The Motorola MB8600 Ultra-fast DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem supports true Gigabit speed with a 1 GB Ethernet port. Approved for Comcast Xfinity, Cox, and Charter Spectrum services, only. This cable modem is backward compatible with 32x8 DOCSIS 3.0.
Q: Can this modem replace the modem we rent thru Comcast/xfinty
A: I don't have phone or TV service from Comcast, just their 1 gig internet and this is the modem I purchased and use to avoid renting their modem.
A: Unfortunately, no, you cannot. This modem only allows for 1 ethernet connection. The additional ports are for connecting a port bonding router, so that you may exceed speeds of 1 Gbps, and ISP's haven't offered this service as of yet to consumers. It's still a good thing, as when technology allows, your modem will already be setup for it. To connect your devices, your only option is to connect a router to the 1 ethernet port on this modem, use the router's additional ethernet ports, or connect a wireless router to the 1 ethernet port and then connect your devices to your wireless router's network.
Q: Do I need any additional equipment to connect wirelessly to this router?
A: Yes. This isn't wireless
A: Your always going to loose some speed even hardwired. I like Linksys Velop. Easy to set up. Before had Tri band but now have MX10 as I have around 30 devices in my house. From multi tv streaming to Alexa video chats, echo, smart plugs , various grand kids visiting with smart phones and various tablets. What sold at first on Linksys. 2yrs ago had apple routers and extenders. For years best. They stop making routers and recommend Linksys. So the choice came down to Linksys Velop, netgear orbi, or Ero. Cause Linksys has a 3 yr warranty and 3 yr 24/7 support. I choose Linksys. After 19 months started having Ethernet drops in home. Called Best Buy since I purchased warranty. Did a few adjustments to modem and work great for a week. Then problem came back. So rep suggested since modem and router under warranty replace all. So I did and got Linksys MX10 WIFI 6 with mb8600 over my previous netgear modem. Mx 10 covers my two story house of 2100 ft. Both nodes downstairs and covers upstairs great and detach garage. 50 away in back yard still great coverage. 1g plan and WIFI 50ft away from house in back yard still get 250 speed WIFI. So further coverage than Tri band Velop. Place each node has 4 Ethernet ports. Note on MX10 - if you Ethernet the two nodes MX5’s. When parent to child - you can go from Ethernet port to main port on child. That leaves 4 Ethernet ports open. Instructions state that and callling support - suggest that to. Most others units you would go Ethernet to Ethernet ports. But I like the Ethernet to main port better. I Ethernet my two main tv’s. I am not a techie person so like easy of usuage from Linksys and 24/7 support. Full 3 yrs. suggest purchase Greek squad warranty as that works great. 19 months later return no questions and full refund on product. Got WIFI 6 for only price of warranty extra.
Q: Does this modem serve as a wireless router as well or do I need to buy a separate wireless router?
A: You need a separate wireless router.
Q: Will my apple router and the the 2 airpots express relays I have work with this?
A: Yes. The Ethernet output of the MB8600 is just going to the Airport Extreme. If your using Comcast your likely IPv6 now, so the AirPort Extreme needs to support that. Then you can have the Airport Express 's connected as "Add to an existing network" mode.
A: NOT the Netgear. It’s only on their “minimally qualified” list, which means ZERO support from them if something isn’t working correctly, and odds are it won’t be glitch free. This Motorola is fully approved up to their “Ultra 400” package, meaning it’s certified and fully approved with every speed up to that point. I use Spectum and the Motorola runs great.
Q: Is this modem compatible with x6 or x8 nighthawk routers?
A: Yes. It should have no problems.
