A: No, you don't have to use iFit to use the machine. You can just row on your own...or we have been watching YouTube on the tablet to follow rowing instructors there. It's just a normal tablet, you can use for surfing web etc. When you do connect the iFit app to the rower though it controls the tension settings for you which is pretty nice.
A: I strongly suspect that the model number RW850 is incorrect. I can only find this model for sale in the UK and AUS. It does not appear on NordicTrack's US website, but is on their UK website. https://www.nordictrack.co.uk/rowing-machines/nordictrack-rw850-rower

The NordicTrack RW500 Rower has a 5” Backlit Display to keep track of your workout stats with readouts that include watts, strokes per minute, total strokes, time, calories, distance, and 500 m split. A: Good luck getting NT to fix it. If you want to DIY you’ll need a 22mm crank puller and a 9/16 washer. Pull off the wheel, carefully move the tension arm, remove the Allen bolts holding the magnet arm in, put the washer on the axle of the magnet arm and then test to see if it now has enough clearance to not rub the wheel.
