Q: Can this scanner scan old photos?

A: Yes, the Epson FastFoto FF-680W can help restore old photos with its Perfect Picture Imaging System, which includes auto enhancement and color restoration.

Q: Does the Epson FastFoto FF-680W have a document feeder?

A: Yes, this scanner has an automatic document feeder that can hold up to 100 sheets.

Q: What is the maximum size document this scanner can handle?

A: The Epson FastFoto FF-680W can scan documents up to 240 inches in length.

Q: Can someone upload some photo scans at full 600 dpi? I want to see some samples. I got the unit and my scans are VERY grainy/noisy for blacks, and streaky.

A: My very FIRST scan after unboxing was ridiculously noisy in black areas. (So it's NOT dust). It was a clean, colour 6x4 print in good condition, about 15 years old. The black areas were a pure black cardigan worn by someone standing on a beach in front of a patch of dark green seaweed. Both the cardigan and the seaweed had unusable levels of chromatic noise. Tweaking the settings made very little difference. For comparison, I then scanned it on an old cheap flat bed scanner (Canon MX320) and the difference was stark. The flatbed had some noise, but perhaps only 20% of the levels of the Epson. Another problem is that the rollers leave visible impression tracks on old B&W photos. i.e. the FF-680W damages valuable old photos so my advice is to NOT put them through without putting them in the plastic sleeve first. Ironically, because this adds time to your workflow it basically negates the only reason to buy this unit - speed! Feedback for Epson: there's no point being FAST if your results are RUBBISH. PS: I worked in the R&D division of a camera manufacturer for 5 years, so I know something about image quality.

Q: I have successfully scanned photos using the Epson, but when I try and go back and edit the photos, the error message is telling me I don't have permission. The edit button works, but the submenu buttons are all grayed out.

A: I have the same issue, and I find Epson's reply here to be a cop out. I can change the permissions on a file by file basic, but I can not change the permissions on the folder to apply the new settings to all of my previously scanned images. I can not even view a rotated photo using the Windows Photo Viewer, let alone edit or save the files. within the FastFoto software, I can only change the data and filename by right-clicking on the photo and changing the description. The rest of the "edit" menu buttons are greyed out. The folder that FastFoto created to store the scans in is set as Read Only, and the permissions can not be changed using the Properties>Security settings on the folder level. The scans themselves only have permissions to Allow Read & Execute, but not Modify or Full Control. This is annoying.

    A Lifesaver for Photo Preservation

I’ve owned the Epson FastFoto FF-680W for about a month now, and I can confidently say it’s one of the best purchases I’ve made in recent years. If you’re sitting on boxes or albums full of old photos, this thing will transform how you approach scanning and organizing your memories. It’s fast, accurate, and surprisingly easy to use—even if you’re not especially tech-savvy. The setup was painless. I connected it to my Wi-Fi network and had it running within 10 minutes. The included software walks you through each step, and it’s clear that Epson put a lot of thought into making the process as smooth as possible. I used both the desktop app and the mobile functionality, and both worked well. I mainly scan to my computer, but it’s nice to have options. Where this scanner really shines is in speed. I’ve scanned hundreds of old family photos—some decades old—in just a few sessions. The auto feeder handles stacks of photos without issue. I was a little nervous about putting delicate prints through a machine, but the scanner is surprisingly gentle. It even detects and warns if something is stuck or too fragile to pass through safely. The quality of the scans is excellent. You can choose from different resolution settings depending on your needs. For family archives, the default high-quality setting works great. It captures colors accurately and doesn’t over-process the images. The included software also automatically corrects red-eye, fading, and color imbalances, but you can toggle those features on or off. I usually leave them on—they’re subtle and do a nice job of enhancing without making the photos look unnatural. One of the standout features is the ability to scan both the front and back of a photo in one pass. That’s been huge for me, since many of our family photos have handwritten notes or dates on the back. Being able to keep that context digitally is a big deal and saves me a ton of time compared to flipping and rescanning manually. I’ve also used it to scan some documents, and it handles those just as well. The automatic file organization by date and subject is helpful if you’re scanning in batches and don’t want to spend hours sorting afterward. It outputs to JPEG or TIFF depending on what you need, and you can save directly to cloud storage or your hard drive. Over the past month, I’ve digitized nearly two full boxes of old prints—something I’ve been putting off for years. Having all those photos safely backed up and easily shareable with family feels incredibly satisfying. I didn’t expect to actually enjoy the scanning process, but with how smooth and fast the FF-680W is, I’ve started looking forward to these little archiving sessions. Pros: • Blazing fast scanning – Can scan dozens of photos in minutes • Dual-sided scanning – Captures handwritten notes on the back of photos • Excellent image quality – Sharp, accurate, and vibrant results • Easy setup and use – Simple to install and intuitive software • Gentle handling – Doesn’t damage older or fragile prints • Flexible saving options – Cloud, local storage, and multiple formats • Auto-enhancements – Useful and not overly aggressive Cons: • Not ideal for very thick or damaged photos – You may still need to scan those manually • Software interface feels a little dated – It works fine, but could use a visual update • Pricey for casual users – But worth it if you have a large backlog of photos Final Thoughts: If you have a serious collection of physical photos and want to bring them into the digital age without spending hundreds of hours doing it manually, the Epson FastFoto FF-680W is a near-perfect solution. It’s fast, accurate, and handles the job with very little babysitting. After one month of use, I honestly wish I had bought it sooner. This scanner turned a daunting task into something efficient—and even enjoyable.

    Exceeded my high expectations

I thought this was an expensive purchase (esp since I have a flatbed scanner already). So I expected this thing to be great. I'm a week into using this scanner and I am blown away! I've put in about 5 hours of time (including some photo organizing). I've scanned in about 3,500 photos of various sizes and levels of photographic quality and done it at various resolutions. I have been blown away at the speed and quality. I think my wife was as well as she was quite surprised when I was done with the first batch so quickly. It is a bit finicky on things like sticky notes on the back of photos, but even the oddest items went through with ease with the included carrier sheet. I am impressed!

Excellent photo scanner with friendly software.

Excellent photo scanner - this is one of the best photo scanners I have used. This scanner is truly amazing - it effortlessly scans large stacks of photos at lightning-fast speeds while still maintaining incredible image quality. I was initially worried about the scanner damaging my precious photos, but it handled them with care and delicacy, leaving them in the same pristine condition as when I first received them. The interface is also incredibly user-friendly and intuitive, making scanning a breeze. I also love the workflow, as it automatically uploads the photos to Google Drive or Dropbox. Overall, I highly recommend this photo scanner to anyone looking to preserve their memories in a digital format.
