A: Drill a small hole. Insert ridged wire, like from a wire hanger to check depth. Then bend the wire to half the size of the speaker, reinsert into the wall and rotate the wire to check that it doesn't hit any obstructions. This method should help ensure you install it between two studs. You must have about an inch of drywall all round the opening to affix to.
Q: Can these be ceiling mounted ?
A: Yes, I did - pretty easy and secure. I built boxes around mine in the attic for (slightly) better sound and to keep the insulation away from them.
