Q: Can the filter be turn off if I am using the faucet for other than drinking water? Will it still use the filter? Shorten the 6 month life span on the filter?

A: It always filters the cold water. You could install a bypass.

Q: Can a designated counter mounted faucet be used with this filter?

A: Yes, a designated counter mount faucet just for drinking or cooking would be great. This will extend the life of the filter and save you money replacing the filter. This is a great idea because most likely you don't need filtered water for washing dishes. Depending on the faucet tubing, you may need to get a different connector. The push/quick-connect fitting are the easiest for plastic tubing.
