children and these budget friendly tablets help with learning. You can set time limits and playing hours. There is a parent app that controls what they can access. Only drawback is you can only set 4 profiles but the workaround is using the same profile on more than one tablet. The information for apps and games is only saved on the tablet that it is opened on. I recommend getting a screen protector and kid proof case.

Highly recommended as an e-reader
I LOVE my Kindle Fire. I bought it primarily for reading ebooks and Kindle's paperwhite technology makes it easier on the eyes than reading on a phone or tablet. I added an after market strap and it's even more enjoyable now. It's lighter than my old Kindle Fire and just as good, of not better on color and graphics. I'm so glad I purchased mine.
